NZ have always been 2nd class test team. We get half the number of tours per year and when we do we only get 2 tests per series. Imagine if we had the same number of annual matches as the big 4.

@@RatelHBadger NZC begged CA to cancel the third test of Australia's last tour there (to be hosted in Auckland: easily NZ's largest city!). They can't afford it as they lose money hosting tests as not enough kiwis show up. Maybe kiwis need to get out and support the sport so it makes them money, then they can play more tests?

The coaches gave him so many chances to sort his shit out. Played for Central Districts at a time where they were the best and a lot of their players couldn't get into the national team. Ryder angry drunk. Sinclair was too much of a weirdo. Spearman dropped for being average went to county cricket and became a legend but played in England as a local player meaning he could never play for NZ again.

And Frank & Oram had pretty good careers by NZ standards - Anderson crapped-out due to chronic injury (it happens). If anyone here in NZ deserves a bit more love it's Jimmy Neesham.

Nice video Jarrod, also would be interesting to touch on the era just before Mccullum. It was an absolute shambles. Vettori was a one man team for 4-5 years there, constantly having to save us with the bat walking in at 80-6

Very big fan of Vettori here, he was always there to defend the ball and frustrate the bowlers, the bowlers can get through the entire lineup this guy just wouldn't give up, and his bowling, what an underrated spinner, if you ever walked down the pitch on him, rarely I saw batsmen not getting dismissed

I always felt the post-Hadlee 90s were our lowest times, a rotation of terrible players coupled with ill-discipline and a very negative team culture. Vettori's era at least had the beginnings of a really decent rebuild, even if it didn't always result in consistent wins

The whole second team thing is quite true. It even rings true about their legends. Daniel Vettori is perhaps their greatest spinner(hope Jarrod makes a video about him). But he played in an era of Warne and Murli. Hadlee is their best all rounder,but he played when Kapil Dev and Ian Botham were in their prime. Kane is definitely their greatest batter,but he is overshadowed by Smith and Kohli..

The blessing in disguise for NZ cricket is the little amount of cricket they play during the year and as their players are not on huge contracts with the board, the NZC allows these players to participate in county and other domestic leagues oversees. . . . This is one of the main reasons that the players are fresh and motivated when it comes to big ICC tournaments, where they always punch above their weights. . . . With so many international players backing out of the 100 and the IPL, I am sure that NZ players will reap benefits and be sought after due to their availability. . . . Guptill, Munro were playing PSL. Ferguson, Neesham, Finn Allen, Glen Philips, Sodhi are playing the T20 blast.

some indian fans are really doing everything they can to prove that NZ did'nt deserved to win, calling them home bullies and many more things. even if let's assume that NZ path was easy for this WTC but still they have come this far from many adversities. from their logic ind did'nt deserved to win 1983 world cup because west indies were better and were coming from back of really good hard cricket. but the fact still remains that ind won and that win created a huge impact on what indian cricket is now. simillarly this win for kiwis means a lot more than just a title and this will help them in future. i wish martin crowe was alive today. his last wish was to see NZ winning an ICC trophy.

Jameson can bat. He used to be an opening batsman and first change bowler. I briefly taught him on placement when I was a trainee teacher. 6' 5" at 16yrs. I said to him at that stage he could become a specialist bowler, but not to hurry, as his tall frame would take time to grow into it in order to avoid injury. Obviously he's had smarter more knowledgeable people than me advising him. I know through colleagues that his father knows cricket and he comes from a good family. He's also a hell of a nice, intelligent young man. Was respectful of his peers and teachers. I was not at all surprised to see him come on to the international stage and succeed.

One seriously special thing I notice among the Kiwis that I don't see in any other team is that, they always focus on the larger picture. Always play as a team. Every single player performs his role even if a small one. Their batsman almost always get starts and make the job easier for others. Their bowlers always hunt in packs rather than focusing on individual records. And they are the best fielding team in the world at the moment. And I think the leadership of Kane Williamson brings that out. I've never seen him angry at a player for not performing, never scolds his teammates, graciously accepts every loss and just focuses on his job. No excuses Most of the other teams, however depend on Large individual contributions to win Go the Kiwis!!! Lot more success to come.

As a kiwi who learned to love the NZ team back in the the beige days it's really pleasing to have the long, hard road so wonderfully encapsulated. Obviously I'd be over the moon if this is the start of a dynasty. I think we're perhaps one world class spinner away from that. it's not impossible to imagine the NZC trophy cabinet needing an extension. Just quietly - has there been many, (or any?) more dramatic days of sport than the 2nd Test vs S.A. in 1953. The 22,000 there that day witnessed something remarkable and unforgettable.

I think the rise of NZ under Kane Williamson was overdue. 2 consecutive Worldcup finals is no easy feat. In WTC they dominated the best batting lineup in the world. The decade might belong to NZ cricket if they have a system in place like OP pointed out. ( IPL increasingly bringing the big bucks is substantially raising the level of the game )

This is such a good take ... people don't play cricket here for the money, or to pick up the honeys at the bar. Jamieson could do virtually anything sporty - he could be an All Black lock, he could get an NBA contract. For such an exceptional physical specimen and athletic talent, the world's literally his oyster (in this nation in particular). He's there because he really wants to be there - and that's the most intimidating thing (or it should be). The beast wants to play cricket, he's loving it. He's diving-into the deep end and grabbing the cricket world by its nuts, because he wants it - not because he's a failed rugby player, etc, but because cricket in NZ has really gotten some real, proper prestige in recent years.

This is true for NZ, I think the main reason for that Brendon McCullum, he changed the cricket scenario for NZ and the world, they can cash money by playing leagues, and he developed an attitude of never give up playing cricket in a good way, but NZ was playing fair cricket that's another fact, he brought the aura to cricket, to play aggressive giving everything in the field, fair cricket, and he's one of the stars who helped t20 cricket to grow, now where it is, the first innings of ipl changed the world cricket to look cricket differently and gave the start to ipl, which was needed the most

Been following NZ cricket since the "Black wash", a series in Bang in 2010 where NZ lost 4-0 and the fans back in NZ starting burning posters. . . . John Wright was hired as coach and he spurred the Kiwis to an unexpected semifinal finish in the WC 2011, to be the only non Asian team to make it the last 4. My only criticism with NZ cricket since then is the handling of Mitchell Mcglenhagan. Why he was sidelined at a time when he could have been fastest to 100 Odi wkts is a mystery

It is a bizarre thought to consider that New Zealand could have started off their time in Test cricket with a team built around this core of players: 1. Stewie Dempster 2. 3. 4. Giff Vivian 5. Martin Donnelly 6. 7. 8. Ken James (wk) 9. Clarrie Grimmett 10. Jack Cowie 11. Fill those gaps with even half-decent players - like a young Bert Sutcliffe - and that's a serious team. But of course those players never took the field together, for all the reasons you've covered

Walter Hadlee is another example of the leadership lineage which produced Kane Williamson. The accountant leading the team to those four draws in England in 49, whilst doing the accounts. No other nation would have that.

Got beaten by Aussie in Australia- the two game changing players were not playing. Warm up match in England. 6 of the first stringers played one of those warm up matches and only played one innings in that one game. India was at South Hampton practicing a week before NZ. India has an excellent batting record against swing - second only to NZ ( check our Brad Hoggs podcast) and conditions in England are actually not as similar to NZ as people make out. Refer to Hoggs podcast again. India are the better team in India. NZ clearly the better team in NZ. NZ won the championship game in England. Kiwis have failed in Aussie like India has failed in NZ. The England team thst took on NZ was a second string team as was the kiwi team thst took on the English in the second test. All the history aside. The Kiwis are deserving world Champs. Let's hope India doesn't convince the ICC to destroy the final game by introducing more tests. It's the ultimate test. The ultimate pressure cooker. No second chances. That is what India wants because time and time again they're struggling struggling handle the pressure that is so very unique unique them given the love there country has for the game. NZ has been in enough finals and would've loved another crack at it but didn't hear complaints from the winners back then, just as India never complained about the final test format until they lost.

I am not sure about NZ not being a threatening team. For us Indians they've had the wood over us when it mattered the most, since that Champions trophy in Kenya and in the recent WC 2019 and WTC 2021 to name a few and still NZ is my favourite team after India. It hurt me more when they lost that Final in WC 2019 the way they did, it was just heartbreaking to see them distraught after that loss. They've always been humble about the way they play their game and that's why they are at the top in that regards no other team comes close and now they're deservingly world champions.

The one team anybody would be ok losing to would be NZ. They've had their share of bad luck and if some luck played a part in winning the WTC, then be it. It really shouldn't matter much as they have been consistently putting their hearts out to achieve this for so long that this shouldn't really be considered fluky.

Rodney Redmond also deserved a mention. Scored a century and a fifty on debut but never played another test match because the guy he replaced got fit again for next tour to England. And selectors were to stubborn to select Redmond again.

Another name that didn't play for NZ Tom Pritchard - contemporary of Cowie - never played for NZ. Played for Warwickshire. Started off genuinely fast, became an extremely skillful fast-medium operator. 818 FC wickets at 23.00. Cowie and Pritchard as opening pair would have been truly formidable.

Our away record needs further work, but the hyper focus on it can be pretty hypocritical. We've actually got one of the tidier ones going around now with recent victories in the UAE and England, and Australia couldn't see off India at home...Australia probably the only other side who might have deserved a place in the final, but they dug their own grave.

"NZ got a practice series against England right before the final" Well, A) we haven't played a test in England since 2015, and even then that was only 2 tests, India played 4 tests only 2 or 3 years ago, and B) it was likely scheduled well before NZ were declared as finalists, to go ahead regardless so that both England and NZ get some game time even if neither qualified.
