I'm a JD guy, but always liked the 56 series. Guess I have a hankering for the 60's and 70's style tractors, since that's mostly what I grew up with. I've drove all the colors.

I own 1466 and an 856, for me they have been the most reliable trouble free tractors I own out of the 10 that I have, some of which are newer and way bigger. Any one of those you showed would be an excellent addition to your fleet you should definately seek out a 1066 or 1086 or both.

I have an 856 D that I kept when I retired from farming. It has 9,937 hours on the tach. Neither the head nor the pan have even been off. Good solid tractor. I had a 1086 that almost 9,000 hours on it when I sold it. I purchased it used. The pump had been turned up - easy to spot, the paint was burned off the left side where the muffler is. I had the engine rebuilt, the pump turned down to factory. It was a beast. Only negative I had on it was the shifting.

My opinion couldn't give me the 460 we had one junk. 1586 always wondered why IH screwed up putting a 3 speed in them great tractor always needed another gear..Any 856 or 1066 can't go wrong

I would personally pass over the 460 seeing what you already have. Its not an upgrade in power over a good strong M. The 856 is an absolute horse, I pull 5-16s with mine and its pretty much pick whatever gear and go. My vote lays with an 856. I paid 9000 for mine in IL, and its on the rough side in terms of paint but everything works and it runs like a stuck pig

Geno. The 460 diesel is a rare bird. Did you happen to see the hitch? It's hard to put a price on a tractor that you can't kick the tires on. The front end looks loose, no fenders, and it's hard to tell if the tires are dry rotted because they were driving around in the mud. Can't tell if the pump or the glow plugs work from a video because you can't start it. Is there any paperwork with it? Just because it's a rare tractor, I would say between 3500 to 4500.

Back in the 1970s our big plow tractor was an 806 gas open station wide front with a full rack of suitcase weights pulling a matching fast hitch five bottom plow. We farmed a couple hundred acres back then. Always dependable for us except for batteries, always batteries, no matter what tractor the batteries would be out when you wanted them, lol. Often it had a straight downspout exhaust pipe on it so it would roar when dragging that plow. It also got used for baling after the Oliver 880 went down for transmission gears. The 1066's with cabs were one of the more popular models in their day and thus should be easiest on your list to find parts -- I know some collectors chase the limited run models but I like the high production runners since I'm still working them. Unless pulling for show, I'd skip the turbos you showed as more things to break. Used car prices are collapsing ... likely won't be too long before the torrid tractor prices fall too, so it's best if you have patience.

The 460 has the T/A lever removed. The usually means it doesn't work and / or has been deleted. I have a 966 and I love it. It does everything I ask it to do easily, and is not hard on fuel. i did not see a T/A handle on a couple of the other tractors.

That is a very nice 460 Diesel. I bet it will go for $5000 or more. It would be perfect for the 311 plow. All the tractors were really nice. It is noteworthy, however that the 1256 and 1586 have a significant upgrade: The PTO. Both models original only had the 1000 RPM PTO, and these both had dual PTOs which came off of smaller tractors. I like both the 856 and 1256.

I have ran all but the 826 that you showed was about 4 years old when dad took delivery of a new 460 diesel did a lot of farming with it right out of high gave it a paint job traded it off never wanted to see it again overhauled after broken crank maybe would start without being pulled during the summer months chain took all the paint from front axle being that said I rebuilt a 460 gas still have like great my uncle who worked had 856,1206,1456, and 1466 I took to the field first day he got it. When I started farming I got a used 1066 think might been turned a little but believe wasn't that far behind the 14 great tractor 1466 were hard on rear ends my last tractor I bought a 5088 right when all the IH dealers going out of business as a demonstrator first owner little over 200 hr and warrenty 1983 auction 20500. Put 2500 hr. On it sold it on my farm sale got 19000. The rear end did go out but was under warrenty so new hytran on me and rest covered far I'm concerned that 414, 436 turbo engine really tough and a good starting engine there still quite a few these 966 1066 1466 out here in Midwest don't see as many 1256 don't think we're made to many years as I recalled bottom line that 1256 looked pretty good but I have a soft spot for 1066 just wear a good set of ear protection can't believe I hear as good as I do because I didn't wear protection any way sure it will be RED that's all that matters right we will be waiting for the outcome 😁

Ok first that 460 would be an excellent little power house for your farm. Get it out in the field with the disc or cultimulcher and let her Sing. As for the other tractors in my eyes it would depend on what you would be doing with it. Take the 1586 for example. It’s a big tractor that takes a lot of fuel and oil along with other maintenance. Also the gearing in them is a little funny in my opinion. I think an 856 or the 1066 would be a excellent tractor for you. Not to big or small. They will pull your existing equipment and they’ll give you a reason to expand. Also they would fit in your next shed because let’s face it you need another shed 🤣.

I heard it said a couple times around central MN that the two happiest days for a farmer who bought a 460. The day it was delivered to the farm and the day it left the farm. Hate to talk negative about any of the Farmall's or IH's but the 460 diesel wasn't one of the best ones built. I have a late model 62' 460 gas with the large axels, a 59' 560 gas and a 63' 560 diesel. The 460 and 560's are about the same physical size (running the same tires) and I am disappointed when I get on the 460 due to the lack of torque and power the 560 gas has. Just comparing the 460 gas to the 560 gas. They both start very well, no matter if its brutal cold or warm. The 460 is a good wagon puller. When the farmers in the area ran those older six cylinder IH's, it was pure music, gas or diesel. I love my 560's.

460 diesel is maybe for a reason lots of 560 dsl s in Indiana still being used hammering 282 seems to be the better engine most 460 are being converted to pullers buy you a 966 cheaper than a 856 1256 1066 or my favorite 66 series the 766 and 460 is a 3-4 k tractor condition condition condition

Good video. If I were you Id skip 460 and put money toward bigger machine. The m and h will do the work of the 460 and use less fuel. Did alot of mowing with 560 narrow front. Fun tractor to drive.

When I responded last week about contacting my cousin in Missouri about potential Tractors available for purchase, I had no idea he would pass away the end of that week. If you were to pick the best all around tractor from the 1940's-1960's to farm and hay with what would it be and why? Most efficient with just enough power to pull smaller implements 14' or so. Best gasser and best diesel. If you were gonna pick one tractor to do everything on a budget what would it be?

Figure out what type of farming you are going to do. Look up Rick Clark presentations on youtube for soybeans and Jon Stevens Maple Grove Farms youtube channel for corn (look for his 'white board talks' he shows conventional tillage vs strip/no-till hp and costs). If you are going conventional tillage you'll need to figure out how many plow bottoms and how much seat time you want in November. Regen Ag you only need to worry about pulling a no-till drill through standing rye at either 4, 8, 12, or 16 row unit size you want (again seat time) and enough hydraulic lines to run its functions. Our big plow tractor years ago was an 806 gas and worked out great for pulling a five bottom plow through heavy clay. Figure 15-20hp per plow bottom you want to do, 10hp per chisel shank if using those. These days I'm going all-in on Regen Ag with heirloom open pollinated seed so very little equipment is needed (I'm currently using a Ferguson 35 and Allis Chalmers WD). There's a youtuber running a round baler with a Farmall 350. You have the right idea looking at the old gear rather than new equipment payments.

i currently have a 2023 4820 branson and an iseki 2100u i would like an older tractor for just pulling disc and maybe a bailer what old tractor is new enough to be easy and comfortable to operate yet inexpensive enough to buy something i don't need?

My honest opinion on the last tractor video is that I wouldn’t go any higher than $1500.00 yeah may bring more than that at auction but I’m still not paying over $1500.00 for it because in all honesty you or I don’t know if it’s been torn apart and rebuilt or when the fluids were last changed you really can’t put a price on it unless you see it in person then that’s the only way I know if it’s worth purchasing it
