ATLANTA - John Ramsey surprised a burglar in his home Tuesday and fought with the man before the intruder fled, his lawyer said.
Attorney Lin Wood said Ramsey was not seriously injured in the incident at the home in northwest Atlanta. Wood said Ramsey saw the man leaving with two large bags, but he didn't know what was in them.
Ramsey told a KUSA reporter that the intruder apparently made off with a computer, money, his wife's "Kmart jewelry," clothes and Ramsey's wallet.
"Mr. Ramsey has a gun vault, and we suspect that some weapons were taken," said Deputy Atlanta Police Chief C.B. Jackson.
Jackson said Ramsey was locked in a bathroom but was able to free himself and call police. Ramsey sustained some cuts and bruises and an injury to his left eye, said his physician, Dr. Richard Kauffman.
Wood said his client "got a good look at the man."
"It's a horrible invasion of your privacy and your feeling of safety," Ramsey told KUSA. "We certainly went through that with JonBenét. It certainly has resurfaced. Our house here is we think ultra-secure. Again he was able to bash down a door and just come in."
Ramsey said he had just returned home from an errand at Home Depot.
"There was a car in the driveway, and the doors were all locked upstairs," said Ramsey, whose wife, Patsy, was at his side during a brief interview at his home.
"So I couldn't figure who was here, if anybody," he said.
"I confronted the guy in the hallway. He had a bag of mine, and I said, 'Give it to me.' He wouldn't give it to me. I turned around to say I was going to call police. He jumped me and we scuffled for what seemed like a long time," Ramsey said.
He said he was then locked in a bathroom as the man fled. A short while later, he got out of the bathroom and telephoned police.
Ramsey said the intruder left in what he thought was a Chevrolet Cavalier, possibly light gray in color.
Jackson said a composite drawing of the suspect will be done at a later time when Ramsey formally gives his statement at police headquarters.
"We'll work with him," Quigley said.
Quigley and Wood said they didn't know if the intruder knew that Ramsey was the father of JonBenét Ramsey, the 6-year-old beauty queen who was found killed in her Boulder home Dec. 26, 1996. Her parents moved to Atlanta after the slaying.
Jackson said police were treating it as "a burglary that turned into a home invasion."
Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said his office will contact Atlanta police later this week, once more information is available, just to have a record of the facts. Beckner said his office was not involved in the burglary investigation.
In interviews with reporters, the Ramseys said the death of their daughter left them concerned about the security of their home and said their new Atlanta house would have state-of-the-art security. Patsy Ramsey told reporters that the Atlanta residence lacked the many hiding places of their former Boulder home.

If you truly believed someone broke into your home and killed your child you would make sure that all of your homes afterwards had the best security system available.
