I believe I'd equip my own GLI the same way, I think the 35th Edition adds that extra uniqueness to the car. The Jetta would stand out where I live as there aren't many around which I like. Manual tranny all the way :)

I had an 84, 85 and 87 GTI 16V. All three GTI's were built in Westmoreland, PA The 84 was Cashmere White, 85 was Mars Red and 87 was Mica Blue. When the 87 was 11 months old I was at a shopping center after work and the car would start but quickly shut off. Turns out it was a faulty ignition switch. That was the only problem with the car in 10 years. They were fun and fuel efficient and the 87 was the last car I got a speeding ticket in, March '97! KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

In Mexico is a little bit diferent, there is no manual gearbox and the automatic one is a 6 speed DSG instead of the 7 speed DSG. I had a test drive, it looks better live than in pics or video, there is no rear AC vents. In the in the other hand it drives great, great acceleration, good handling and strong brakes. It does not drives like a GTI but is a great entry level sport sedan. A good deal.

@@RyGuyTheAVGuy I have a mk7.5 2018 autobahn GTI dsg, and my friend has a mk7 35th edition GLI dsg, which comes with the 8 inch infotainment, digital cockpit, wireless charging, vented heated and cooled seats and rear heated seats up here in Canada. So yes, if you have including yourself 3 people in the car, the gti has more cargo room for sure. But if you have a full car the gli does have more Cargo area to store. The way the seats fold down make the gti a mini mini van. Which is why it's popular among people who like to carry tools and such for work purposes, not the gti in particular but golf's in general as in the shape and how the seats fold. Edit: I didn't read your original comment I was replying to correctly. My above statement stands but yes I do own both as in I have a 2012 mk6 gli autobahn dsg and the 2018 autobahn gti.

Have owned both and currently have another GTI and prefer it over the GLI . Although it's great value for the money the materials and build quality are not as good. Seats in the GTI are far superior and the cabin is much nicer the the Jetta with a much more upscale feel. Nice to see that VW finally gave the Jetta the same power plant this time round though but I'll keep my GTI .

I owned a 2012 GTI and loved it. I’ve had the 35th Anniversary edition for 3 months now and it has also been great. For $30K Canadian (with the VW rebate) this car is an absolute steal considering the performance and equipment. My last car was an A4, this one (manual) is much more fun to drive and faster. It is spacious, economical (I did 42mpg on a recent 400km drive), comfortable and entertaining. Yes, the interior is a bit cheaper looking than in the GTI but is the nicer interior worth 5 to 6 grand? And you cannot even get the digital cockpit in the GTI, it is awesome.

Living in the US & seeing the Canadian version urkes. LEGIT, the Canadian version is exactly how i want mine configured to the Tee! The rims, 6 speed manual, the virtual cockpit, the sun roof, the 35th edition badging & the seats. Considering traveling to Canada to get one there and bring it back. lol. The one thing that would be phenomenal to see would be fog lights. What's going on with that? VW needs to to make some minor tweaks. Then it'll be adjacent to perfect.

I have had a GTI, then a TDI Sportwagen, now a GLI. All were/are manual transmissions. Of the bunch, I liked the TDI Sportwagen the best, but VW royally screwed that up with their emissions cheating. I'm really bummed that VW is dropping the Sportwagen from the NA market. I was hoping that they'd bring back a higher trim in a manual to the US market similar to the TDI but without the diesel. Oh well.....

The GLI is an interesting and impressive vehicle. To understand how it fits into the entire VW lineup in North America it's worth noting a few points. First, VW has traditionally been challenged in terms of selling their European spec vehicles to North Americans, especially to US customers. Time and again VW found that Americans wanted cheaper, bigger vehicles than Europeans. That led to the demise of the first generation Tiguan , the European Passat, and the Touareg in North America. All still on sale in Europe and missing in the US and Canada. Now VW has announced that the only versions of the 2020 Golf to be sold in North America will be the iconic GTI and the Golf R. Instead, VW has opted to put most of their eggs in a basket that includes US versions of the Tiguan (known as the AllSpace in Europe and elsewhere), the Tennessee version of the Passat, the Chattanooga built Atlas and importantly the new generation Jetta lineup including the GLI. The MQB platform Jetta won't be available in Europe. By extending the Jetta lineup to a GLI version with the same engine and drive train as the GTI VW has an affordable compact sport sedan that will draw buyers who aren't enamored by the classic hatchback design of the GTI. From a sales standpoint it's difficult to fault. The Jetta is the best selling VW in America and the new model should continue that and hopefully reverse the drop in sales suffered in 2018. The GTI has such a loyal following and iconic image that I doubt the GLI will steal many sales. Instead, it should expand the customer base. As a GTI owner I have my fingers crossed. There is one exception to the bigger, cheaper VW strategy. The Arteon is still another attempt to interest Americans in a (mainly) Euro spec VW. It's noteworthy, though, that the VW CEO doesn't expect it to be a big seller in the US. Rather, it's a "halo" model meant to enhance the brand's image in North America. Allocations to US dealers (at least here in the Pacific Northwest) are limited. The dealers around Seattle have only one or two on the showroom floor and my dealer expects to receive no more than 4 additional units before the end of the calendar year. For those interested in a true European GT sedan, it's worth a serious look.

I'm conflicted on the gli. Love the design, engine, option for manual and lots of standard equipment like heated/vented seats. I rented a Jetta last year and the interior was plastic everywhere. Zack, I've followed your reviews for years, and your my favourite Canadian car journalist...but, after seeing this Jetta at the Edmonton Car Show, I'm very surprised you didnt even mention how cheap the interior is...it reminded me of many (older) Ford products. You always point that out for those cars. I don't want to say you might be a bit biased on this (given I believe you own German cars??)...so tell us you just forgot to mention that detail :-) At $31k base for a VW is it a deal (especially compared to a GTI that appears to have a nicer interior), or was there too much cost cutting? I wasn't impressed.

I didn't notice any difference between the GLI in the GTI interior materials
@IntothewestOkotoks

@@Motormouth... Hmmm. I recall small details like the lining in the glove box and console...as well as a large amount of hard plastics. However, admittedly I didn't check out the Golf at the same time (if I recall, they only had the R at the show anyway). If theres no difference, then I'd guess the GTI is falling behind the times as well for interior materials - something that it was once the standard in.

I'd take the gli over the gti. I would get the dsg cause I dont know how to drive manuals. I'm not a car enthusiast just someone who likes weird or sleeper cars and I like to just put my foot down once in a while when no one is around. To be honest I've always thought golf models were ugly or plain. The gli is also kinda plain in some regards but has some nice touches to tell it apart but doesnt scream at you. Neither one is all that great looking to be honest but the golf to me looks extra standard. The design of it changes about as little as a bmw 3 or 5 series and to me that's not cool. The gti is a rounded box with some wheels. It literally looks like "prototype hatchback" that you would start with as a blank canvas. If I want a hatchback moving forward I'm a big fan of all the "sportback" designs that have been coming out I just typically can't afford them.

Dan R that’s awesome! Yeah if it’s not your thing don’t sweat it, but give it a shot, it’s cliche, but it really makes driving more enjoyable for a lot of people, which is why it’s usually the transmission of choice for car enthusiasts.

Siavash Erfanfar I would say the Accord is definitely a nice car, just aimed at a little audience than the GLI. The GLI has an independent rear suspension while the Accord has a torsion beam setup. The GLI offers a dual-clutch gearbox while the Accord offers a traditional automatic. The 2.0T in the GLI is running a EA888/IS20 turbo larger than the Accord’s with more room for tuning. But the Accord is nice if you want something possibly more reliable. Limited slip diff offering for the GLI as well.

My beef with VW is that they think sticking a leather wrapped steering wheel and Apple car play in your face will distract you from all the cost cutting. Their cars are really shitty compared to say a comparable Japanese variant. I want to like this car, but it’s just a cheap piece of shit.

Find it uninspiring. The flat gray paint does nothing for it. A GTI has a completely different image. The GLI screams middle manager to me, someone who wants a BMW, but can't afford one.
