When the 87 was 11 months old I was at a shopping center after work and the car would start but quickly shut off. Turns out it was a faulty ignition switch. That was the only problem with the car in 10 years. They were fun and fuel efficient and the 87 was the last car I got a speeding ticket in, March '97! KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

I owned a 2012 GTI and loved it. I’ve had the 35th Anniversary edition for 3 months now and it has also been great. For $30K Canadian (with the VW rebate) this car is an absolute steal considering the performance and equipment. My last car was an A4, this one (manual) is much more fun to drive and faster. It is spacious, economical (I did 42mpg on a recent 400km drive), comfortable and entertaining. Yes, the interior is a bit cheaper looking than in the GTI but is the nicer interior worth 5 to 6 grand? And you cannot even get the digital cockpit in the GTI, it is awesome.

The GLI is an interesting and impressive vehicle. To understand how it fits into the entire VW lineup in North America it's worth noting a few points. First, VW has traditionally been challenged in terms of selling their European spec vehicles to North Americans, especially to US customers. Time and again VW found that Americans wanted cheaper, bigger vehicles than Europeans. That led to the demise of the first generation Tiguan , the European Passat, and the Touareg in North America. All still on sale in Europe and missing in the US and Canada. Now VW has announced that the only versions of the 2020 Golf to be sold in North America will be the iconic GTI and the Golf R. Instead, VW has opted to put most of their eggs in a basket that includes US versions of the Tiguan (known as the AllSpace in Europe and elsewhere), the Tennessee version of the Passat, the Chattanooga built Atlas and importantly the new generation Jetta lineup including the GLI. The MQB platform Jetta won't be available in Europe. By extending the Jetta lineup to a GLI version with the same engine and drive train as the GTI VW has an affordable compact sport sedan that will draw buyers who aren't enamored by the classic hatchback design of the GTI. From a sales standpoint it's difficult to fault. The Jetta is the best selling VW in America and the new model should continue that and hopefully reverse the drop in sales suffered in 2018. The GTI has such a loyal following and iconic image that I doubt the GLI will steal many sales. Instead, it should expand the customer base. As a GTI owner I have my fingers crossed. There is one exception to the bigger, cheaper VW strategy. The Arteon is still another attempt to interest Americans in a (mainly) Euro spec VW. It's noteworthy, though, that the VW CEO doesn't expect it to be a big seller in the US. Rather, it's a "halo" model meant to enhance the brand's image in North America. Allocations to US dealers (at least here in the Pacific Northwest) are limited. The dealers around Seattle have only one or two on the showroom floor and my dealer expects to receive no more than 4 additional units before the end of the calendar year. For those interested in a true European GT sedan, it's worth a serious look.

Or just record engine sounds on a thumb drive. You can play it in your living room as well as in your car.

Id rather just get an A3.. same engine way nicer in and out

I'd take the gli over the gti. I would get the dsg cause I dont know how to drive manuals. I'm not a car enthusiast just someone who likes weird or sleeper cars and I like to just put my foot down once in a while when no one is around. To be honest I've always thought golf models were ugly or plain. The gli is also kinda plain in some regards but has some nice touches to tell it apart but doesnt scream at you. Neither one is all that great looking to be honest but the golf to me looks extra standard. The design of it changes about as little as a bmw 3 or 5 series and to me that's not cool. The gti is a rounded box with some wheels. It literally looks like "prototype hatchback" that you would start with as a blank canvas. If I want a hatchback moving forward I'm a big fan of all the "sportback" designs that have been coming out I just typically can't afford them.

Don’t let the lack of knowing how to drive a stick hold you back, manuals are really easy to learn, and once you drive a manual long enough it becomes and automatic lol.

@@legostarwarsrulez Well I did make a new friend recently who has some late 90s manual mustang he says he will show me how sometime so maybe theres hope for me after all.

Dan R that’s awesome! Yeah if it’s not your thing don’t sweat it, but give it a shot, it’s cliche, but it really makes driving more enjoyable for a lot of people, which is why it’s usually the transmission of choice for car enthusiasts.

Does he drive like grandma going to Sunday meeting or have a lead foot? You list of repairs is largely how you treat your car. German cars are meant to be driven.

buy an accord 2 0t sport instead and have way more fun + options
@jonathanmartin15575 жыл бұрын
Siavash Erfanfar I would say the Accord is definitely a nice car, just aimed at a little audience than the GLI. The GLI has an independent rear suspension while the Accord has a torsion beam setup. The GLI offers a dual-clutch gearbox while the Accord offers a traditional automatic. The 2.0T in the GLI is running a EA888/IS20 turbo larger than the Accord’s with more room for tuning. But the Accord is nice if you want something possibly more reliable. Limited slip diff offering for the GLI as well.

From a modders perspective, nah. Stock for stock, maybe. The look on the jetta is more aggressive though. Good choice with either car honestly

You wouldn't have more fun. Only the Si comes close but its not nearly as refined.

My beef with VW is that they think sticking a leather wrapped steering wheel and Apple car play in your face will distract you from all the cost cutting. Their cars are really shitty compared to say a comparable Japanese variant. I want to like this car, but it’s just a cheap piece of shit.
@TalismanPHX5 жыл бұрын
Find it uninspiring. The flat gray paint does nothing for it. A GTI has a completely different image. The GLI screams middle manager to me, someone who wants a BMW, but can't afford one.

Sure make it look all overdone like the civic. Auto makers make different cars to different tastes. Don’t buy it. Problem solved.
