What an amazing radio to have in my hands. The New Yaesu FTDX101D 100 watt HF/6M Direct sampling SDR radio. A beast of a radio. Made a couple contacts today with it, even a DX contact.

Great video. Starting at 8:42 when you TX, the right meter is in ALC. I noticed you were pegging the meter. ha ha

The FTDX101D is a great rig! After playing around with adjustments to the 2D spectrum display, I found the following settings worked well for me. Speed Fast3, Peak LV4, Colour-1 and Colour-13, RBW High, 2D Display Sensitivity HI. This is with a TFT Contrast set at10 and TFT Dimmer set at 7. Awesome fast white band spectrum display and great receiver as well! Not forgetting the scope Multi Level control either, which is great for waterfall fine adjustments for signal display depth.

With the 3D waterfall aside, this radio is mind blowing with its features. I am an Icom fanboy, but this rig really hits it home. Great job Yaesu. I'm not going to lie, I'm looking forward to Icom's response to this.

Icoms respond? why instead ask yaesu why they have not implement the "average" function as Icom has to decrease the rocket speed of signals peaks. Yaesu is way behind Icom panadapters.

Best review I’ve seen to date man. You have sold me the radio. I have got a FT101 and an FT101E. I recovered them both as good for parts or repair as advertised on eBay. It was so much fun getting them both working and guess what -- they now both run real good and are now getting me QSO’s / contacts world wide. The Yaesu FTDX 101MP is ordered and I recon I’ve earned the right to own one. What history will be in my shack .... this is just such a cool time for Yaesu owners. Thank you Yaesu and thank you for a great heads up video sir. Sincerely - your country cousin GI8WFA. 73.

I wish for Santa to design and bring me a radio like this that also covers 1.25m, 2m, 70cm, 1.2Ghz and offers plugins for other bands. Everything in a single box. Yes, I know all about putting all the apples in a single basket but for limited space, it would be a station maker in a compact form. Combined with Yaesu's nice Linear Amp, speaker module and other things like an external display this radio could put a Ham in Hamville Heaven. Anyone would literally be sitting in front of the worlds greatest designed Amateur Radio Station console. YASUE MAKE THIS RADIO! We would pay the price for all of that nice!

I went on a shopping trip while I was on holiday on the island of Penang. I found the radio supply shop near to the air field on the island. The radio had previously been on order before I got there. I was buying a Yaesu FTDX 101 for a Ham friend back down in Malaysia . All I had to do was introduce myself to the owner. Tell him that I had come for the rig that had been put on order for my friend. Check out the radio give the guy the cash and use the telephone to call a number that I had been given and wait for two army guys to come to the shop and ask for me. The army guys came in a Rover and took the radio away for me. It would be delivered to my friend back down in Malaysia by the AAC and flown by Beaver AC doing the mail run down to our camp airstrip where another member of our club worked. Military precision worked a treat to the last order. 73 de - John -G0WXU.

Alas, I have to continue to use my lowly, ancient IC-756 Pro3, since I am neck high in medical debt! My lowly Pro3 that has worked 50 states on 6 meters (and VUCC), DXCC, WAS, etc. running 'barefoot' with wires, loops, and small 2 element 'Junior' beams! That said, the FTDX-101D is a dream rig and then some!

Looks great. Waiting for the Sherwood tests. By the way, for some people here, Hf/6/4 mtr. and VHF/UHF in one radio, that's why they build mobile rigs. If one has a base radio, with all those bands and the filtering/SDR , I think would cost a small fortune.

Looks like a great radio. Yaesu have thought this out and done well to make sure it earns the '101' model number in homage to the original FT101. The display looks great and the interface looks easy to use. A good balance between menu items which are easy to access and not too many buttons on the front panel. I have been an electronic technician and computer programmer for about 34 yrs. As per SDR and its definition: "Software-Defined Radio (SDR) is a new technology that offers a simple alternative to bulkier analog radio, adding more flexibility, performance and a smaller form factor. SDRs are everywhere nowadays, from your cell phone to your wireless headset and your cable modem." I believe latest radios are great, but do not offer the best for their price, or pricing is too high, or better said, overpriced radios. SDR, as its definition, and by using Air Spy and SDRSharp, you can really design a software, but dragging and dropping what components you want on your application, such as a water fall etc. In a short summary, and in my own opinion, such flexibility is not on any new radio, as SDR it is used to trick possible customers but on a non open source product. Therefore, such great filtering, etc, it is something that should be there to begin with, but then used SDR as the greatest and latest, with nothing new but a touch screen or any other interface. These new radios should be flexible enough so advanced users can get the benefits of what really SDR is. You are great at what you do, and I do state and mean that, but my opinion is against the manufacturers to against you. An example of this, look what Yaesu do on a 4k $ radio , and what Xiegu G90 does on a $449.00 radio. Still both non open source, but excellent features, one cheaper than the other. Another example is the uBITX or MBITX, the extra AGC circuit designed by a ham radio operator and also the Antenna Analyzer done by another ham. Flexibility, programming, and enhancing and cost effective solutions. A nice cabinet, and done. Keep up the great reviews you do. Thanks.

I couldn't help but notice the ALC pinned in the corner while you were talking. This is why there are nasty signals up and down the bands! The ALC is there for a reason. Why don't hams pay attention to this and properly set their audio? Hitting the ALC this hard makes you 6 khz wide with buckshot and splatter and it sounds like crap.

Nice overview of the radio! It is doubtbul the USA will ever get the 70Mhz band. The feds allocated it for the Positive Train Control separation system (PTC) which is to prevent rail accidents. That project is close to 8 years old, is federally mandated to be implemented, and is just now rolling out live on all the major railroads.

Nice Rig with great numbers on Rob Sherwood's RTD (#1 rig now). I waited for over a year to buy one of these rigs, and I finally got to see one at the Orlando Hamvention. Only problem was that the Yaesu representative would not answer any detailed questions about the rig, and the rig on display was essentially disabled. That guy aggravated me so much I wound up buying a Flex 6400M instead. I'm very happy with my decision now that I see the FTdx101D price and everything I wanted or needed is an option with the Yaesu, but standard on the Flex. Flex remotability is far superior to anything on the market, and the panadapter display has the highest resolution of any rig on the market. The RTD numbers aren't bad either. Yaesu hit it out of the park on performance numbers, but I don't want to have to buy the stadium and pay for parking too. Pete K1OYQ

Yaesu has always had the best Noise reduction out of the big three, flex may be as good. So yes easy to use and the receiver is quiet already without it engaged, having the feature is a plus. I compared the 101d with the 7300,7610,ts890, and the frdx5000, its DNR and NB is light years ahead of the 5000, and by far better than the others

When I was a kid my dad used to be big fan of cb radios. He had lots of them, which we were using as like a mobile phone nowadays, but he also had station at home with president jackson, which was hooked up to antena that was visible from few kilometers (thunderstorm magnet). If I remember correctly he was exchanging qsl cards using this radio. At this time I was like 6-7 maybe and I couldnt wrap my head arround how did he get cards from all over the europe, while we could only communicate up to 10-20 kilometers using cb. He had a big cabinet full of cards. Over time he lost interest in this hobby and Im not big radio guy either, but whenever I see tool like this it brings some sentiment. Maybe its super noob question, but as a hobbyist what sort of use you make out of device like this? It looks like you could control air traffic with it. :D It looks very powerful and brings back some memories, hence my nostalgic comment :) I hope Im not going wind anyone up with questions like this :D

Great video Eric, I appreciate all your reviews. Having said that ,while the 101 looks nice it's not for me. In my 44 years as a ham I've owned many nice Hf rigs. I'm not an SDR fan, and I prefer a radio with power supply, I don't want to have to get a power supply for it after spending $4000 on it. It's still a 100 watt radio, and my recent radios are 200 watts, if I need more I turn the amp on but normally not needed unless I'm rag chewing on 80 meters at night. And speaking of the 101 radios I did buy one brand new in 1976 ,a 101EE...that too was an awesome radio and I still use it now and then... Thanks again, I look forward to your next review, and thanks to GigaParts for making this available for demo..73

Like you , I'm not sure I see the value of the 3D scope. I prefer the 2D waterfall and glad to see how easy it was to switch to it. Likewise, much easier to change colors that Icom where it's buried moreso in the menus and adjusted by numeric values +\-. And love the fluid looking "analog" meters.

The 3d scooe shows whether there was a signal there in the past, meaning if you walk away and then come back and look at a standard 2 d scope the waterfall may not show that a signal was observed, but with the 3d scope it will show the spectrum and a history of signals perpetually so you wont miss signals that you may have missed if you weren't paying attention to that part of the spectrum when it was transmitted, this would help especially in a contest environment

sweet rig!! hope to be able to get one of those when I grow up,........ or when my wife lets me spend the money. From what I been told is the USB's are for a Mouse if you want and then you can add a PC monitor to it and control it with the mouse. that's what was explained to me.

This is a very good video that effectively introduced us to this radio , a couple of comments though . Many of the features earned almost "wow" type comments from Eric , however I think the pleasant reaction should be put in context with other radios. My features that impressed Eric are also present on radios like the Icom 7610 , 7300, and Flex radios. Also, I would like to know if this radio can provide IQ output for use with CW Skimmer? I'm not sure if the IF output jacks mentioned in this video provide this capability or not. I suspect not. The Icom 7300 shocked me by NOT having the ability to do IQ output and the Icom 7610 was launched without IQ output but added a year later via firmware update. Given the popularity of CW Skimmer for contesting and DXing, a radio's support for IQ output is vital information. Also wondering about the remote operations of this radio, do you need special l software at extra expense (like with Icom 7300, Icom 7610 )?

Great video! I'd love to see YAESU FTDX101D VS ICOM 7610 should you have the opportunity.

The IC-7610 is a more 'rounded' rig with better rear panel connectivity; the Yaesu has a better 'feel' to it / build quality but seems exclusively aimed at a Ragchewer or DXer. 73, Jarrad VK3BL :)

Well rounded is an opinion, mine is the 101d has better build quality better receiver, especially in high noise and qrm environments. It also is easier to operate with a knob for everything. Easy menu to navigate. The 7610 doesnt hold a candle to the 101d, I have used both and I went with the yaesu

Thank you for a nice video and thanks to the company to sponsor lending you the radio. I must say really, this is my personal opinion based and several factors. I always been a yeasu fan and I never really liked Icom. Dont like their look.and I never liked their hissy sound. I own a FTdx-5000D+, FT-920, 847.and 650. But I compared.this ftdx-101d with IC-7610. I love the 7610 in comparison. It looks like cnc machined out of high grade aluminium which has been SOX anodized black. Not a hint of imperfections. The 101d however does not make you feel it's a high quality feel. IMHO. 73

PS. The new FT101D is one beautiful piece of radio. I do like the way you showed the various ways that the waterfall/scope settings can be viewed. Yaesu have rely gone wild with this new radio. I still am a bit unsure about the 3D waterfall. It could send you dizzy watching that all along. Let's put it like I would not say no to one if it was coming my way. 73 de John - G0WXU.

You missed the DSP capabilities ,to me this rig is the best in the market, you missed the amazing VC tuning function combined with the noise reducing and DSP filtering .it is a super good video about this advanced rig.

Great video. I have owned many yaesu equipment over the years until I bought Ft2000 after that Icom ic7600 and seriously and never thought about Yaesu anymore. No doubt Yaesu seems to have done a great job this time "but" I need to demonstrate reliability, which with ft5000 was a failure for the money invested. And also despite the fact that Sherwood numbers are unbeatable, you have to see it with real antenna and with very low signals. The display is very nice but I do not buy a radio to see a nice display I buy to do it in difficult conditions and it is at the receiver where I put the money and not on the display. HI if it is beautiful and listens very well without a doubt it is a winner. Many times laboratory if it indicates good things and then in reality it looks something different (it is my opinion). Only time will tell if it's worth it to return to Yaesu or wait for Icom's answer that I'm sure will be devastating. Great video Thank you for that. Great work of Yaesu

Nice video Eric. I can tell you from my experience between this rig and the 101D as well as the FTDX 3000 and the 7300, the Yaesu internal antenna tuner tends to be much more forgiving then the Icoms do. Not sure why as both are rated similar..
@AD4C
@AD4C Жыл бұрын
No, they are not rated similar. Why Icom tuners stop tunning when swr is over 3:1? is because Icom wants to protect its passive components (relay contacts and ceramic caps) when tunning antennas with high swr which could damage the tuner, so If yaesu will tune higher swr is because they used higher rated components instead but that means bigger size radio like this 101D. Its just a matter of protection to the builtin tuner.
