Spot on. The E200 (w/o kompressor) or even the E280 pre facelift (inline 6, NOT V6) and gearbox w/o tiptronic function. these are most reliable ones. Avoid the V6.
@ChrisWeevilGarage2 жыл бұрын
Cheers bud, thanks for the additional feedback!!😀👍🏾
@thomaslsy19922 жыл бұрын
I'd have to politely disagree with the statement of avoiding the V6 because they aren't as bad as they are made out to be. I have a '97 W210 E280 pre-facelift and the V6 engine is rather bulletproof. The '97 model year was the first year they introduced the M112 V6 engine, replacing the M104 inline 6 that was used in the '95 and '96 W210 E280 and the '89 - '94 W124 E280. While the M104 inline-6 engine has a reputation for being reliable, it's Achilles heel was the failing head gasket (that led to oil leaks around the rear of the block) and the wiring harness/loom which many W124 owners would say, disintegrated over the years (apparently the material used to make the wiring insulation was degradable). Mercedes rectified this matter with recalls and changing the insulation material. But by the time they discovered the failing harnesses, Mercedes made a bold move to replace the engine midway through production with the newly minted M112 V6 (normally unheard of today because most automakers would only change the engine when a new generation of car came out, not midway through production). I do however agree with avoiding the tiptronic gearboxes but not because they were unreliable but because the delay between shifts was agonizing. Best to leave it in automatic mode or go for the older gearbox. Now, with the '97 E280, the M112 engine was paired with a newly introduced 722.6 electronically controlled five speed gearbox (not the 722.4 that was used in the older W210's). While I do admit the gearbox needed a software update (the earlier software caused the gearbox to sometimes forget to shift), the combination of the V6 engine with that gearbox made the W210 a silky smooth cruiser with minimum repair requirements aside the usual wear and tear. The engine idles smoothly and has never broken down unnaturally (except the time I forgot to change the battery but that's on me). Other than that, there's really been no major cost incursions and it runs reliably to this date, 25 years since it was made. On the driving experience, with the V6 engine, there is never a moment I've driven the car without smiling. The torque builds up much lower in the rev range as opposed to the older I6 so it really wafts through traffic and is a joy to drive on the highway. Another fun fact that I love about the M112 V6 engine is dual spark plugs per cylinder (Alfa Twin Spark engine owners will understand this). Basically, combustion is more complete but it also means dual detonation per cylinder per cycle which means more performance and smoother boost (most evident on highway drives). It is still very powerful by modern standards and the sound the V6 engine makes always brings a chuckle. The trade off would be fuel consumption (car comes with an 80 liter fuel tank. Full tank RON97 means whole month no need to eat. Hahaha) and the road tax (2.8 in a sedan can be steep especially for an old car). But it's truly a one of a kind experience to own one and I would not trade it for anything. I've gone a bit long winded but thank you for taking the time to read this. My ownership experience may vary from what others may be experiencing due to numerous factors (experience of mechanic, accessibility to parts, condition of vehicle). Hence, please do not take offence if I disagree but I always believe that if you have the right maintenance method and people, no car is truly unreliable. Watching Chris' videos have certainly taught me that. Take care, stay healthy and God bless. Happy New Year. Cheers!

Happy new year Chris! Perfect video to start the new year! In complete agreement with you on the whole “lifetime fluids” thing. Lifetime as defined by us is not the same definition as what car manufacturers define it as. Put it simply, the bean counters have to find a way to make sure the customer revisits the sales floor every 4 or so odd years… Looking forward to more vids on this!
