Those that enjoy the great barrier island house, I suggest taking a look at Herbst Architects projects which my guess is that house takes inspiration from. There's even a great barrier island Herbst house not far from there.

It's always so strange when people from overseas say off-grid is a feature, as much as 25 to 30% of new Zealand homes are off grid either water power or both

The houses are often interesting inside, but outside, it's just boxes. And surprisingly repetitious houses even inside, sometimes in what they put in the houses (furnishings, finishes). Nice houses, but I'm waiting for a house that's not a box. It seems like vast wealth, huge footprint, luxury, and great views = the 'best homes' of New Zealand. OK, they are amazing houses, but way out of most people's imagination of 'home.'

I can also see uniformity in the materials or design like black, steels, concrete, timber all together. Nonetheless, still beautifully designed houses.
