I was stationed in Newport News, while CVN-72 was being built in the shipyard back in 88 -89. It is crazy how fast you can be in a really crappy neighborhood and then you turn two corners and it looks like Homes of the Rich and Famous.

Sick of all the comparisons. I’m from Portsmouth grew up in the 80’s and 90’s when you couldn’t even walk through the city if you or your family wasn’t known. But times change be happy that they are cleaning up these neighborhoods and making it safer for our youth rather then debating on who hood the toughest. Fun fact: there’s a hood everywhere you go and everywhere you go there’s someone who will peel your cap no matter were you are so don’t ever be fooled by how something looks nor take it lightly.

Shit that's nothing. If you want to see about 7 projects right next to each other go look up Mother Gaston Blvd in Brooklyn,N.Y. Not only are they right next to each other, but some are like 12 stories high. The most projects on one street in the country.

yeah my uncle retired 4 years ago from Newport news shipyard & I left Norfolk 4.5 years ago But most of my family is still in the 757, just like any other place the 757 has its share of hoods HOWEVER the 7 cities is a very good place to settle down & raise a family, although the 7 cities combined that make up Hampton roads are flourishing & has alot of family oriented & night life party scene it still has a small town feel...I just left Oakland 45 minutes ago to drive around & after living here in Stockton California & traveling to the bay area, Sacramento & even down to Los Angeles it really makes my hometown of Hampton roads feel more family friendly & a great place to live....Hampton roads has some of the nicest & cleanest shopping malls & neighborhoods I have ever seen & I been all over the eastcoast & now live in Stockton California.

I'm there all the time for work. It's only a few areas to worry about down there most other areas is older people. But like anywhere else if you got a hundred houses and 10 of them are drug houses you don't notice the other 90 they're all doing what they're supposed to be doing you only notice those 10 some of my best clients live down there they're great people in that hood

Newport News is a long narrow city and you were driving around and around in the lower two miles of it! Some truly great people grew up in this area! Next time your in town take some time to visit Pinketts Beach, Huntington Beach and Park, the 9,000 acre Newport News Park, the Mariners Museum and its 500 acre park, the Virginia Living Museum. Drive through some of the other neighborhoods and enjoy the beautiful mature trees, sidewalks and attractive moderately priced homes! NN is also home to the largest shipyard in the nation where we build the biggest and baddest ships in the world!

In the late 60's, NN was pretty decent. The only really rough section was on Jefferson Avenue headed through the really old-town section and some of the low-income housing apartments!

There are a lot of good people that live down there some of my favorite clients have been there for years there's really only a few bad areas otherwise it's a lot of older people the big problem with violence is the drugs it breeds but when people can't afford a car the buses don't run 24 hours a day and there's almost no place to work cuz there are no stores down there really people got to feed the families somehow some of the greatest people I've ever known come out of downtown just saying plus it's one of the only places in the world where carrying a large stick means you're not looking for drugs or trouble LOL

There is wisdom in downtown Newport News. The dangers are common. I lived there and it's nice. To be afraid of the people there is pointless. Reason be, fear is what sections you "down there". "Bad Newz" is an illusion that makes you look like food to us locals. Also, when I moved from there more up town. I found more people pretending they loved in hoods more threatening. I was stopped by police omw to school accusing me of someone else and almost searched without permission (understandable though, I was late to school), and my first apartment was broken into while I was home. So the the only thing "BAD" about Newport "NEWZ" is the news your getting.

just like every other place in this generation, these hoods once was really tough & vicious...of course I'm talking about the 70's,80's & early 90's before social media & gentrification....these hoods would be flooded with goons after school let out everyday...that's why we have so much talent in the 757, we use to play tackle football against rival neighborhoods like every week & full court basketball games...its just weird that the basketball courts in this generation are often empty even on beautiful sunny days.

My city is so small if we have any bodegas they are more store like. I didn't really encounter a bodega with like bullet proof walls till this 1 time I went to Springfield New Jersey with my mother for her spanish church trip. That was a whole new city and I was older of the children. I didn't realise how city it was till now.

Jugga man Richmond and Norfolk at least have solid historical areas and amenities to balance out their hoods. Portsmouth doesn’t. P-town ain’t the worst place in the world but definitely not a spot I’d be checking to visit.

You should go to camden New Jersey. When I was visiting jersey my sister needed to go their rq and when I tell you that place is hood its hood🤦🏽‍♀️ boarded houses, junkies on the side of the road, police yellow taping, kids on the streets selling stuff to make quick money, abandoned houses vandalized or being used as hide outs. Man go to that place its crazy

You still got Midtown (Dresden) and Uptown (Beechmont and Aquaduct). From da duct to the lawns lol.

A few years back there was three guys live streaming sitting in a car at the park. I can't remember if it was Hampton or NN. But someone rolled up while they were livestreaming and started shooting. You probably can find this on here if you search for it. It is crazy down there.

Salute to my old school Hampton University! I got plenty of memories in the 90's of hittin the clubs up on Jefferson Ave in Newport News. Harlem Nights was a dope club. I also remember those gun shots in the club parking lot too. I grew up in Newark though, so the shit didn't faze me!

@@al5603 Yes sir....My boy Chauncy use to sell in all the projects back then....I remember the first time I went with him to Ptown selling crack...it was on a 4th of july & we were 21 years old ,we started about 5 pm & stopped about 12 midnight....We hit Jeffrey Wilson, Ida Barbour, Swanson Homes, Lincoln Park & some other projects I cant recall there names now...when he finished he asked me to count all the money in the glove compartment & he made $1200 on that 4th of July...cuz really opened my eyes to the drug game....
