On the maintenance thing. I've had my M3P for 6 years now. I noticed that repairs are infrequent but expensive when they do happen. For example the rear rubber bushings on my car are going bad. They are built directly into the rear motor and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire fully functional motor. The result is a $9k repair for something that should be at most around $1k. Simply, bad engineering. This means that when the repair is needed I will most likely part the car out and get a new one.

Dang, that sucks! Was it covered on warranty? Elon clearly designs this car to be cheap to make, but disposable. For example, the “structural battery pack” seems like a really bad idea for maintenance. Just scrap it if a cell goes bad. How wasteful is that?

The event was terrible, taxi and van were impractical designs and were only autonomous in a lot that they had controlled for weeks. this was all smoke and mirrors. The issue isn't that the tesla team hasn't done great work, its that this event did a lousy job of showcasing it and there was very little in terms of details, and dates were really far out even for Elon
@MorganaThot

@@stevewilson6193 On one hand I agree with you, on the other hand they showed the cybercab model, they showed that they already have 20 of them, is that than still a prototype or can they already do some low volume production of it? they also showed the optimus robots again, not doing much but it is another showing. They generated an event with a lot of attention, looking really cool, displaying this 'tesla is the future' vibes, getting people to imagine what it would be like when all these products are live. I'm not quite sure but I also thought the robotaxi cab rides will stay available in that lot from now on, not just on the day itself, as the start of robotaxi, first place to pilot start the roll out.

My wife’s car got the update where we can be hands free while in FSD. THAT finally makes it worth buying. Granted I still think $8k is too high. We got it 5 years ago when it was $6k but I think they’d sell like hot cakes if it were more like $4k. While we’ve been thinking of getting back to the BMWs we love as they begin making nice EVs in the next couple years … but FSD is FINALLY now compelling and could keep us brand loyal.

Thanks for covering EV range. I live in a remote area, and many youtube sites and EV pundits keep saying we don't need more range in EVs, but that is completely wrong for many of us who live away from large cities. I definitely need the extra range in the winter mountain driving, and most of my friends I've tried to convince to get an EV, the argument comes down to range issues with EVs. I get not all users need the higher range, but I think like ICE vehicles, the EV industry should have 400 or greater range options available. I'm willing to pay a little more for say a vehicle like the model Y for 20-30% more range without having to go for a $100k+ vehicle, which I can't afford.

@chrisalbertson5838 Ай бұрын
To all those who are worried about range: Do you really drive more than 300 miles, one why every day? That's nuts. As long as you "only" have a 300 mile commute to work you do not need to stop and charge the car. So your day is easy. Get up a 4:00am and drive 300 miles to work and plug the car in. Work for 8 hours and then drive home, arriving home at 10:00pm. sleep six hours and do it again. If it were me, I'd find a job closer to home. But even your 300 mile one-way commute is possible. if there is electric power near your workplace.

Manufacturing engineer here, composite body is an odd choice. Composite layup is traditionally very slow. We are taking 4 hours with oven cure or 8 hours without oven cure. Stamping steel panels on the other hand takes just seconds. I’m very curious how they plan to make the body fast and cheap.

@@MrStrife622 looked up that process which is new to me, and that looks like the way they would do it. It’s not used in aircraft which is my specialty, probably because it’s not as strong, but suitable for car body panels. Would just need a post trim operation to clean the edges after press.
@georgepal9154
@georgepal9154 Ай бұрын
4 to 8 hours cure time is a lot for a single vehicle, but its nothing for a production line. Your parts would be ready in time to form the part multiplied by the number of parts, plus eight hours. A million parts, six seconds each (for example), is 1667 hours plus 8 hours of cure time. So 1675 hours. It may not work out that ideally, but at massive scale, cure time barely matters as long as they have the capacity to house and move those parts while they cure.
@MrStrife622
@MrStrife622 Ай бұрын
@@mylesgray3470 I don't know much about airplanes, but the BINC Aptera is using is made by CPC who makes F1 bodies. There is a trimming process but they recycle those bits back in, up to 8 times. One of the co founders made boat bodies with composites, and originally Aptera was going down that path until they realized it wasn't realistic for high volume production. And pivoted to the CF SMC.

I believe they will add a charge port once released mainly for redundancy, absolutely no reason not to, considering they will be fleet managed by individuals, not exclusively Tesla owned. This would also unlock reliable cross country travel, as riders that go for longer routes could “opt in” to plug in at super chargers when needed.

I personally doubt it, being they are trying to make this car ultra cheap and Elons favorite saying, no part is the best part. He doesn’t like redundancy as he is an extreme engineering minimalist. They will have to wait for FSD technology. Making the car is "easy," but FSD is not nearly ready and might not be for years to come. With no steering wheel, the tech has to be 100% flawless. FSD is not 100% under Musk's control. Smart engineers have to solve some problems, and they need smart ideas, you can not predict how long it will take to solve unsolved problems. It is not like digging a swimming pool where you can measure progress. My boss once told me "You engineers only work about 2 minutes a week, when you have a good idea worth justifying your pay, the rest of the time, you do monkey work that anyone could do." That was actually a huge compliment as I think it was more like 2 minutes every few months. So FSD will have to wait for perhaps a thousand of those two-minute periods to occur

The savings that FSD will create across a broad spectrum of transportation and environmental costs will vastly exceed the price of the vehicles. It's not if this will happen but only when. If you just consider municipal traffic law enforcement, it will be accomplished by FSD and made redundant saving $billions each year.

I’ve had full self driving in my car for about a year. I use it a lot. It does help, but I can’t see this getting to a fully autonomous status in two years. It makes mistakes on every trip some of which I can correct easily some of which I require disabling the auto pilot. it is frequently in the wrong lane at intersections you can use the turn signals to try and get it in the right lane. Sometimes it pays attention and sometimes it doesn’t. Not surprising they can do this based on vision that’s entirely how we drive a car but we also know something about human behavior and I don’t think this does so it’s not very good at predicting what other people are gonna do around it. If they ever get to the point where these cars can talk to each other, I can see it happening.

In the comments for the Yahoo Finance article about the stock crash after the show some random Tesla hater was claiming there was a Tesla person across the street controlling the cabs. There is no reason for remote control at the event. NOTHING was demoed that the current Tesla software can not handle well. There were no fire trucks or drunk drivers. The demo was designed to be easy even for the current FSD technology.

I am seriously wondering if these cars will stay to offer tours of WB to the public after the event. That would be interesting as a way Tesla can continue to rack up some more autonomous miles to convince state regulators. And gain some more insight into the durability and real world problems of day to day operations and test out how well the design really hold up to real weather, and the daily grind of life on the road. The Bus could be used along with a few more and the individuals can be used by couples, the model Y’s by the proverbial family of four, with some having car seats installed. Then there’s the matter of a single parent plus one chid, which can be anywhere from an infant up to a teenager, and meeting the law for car safety seats, with fast lock-in within seconds, carry able by the adult infant car seats or booster seats to make seatbelts effective. Tesla may need to manufacture their own car seats or have cars that one seat can rotate 180 degrees with the normal adult seat and one the opposite side have a child seat. You choose the configuration in the app!

What I like, as mentioned by FutureAZA they have done their Tesla thing and deleted anything not actually needed. Obvious is no steering wheel or pedals. Not so obvious, no seat adjustment, no switches on the inside of the doors, hood slightly overlaps front so alignment does not have to be perfect same as trunk lid, no internal mirror, no external mirrors no need for switches or controls or the cost of fitting, no glass roof, no rear window, darkened glass is not glass, no paint (the taxis were wrapped) possibly some panels were plastic or composite. For city use the battery is expected to be CATL LFP batteries made in US by Tesla under licence and expected to be half the size of a model 3. LFP can charge to 100% and work in cold climates. I´m not convinced on only using induction charging, I would like the option of plug in. You don´t need a big heavy battery for taxi city driving. One of their plans for Texas is to do taxi rides between Austin and Dallas, 295 miles in 3 hours or less.

A point-to-point route would work well. The important question is the price. The current price of a bus ticket is $22. And the bus has a bathroom in the back for your 3-hour ride. They would have to compete with the bus. The current low bus price is 7 cents per mile. Elon did say they would do 5 cents per mile with the taxi. But I think you need that extra 2 cents to make a profit. Who wants to run a taxi service at breakeven pricing.

And I like horses and sailboats. I suspect there will always be people who like antique technology and older people who like nostalgia. I suspect that you will be able to drive your car on public roads for maybe 50 more years before they bad manual driving for safety reasons. But even then, there will be tracks and parks where you can drive old model-T Fords and mid 1900's sports cars and even an ox cart if you like. But really in 50 years, most people would be terrified at the idea that someone on the road was manually driving a car and could kill them by making a tiny mistake. Today, manual drivers kill over 1,000,000 people worldwide every year. It is astonishing that we accept this as "normal". As said, don't worry, I still see people on horseback not far from my home here in California.

No. Because there were people walking and riding bikes in the street and the cars passed each other. Also, the pickup and drop-off spots were different for every trip. It works because the current fielded FSD they have today can do this kind of easy driving. They did not have to "fake" it because the demo course was within the capability of the current FSD ability. Any Model 3 could do this demo if FSD where enabled. OK, what they did have to do is disable the "driver attention" feature. A normal Model 3 would stop and refuse to drive unless it saw the driver looking attentive. The course lacks things that are "hard" like a firetruck with siens on or traffic cones and notice the lack of 4-way stops, only 2-way. And they limited the speed to "why slow". It was a real demo, just not one that is challenging to the current FSD software.

Listen to Elon's plan, FIRST they will release the software to current owners of Model 3 and Model Y, then a year later they release the RoboTaxi. This allows Tesla to gather data and prove that "zero driver intervention" was needed. It is a smart plan if they can make it work. He is letting real people do testing first in a vehicle with a steering wheel. And only AFTER it is shown to work does he sell cars with no steering wheel. Not only that but the people doing his testing pay him $8000 for the software just before it is released for free in the taxi.
