Oliver you did it. Just 13 minutes into the video I paused & sat down at the keyboard - only 49 keys since I'm traveling. Started the exercises. Then the whole pathway opened up. The piano no longer seemed overwhelming to just try "improvising." Thank you Thank you Thank you.

I haven't really been playing much since the end of high school (7 years ago). My joy and motivation had disappeared. My original ambition to play music had been motivated by a desire to create music. However, the teaching I received focussed either on learning other people's music through reading sheet music (something I ultimately found tedious), or it focussed on analytical music theory that seemed hard to really put to use. So I hit a wall, blamed my own lack of progress on my self, and shifted my attention towards other matters. While I didn't play anymore, listening to jazz got me through university. However, I never thought I could learn to play it - I thought those musicians ought to have been born with a special musical intuition that I lacked. However, your lessons -which I have only really scratched the surface of so far - have brought me back to music! Now I can just sit by my instrument and play and play - improvising as I go. And it's more fun that it ever was. Much more relaxed and creative. This is what I imagined playing music to be like when I started 15-ish years ago. Thank you!

Best and warm regards to you too! Thank you for a great lessons on handgrips! They gave me a huge level up in my impro not only on piano (a keyboard is no longer a mystery to me)- as it raised my overall understanding of harmony, and how is everything connected in music. I am 31 y.o. self-taught, and your lessons (with free online berklee jazz school) gave me an ability of which I always dreamed of - to sit at piano and improvise for as long as I want without repeating chords too much and easily finding the right scales to play over. Thank you!

Great thing about the handgrips is you can think of scales as two handgrips which gives you a visual clue but also as you need to transpose them it helps you think in intervals and navigate those changing keys which are difficult on piano
@thezenbum3 жыл бұрын
master work. using minor pentachords. and their transitions intorudincg the next accident lined up. realising that the second pentachord not changing the tonality of the first and grip. it is going ti be the third grip that transits into next tonality on circle. using cirlce of fourths for minor grips results in this using circle of fifths for major grips gives us the other side of this reflection. i liked this practice so very much because it allowed me to divide the minor scale into 2 modules which use the same grip. great.
