I remember the crowd coming to their feet as the closing form was closing-in, then going absolutely crazy till we played our last note. I looked down the rest of the front ensemble and watched them pour the entire year's worth of emotion into the final notes. Being in the front ensemble while that hornline played their last chord was a privilege, even if my ears were ringing for the next hour. I'll never forget the way they shook my internal organs! I cried like a baby as the corps marched off and we loaded up. What a year to age out.

Looks like 36 guard which is about a standard size for DCI of this era. Some have 40 now. When the member limit was 128 - most guards were about 28 - 32 members. Horn lines have grown from an average of 64 to now roughly 80. Drumlines have stayed about the same size while the pit has grown a lot. This corps has 68 brass, 36 guard, 19 battery, 10 pit, 2 DM for 135 members (the limit in 2003).

I'm not sure if you can get it in Japan or if you're back in Australia but there's a show called clash of the corps. It fellows a couple of corps from rehearsal till championship. It's a reminder of my teenage years for me but an Insight into what it's like to March and what we do every day. And how we become family and how much we do love what we do. Even though sometime I'm to tried to stand up in the shower. We do it because we love it. And for troopers we do it for the HLD. If you want to know what that means. Show. Troopers 2011. . Troopers alumni have just rated their favorite show. And I can see why because of the infinity chord at the end of the show. Its difficult because it's at the end . Guard had an amazing run that night. I was there in the stands. The ladies get to have an amazing show like that because they had such a great soundtrack to perform to. They definitely feed on the energy of the music and the musicians feed on the energy of the guard. When everyone is on the same page and vibin together you get performances like that. It’s an amazing feeling and you feel so connected to your fellow corps members. To this day (I aged out 13 years ago) the people I performed with are like family to me. Regiment had a brand new line of B flat brass for 2003....finally switching over from G brass. They came out to Southern California that year when I was drum major for SoCal Dream Sr. Saw them at the Glendora show, and the sound on the opening hit was just glorious! When the DMs started gathering in one endzone prior to going out for retreat, I asked one of the guard members who was a Regiment alum (82-84) to accompany me to retreat and made a point of introducing her to the Regiment DMs, who seemed pleased to meet someone who'd marched their corps when they were in diapers! That was when we started the tradition we had for the 2 seasons I was DM where I'd have guard come out to retreat who had some sort of connection to either the venue or another competitor that night. Of course, since Regiment was out, I had a little fun during our performance. I normally did not use a baton, but one of our staff gave me one and did the slow pull from the back routine -- i remember hearing people reacting to it behind me -- then got some laughs as I stepped to the side and dropped it off the podium! Also, when it came time to step out for our salute at retreat, we did the kick halt. Again...some people got the joke!

If you want to know how Phantom won the title in 2008, in a way, it kind of starts with 2003. After several years in the competitive wilderness, this is the year Phantom got its mojo back. It was also the first year percussion deity Paul Rennick was on staff, and you could immediately hear his fingerprints all over the battery. They also switched to B-flat in 2003, and honestly, this is the show that made me a believer in the instrumentation change. It's not the cleanest drill in the world, but that closer still holds up.

I'm going to break my comments into 4 parts: 1) For Courtney....the number of Corps members had a maximum of 135 at this point in time. Now it is up to 150. Each Corp has the discretion on how they want to split the number of members between hornline, drumline, color guard, front ensemble (pit), and drum majors. 2) Phantom Regiment ... this show has always been a special one for me. I saw it live all three nights of finals week in Orlando. What I really enjoy about this show is that the music can stand on it's own without watching the visual. Not all shows can do that. I have a DCI playlist of favorite shows just because of the music and this is on it. You had to be in the audience to feel the impact of the opener when the Corps turns and just blasts you...goosebumps! 3) 2003 was a great year. Blue Devils were amazing with The Phenomenon of Cool (first time I saw it in June I knew it would be first or second) to win and Cavies had a great follow up with Spin Cycle to their 202 championship. Cadets in 3rd with Our Favorite Things. 4) Orlando in August....terrible choice for championships. The heat, humidity, thunderstorms. With schools back for football practice DCI could not find enough facilities for the all Corps to be housed or have practice facilities. It was my son's 2nd year marching with Seattle Cascades. They were housed in a cheap motel. Their practice area was the sloping parking lot of a Target store in East Orlando. They had to use traffic cones to block off parts of the lot to create their space. Absolutely horrible for finals week preparation. I think the top 12 Corps got better arrangements. Thanks Mark for giving Courtney this one....it's a great one.

Yeah, semis of Div II/III got rained out, and they used some bs method of the previous night's scores for some corps and the scores from that night (including the corps who got rained on throughout the show). We were slated to be in Div II finals but got pushed out due to their ridiculous method. I'm still salty about that one, because it was my only year in DCI. :-(. Orlando was terrible. We stayed at some reservation or something, which had better facilities than some people.

There's no limit to the amount of a particular instrument on the field. The only thing that matters is that a corps doesn't exceed the total number of performers on the field which I believe is 154 at this point. @@BRUXXUS Nice. What are your thoughts on this new style of show design...no shakos, form-fitting uniforms, massive props, body movement, narration, amplification, synths, indoor stadium, etc? @@MeowfaceMusic That's a really interesting question. (oh boy... if they only knew how the activity would evolve, lol) So, I've always been a big fan of using motion and movement other than 100% marching. It's all about how well it's designed into the whole. When amps were first allowed, I wasn't a huge fan, but I also learned from percussionists that most mallet instruments weren't made to be played loud enough to be heard on a field, so pushing them hard meant wearing them out faster. I felt a similar with synths. And I think those new elements were pretty clumsily implemented by most corps when they were first allowed, but they've mostly started learning how to use them to enhance the overall production. After watching through all of Courtney's reaction videos, I've started realizing that most the older shows have lost a bit of magic for me. Having a properly amplified pit, with tasteful and smart use of synths really does add a LOT to modern shows, I think. I'm still a little undecided about how often they use them to fill out the low frequencies of the music, but I think if it's used to round out the ranges lower than what tubas can play, it's okay. The visual side of modern design is the part I'm less thrilled with. Yeah, I really like incorporating dance and other movement into a show, but I don't like just running from one staging area to another. I miss the big mass-movement and sound moments that drill and music can create that's unlike any other form of performing in the world. I'd really just like to see more big and creative drill effects added back into these shows more often. I think keeping the staging and dance stuff in for nuance and certain musical enhancements is great, but I want to see more of those huge drill moments that make the crowd go absolutely bonkers! The new style uniforms.... ehh... I don't mind the form fitting style. Actually like it, but I do miss the various hats. I think they brought a lot of presence to the field. I also understand designing uniforms to match the show style, I also miss the identity of each corps and the feeling like the uniform was something special. I felt honor every time I put on my uniform at BK. I'm not sure that's a thing anymore. As for props... ehh, I can take 'em or leave 'em. Like everything else: if they're incorporated into the design of a show from the ground up, and work well to create the effects, then I'm all for it! As for modern shows that I think are groundbreaking and inspiring.... Probably most the ones Courtney has reacted to. I think BC does a great job with their designs. SCV has always been innovative and entertaining, BD, of course, although their drill is usually .... not my favorite... I also do like a lot of what BK has done in the past 5 or so years.

Please watch Blue Knights 2017! I marched 5 years and out of every season I performed, that was my hands down favorite show. Some of my greatest memories are from then 💙

Commenting before I watch this. This is the one I was waiting for, based on your reactions to the other videos. One of my all-time faves.

And I wasn't disappointed. Too bad you are in the states and there are no drum corps. Yesterday actually would have been finals night.

I was there! An amazing show from start to finish, this is what Drum Corps should be, not loads of dancing about and pushing scenery like these days!

I do love this show. IT's not pristine PR .. but the music book is WAY up there. This is one of the earlier years for PR to put a lot of body movement in the brass line.... and it shows. They had some tuning issues on finals night ... but that's ok. It was an emotional show. I'd rather hear a flawed show with passion .. than a stale show that's super clean ANY DAY!!!! It also says a lot that you can LISTEN to this show and not have to watch it. I know I wore this track out on my ipod back in the day.

The recording from semis is so good. Phantom's music this year was on another level.

Fun fact about the Marching Euphoniums, they weight 7-8 lbs (3-3.5 kg). To help train during rehearsals they would put ankle weights around the bell of the horn to add some extra weight so that during the show, they wouldn't feel as heavy. To get an idea of what that entails, try to hold an 8 lb (3.5 kg) weight up in front of your face with your elbows bent at about a 90 degree angle for as long as you can without your arms shaking. (like this live.staticflickr.com/124/399443341_7280476e23_b.jpg ) Then imagine having to do that for at least 10-11 minutes.

We never did that at BD in the 80s....the King K-80 was a bell-heavy beast in the first place....good thing I played soprano!
