As an old Veteran GRUNT, my heart cries for these MEN OF MEN who are treated WORST OF ALL and expected to perform BETTER THAN ALL while being kept hidden in the shadows as the pilots and generals etc bask in comfort and glory and medals... We KNOW NOT THE NAMES OF THE TRUE HEROES OF OUR MODERN TIMES :(

The ones that make it through BUDS would never let you know just how dangerous they are unless they want you to know it. Very level headed and calm. My cousin was a Navy Black Beret (brown water navy) in Vietnam. In the 70's the changed the MOS to Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen. Basically SEAL taxis. SWCC are trained in boating and weapons tactics, techniques, and procedures that focus on clandestine infiltration and exfiltration of SEALs and other special operations forces. My cousin never really talked about anything he did. My Uncle told me one story his son told him about picking up a SEAL team in the Mekong Delta where as they were under fire from two groups. One group was Vietnamese the other were caucasians most likely Soviet military. My cousin was a gunsmith for a while then went on to make teddy bears with his wife. Like I said you never know just how dangerous they are.

I joined the US Marine Corps in 1967 to avoid being drafted into the Army. I spent 12 weeks in Officer Candidate School (OCS) and then 6 months in the Officer Basic School to learn how to be an infantry platoon commander. I arrived in Vietnam in December 1968 and led a platoon in combat. I returned home in December 1969. I'm now 77 years old and I can tell you that the training back then was intense and it was mentally and physically exhausting. Not as intense as the Navy SEALs back then, but it was very demanding where you had to reach down to overcome what you thought wasn't possible. The SEAL prep instructor was right when he said it is 90% mental. You have to dig down and be determined to accomplish the mental and physical challenges. In OCS, the Drill Instructors gave us challenges they knew were impossible to accomplish just to see how we reacted to the impossible. Did we give up or continue trying to overcome the obstacles. Our physical and mental challenges were similar to Marines going through Boot Camp, but in OCS the Drill Instructors ultimate decision was if they would want to follow us in combat. If not, we were dropped from the program. My OCS platoon started with 50 candidates and we graduated about 20. I can also tell you that the training I received in 1967-1968 was very difficult but not as difficult as Marines go through today. I assume that it was the same for the SEALs in that their train in the 1960's was has difficult as it is today. After I retired from the Marine Corps, I became an independent consultant on military high technology programs--mostly for Special Operations. Not only did I consult on the development, but I was also tasked to train them on the new technologies and provide technical support on exercises around the world. I sometimes supported SEALs on these exercises, but I also supported Delta and SEAL Team 6. Some of the exercises lasted 4-6 weeks in remote areas in Germany, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, South East Asia, Korea, Hawaii, and across the US.. It was a wild ride for 15 years.

In commencement speech by Admiral McRaven, Seal Commander ... a favorite part how one Seal test is to scuba dive at night in the open Pacific with the sharks, deep under the middle keel of a warship.

That water stuff is the most impressive to me. I had (potential SEAL) friends in the Navy who I worked out a bit with while I was in, and they would do their water stuff..I mean this was Great Lakes cold as fk and windy around winter time type training and they're in tiny shorts. I wasn't completely in the know what SEALS were or that it was an option when I got in and while I was working out and exercising with them..possibly. I was just oblivious and didn't ask questions or see any of the..well there were only like 2 movies about SEALS when I got in the military, so I didn't know about it, but I'd like to have signed up and tried it out. I thought SEALS were just divers. I'm naturally great at pushing through the pain and running and ace-ing the pushups and all that, better than most people in the military who aren't in the special forces. I could keep up okay I think, but I'm certain the water would have ended me. That cold water training is something else and of course so is swimming around in an ocean at night. I knew guys who were very athletic, confident, and gungho and they still couldn't make it through BUDS (I felt that clearly they had a better shot at it than me). SEALS are special. I guess it's a bit like a Fighter pilot doing touch and goes on a darkened flight deck level special. I always envied the fk out of those guys. Anyway, if someone wants to be a SEAL, I'd imagine they should try waking up at 4 and taking a cold shower. That'll get them in the mindset. haha

Hi Courtney. I had the pleasure of spending time with a lot of these guys as a teen. My brother was a 30 year Navy man and spent a number of years in the Teams. First in UDT and then as a SEAL. His 2 tours of Viet Nam were with Seal Teal 2. I spent most of 4 summer vacations staying with my brother and his family from ages 13 to 16, and went to work with him most every day. Got to see and do some very cool stuff. Not so much the 7am PT every day lol. The heart and drive that these guys have is unmatched. I was wondering if maybe you could provide a link to the vids you show us (the originals). It's not always easy to find them with just a description. Would be appreciated. Thanks. Good content, and you as always a joy to see and listen to. Stay safe and well and adorable.

Court, These men are supermen. Their mental toughness is one of their strongest attributes. Plus they are in great shape. They will learn to perform as a team. And you take care of your buddy. Some of the best training in the American military. No wonder they complete their missions so well. One of the best stories I have ever heard on this training involved pool work. They were suppose to swim a certain distance. This student just took a big breath, jumped in the water and walked the distance. He completed the distance. His instructors asked him what the hell he was doing. The student said I don't know how to swim Chief. The instructors said that's OK. We will teach you how to swim. The student showed mental toughness and he completed the task. Amazing.......

Another part of the Navy you’ve probably never heard about is the SEABEES ( the Navy’s Engineering and Construction Force). You should check them out. I served as a Navy SEABEE for 5 years in Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4. We start by completing Navy boot camp and then go on to job training schools. There we learn job skills as well as basic combat skills. Once we complete our job training schools (A school) then we report to a Construction Battalion (CB) Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB) or 1 of 2 Underwater Construction Teams (UCT) and multiple other units.

The harder you train, the harder you fight, and the better your chances of surviving. Handling the stress and hardships makes the guys more resilient. I might have passed the course when I was 20 but that was 50 years ago. I wonder what a battalion of SEALS could do in combat? I just don't want to be the guy who would have to face them.

The original purpose of the seals was to do basic underwater demolition (hence the name). They would swim ashore undetected to conduct beach reconnaissance and blow up obstacles in preparation for a larger beach landing. Their mission evolved during Vietnam to include more of what we view Seals as today. But their primary mission is still to be subject matter experts in underwater demolition

If you want more about U.S. Navy SEAL training. Check out the lectures done by Jake Zweig. Jake Zweig was a U.S. Naval Officer and former U.S. Navy SEAL himself. Now my understanding from what I have scene of these lectures. If you are a Officer, and you want to become a U.S. Navy SEAL. You get one chance. If you quit, you are done. You go back to the fleet. You do not get a second chance at BUDS. Now if you are medicaled out. Then you are given the chance to recycle through BUDS.

All Special Operations people (SEAL, Ranger, Special Forces, MARSOC, etc.) are trained to an extremely high level and taken to the breaking point in the process. The training is different for each unit as well as the missions, but it is all very serious business.

If God forbid one of us is ever kidnapped by terrorists, don't you hope and dream men like this will come and rescue you? SEALS have an expected 17:1 ratio of kills to deaths, meaning they average 17 kills each. Higher numbers are common in actual missions.

ALL US Special Operations Forces (SOF) selection processes are impossible to 90-92% of human beings. This is alegit and verifiable statement as only 8-10% of any given class in any service branch, that started out at 100+/- graduate. Some failures are due to injury (hamstring, ACL, Achilles tear, ruptured discs, etc. Some injuries, once healed are considered minor enough that the applicant can reapply. BUT, now he knows the stresses his body will endure and prepares. We lose people in training sometimes. When it happens the media and activist groups go ape. But in reality in most cases the candidate/student pushed themselves too far and drowned, or made a move he didn't think through. See, here's the thing, these are adult young men. Mommy and/or daddy aren't deciding their lives anymore. Therefore, candidates are encouraged to practice/workout on their own, without supervision. Some make a mistake and go to far. Deaths happen OCCASIONALLY. But, in yhe UK Special Air Service (SAS) it has happened regularly enough that there is monument at their training base at Hereford with the names of the dead. Yet the SAS holds American SOF units in high regard and view them as equals. Just... different.
