Introducing the all-new Toyota GR Corolla!
It’s the second Toyota to be given the GR treatment (following in the footsteps of the GR Yaris) and it could be one of the most impressive, important hot hatches to be released this year! So let’s take a closer look…
Let’s be clear from the start - the GR Corolla looks great! Just like the Yaris it’s got a massive square grille upfront and some additional intakes at each side. The meaty body kit comes with even bigger flared wheel arches than what you find on the Yaris, and it comes with a massive wing, too!
In terms of power, the GR Corolla more than packs a punch. It comes with the same 1.6-litre turbocharged 3 cylinder you get in the GR Yaris, but the output has been increased even further, putting down 300hp & 370Nm!! That’s 116hp more powerful than the next-most-powerful Corolla.
All sounds pretty impressive, right? The question is, will it be worth the price? Toyota hasn’t revealed the cost yet, but we’re expecting it to cost around £40,000+… About the same as a Golf R!

Mazda dropped the MPS range at the wrong time. Which is a shame because the 3 is quiet sexy. An MPS version would have been nice. Toyota and Honda are now pushing crazy high performance machines again. Which is good.. Nissan and Mitsubishi have nothing to offer in this segment. And probably never will now at this stage. And Subaru have fallen off the face off the planet. I'm pro 🇯🇵 and always have been.. I hope the GR Corolla buts the Golf R back in its box.

Because hot hatch doesn't sell all that well in the US?! There are groups of enthusiasts there for sure, but I don't think that there's enough of them to justify the hassle for the company to bring the GR Yaris to the US. It's the same reason why Audi previously didn't sell the RS6 & RS4 there. Mind you that the GR Yaris is a limited edition car sold with a relatively cheap price with the sole purpose to make them eligible to enter the WRC. It's basically a money losing project for Toyota. Bringing them to the US would only add the losses. Brits and Europeans are very much in love with fast estate and hatchback cars. That's why I find that it's more bizarre for Toyota not to sell the GR Corolla in the UK *AND* Europe, than their decision to not sell the GR Yaris in the US.

Toyota has mastered car manufacturing, the mechanically superior, durable and then adding beautiful body. You got yourself a classic. I live in SA and you still see 6th generation and 8th-11th generation Toyota Corolla’s in traffic. It is just a testament how great Toyota’s are. Their prices recently have skyrocketed but that could due to the nature of the current car environment or the facelifts the new generation but I would still opt for a Toyota than a German or European car for daily driving.

Also, it's not like you can actually buy a GR Yaris any more, especially in the UK. They stopped taking orders on them seven months ago, and they will never come back online, because the Corolla is going to very likely use the GR Yaris production line space once the final cars are built.

If we can’t have the GR Yaris, then you can’t have the GR Corolla lol But all jokes aside, it is probably because of economics. From what I understand, it will be available in North America, Australia, and Japan, but I can only speak on why Toyota went with the US as opposed to European countries. The volume of car sales in the US is way higher than in most of Europe because public transport isn’t all that accessible for most of the country. Unless you live in a major city, there’s a good chance that the public transit system will be either shit or just nonexistent. Most adults is the US need a car they can drive pretty much every day to get to work or really just go anywhere. Work commutes that are an hour+ long aren’t uncommon, so comfortable, reliable, and relatively inexpensive cars like Toyotas sell like crazy here. Make them fun and fast and it just ups the appeal even more. Bigger market = more money

The gr86 is probably not gonna see any significant power upgrades from here on out. They only opted to give it another 28 hp. I don’t ever see the gr86 go over 240 hp, since if you want something with more power, Toyota has the supra 2.0, and supra 3.0 if even that’s not enough. Keeping the power down also helps this continue to be an affordable sports car, it would lose its purpose if it was given more power and costs rise. The civic type r has suffered from this, and those who are interested in getting it cannot afford it, and those who can are usually too old to care.

I LOVE it! Now the sting of not having the GR Yaris here in the States does not hurt as much. During the eve of the all-electric future when some car manufacturers have ditched the manual and other manufactures have pull out of the high-performance hot hatch segment all together, Toyota gives us this beauty. WOW! I am all in with that Circuit Edition with its hood vents and carbon fiber roof. Well done, Toyota, well done. This car is going to sell like hot cakes, and this is the kind of car that will make JDM guys out of muscle car guys and super car guys. Sorry Europe but again you did get the GR Yaris. Either way, this is just a big win for car enthusiasts everywhere. If you sit back and just look at how Toyota has been serving the car enthusiasts community while also being a leader in car manufacturing and car selling around the world while at the same time being known for incredible value, reliability and quality, it is really an amazing thing. That also deserves a WOW!

Shame about the noddy stuck on LCD screen though. In the early years of automotive digi-tech, manufacturers DID stick screens on to front facias as if were a bit of an afterthought to the internal architecture. But you'd think after a decade of car evolution, more manufacturers would have have found a better way to integrate the screens into the facias - like Audi and VW do, and Alfa Romeo does on the Stelvio and Giulia. Apart from the old looking facia, the car is a stunning addition. And well done Toyota for investing in the ICE. Next stop - liquid green hydrogen fuel for these great cars. Just like in their hydrogen powered Racing Corolla which completed a 24 hour race at Fuji Raceway last year. Now THAT would be a far better alternative to these ridiculously expensive battery powered cars.
