A 26-year-old woman employee at EY Pune died in what appears to be a death due to a toxic work environment. The employee's mother penned a letter to the EY India chairperson referring to the company as a workplace that glorifies overwork. The case sheds light on the need for workplace reforms. The EY, so far, has not issued any comment or clarification. How can companies ensure the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of their staff? Join News9's Shweta Kothari for insights.

Right to disconnect is the need of the hour. The current normal is you are 24 hours employer's servant. Late sittings are glorified, companies don't understand that aside from our work responsibility we also have a responsibility to our families. Even after working 9 hours at office, you will be getting calls/ WhatsApp while travelling home and at home too .... Saturday/Sunday will be the same. I don't care if the CEO is working 16 hours a day and weekends, I don't care if Modiji is working 18 hours a day..... I am not either one of them. Unfortunately, the situation is such that all employers use a simple answer 'we do it, so you have to do it too'. And most of the time these are the people who have no family life, they don't want to go home and so make life miserable for others too.....

Not just in private organisations, in Central Govt. organizations too the conditions have worsened drastically. Higher officials (IAS) ones sir till late in office everyday. Forget 9 to 5:30, it's 9 to 7 almost everyday. Even after that whatsapp and calls.... Saturday/Sunday you are expected to be available either to come to office or for work from home. It's in the service rules itself : you are 24 hours government servant. The promotion of senior officers depends on their image in the eyes of even their seniors so they sit late and take on work that they know the existing staff is insufficient for. And earlier, work used to get done in stages....like important stuff would be done by seniors, less important work by their juniors and so on. There are like 4-5 layers at least in the work hierarchy. Nowadays, all work is dumped on the bottom 1-2. biometric attendance has been mandated. It's a good measure....but why only in time is strictly monitored. Why is not there a limit on out time too..... And the funny thing is most of the time the task/file is urgent only till it is pending with you. You will be asked to sit late, come on Saturday/Sunday and put up the file. After it reaches 2-3 levels up, it will stagnate for days.....where is the urgency then. Earlier Government jobs did not suffer from this culture but over the past 5-6 years both late sitting and work from home on holidays/weekends is being forced there too. Several people I know, both in private and government jobs are suffering from stress and anxiety disorders. It affects their family too.... Till there is a clear distinction between work and family time, and it is insured that work stress does not encroach on family time, the problem will not be resolved. The employers/government needs to realise that they have a responsibility towards the well being of people too.

Glad I resigned couple of months back from there. Another team called EY GDS global delivery services is even worse. Senior managers, associate directors and directors all make employees work like hell. They use performance improvement plan as a weapon to force you to resign. There have been multiple cases of cardiac failures and brain strokes in these teams. They send several emails saying they are so concerned about mental health and well being and then your manager kicks the crap out of you. Even when issues were highlighted by resigning employees in exit interviews, they won’t take action since they need these ‘performance oriented, results driven’ managers to bring in ‘ operational efficiency’ and show FTEs efficiency saved in the year end. EY is a sh!y show in india.. especially business support teams. They talk about social styles while completely taking biased and bigoted views. One manager said she is a big fan of Simon Sinek, if he sees what she is doing to her employees he will go suicide. Just take my advice: EY GDS like ey Indian company is an extremely toxic culture with unnecessary stress induced toxic work culture. So stay away

As someone who's worked in 2 (KPMG and PwC) of these Big 4's as tech consultant, this doesn't surprise. The competition, pressure and expectation to perform is insane. And despite giving my best and getting top ratings someone who's always in good books of manager will get away with promotions and hike. I once had a terrible mental breakdown and fainted in office and was rushed to the hospital by my colleagues. Thankfully I got away with minor injuries. Our Indian workculture seriously needs to change especially in Big 4's, but I doubt it will. The vicious cycle will continue.

Although there is a fixed work time in my company and working overtime without pay is not encouraged, they still manipulate us into volunteering for no pay OT by saying we will get additional days off or gift vouchers and stuff which ultimately is not the case. Today, we mourn the loss of a beautiful soul, a tragic reminder of the fragility of the human life. Our heart goes out to the grieving parents. In our often-hurried world, it’s easy to forget the importance of emotional well-being and yet again this incident serves as a poignant reminder of how crucial it is to prioritise mental and emotional health. • Let us together, create a culture of openness and support where sharing our challenges is met with compassion. • Let us strive to create an environment where reaching out for help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness. Remember, you are not alone. We are here to listen, to support, and to offer a helping hand. • Let’s not forget that behind every smile can be a hidden struggle and together, we can be the light that guides each other and conquers the toughest battles. 💚

I have a patient who comes for therapy post a shoulder surgery and this patient gives me first hand report of how her employer in EY harasses her every day. There is no consideration or empathy after a major surgery, even a simple enquiry as to how she is feeling after the surgery. A very very sad state of affairs. My heart goes out to Anna’s family. Only when people speak up will change happen.

Even if I start following strict work hours and focus on my life in Work-Life Balance, there will be some desperate Ravi/colleague who is ready to go beyond to lick boots and managers are the masters who support this activity. I see my foreign colleague going on long leaves while we have to literally beg and give mediocre reasons for leave.

I had initiated public grievance and escalated upto PM office seeking enforcement of psychology training for HR professionals. The officials played ping-pong with my grievance across departments and finally left it in the dust bin. The problem with India is, elected people (who enjoy ultimate power) are uneducated and expected to control the educated govt. employees (the IAS, IPS et al). Such employees know how to hoodwink their bosses (Ministers).

If only she had complained to her Mother and she would have dissuaded her daughter to discontinue….but the whole thing would have backfired on her and being her first job her termination letter would have been pretty unpleasant. A Catch 22 Situation. I feel so sorry for this young girl so lost and miserable in the Big Bad World of Corporate Culture! Only a Mother can know this Pain! What was the Medical reason given for death..I couldn’t get to that part in the letter! Sad and heartbreaking. Don’t wish it on any young Person. So hard on the Parents. It's sad. Bosses are there to exploit but working culture is destroyed not only due to bosses but employees too especially in software industry. If any employee will work ethically like not bootlick their bosses , do not pick call at home in night, fair remuneration. That employee will be sidlined and demeaned not only by the boss but other employees as well. Employees always does bootlicking of bosses by working for them overtime. Boss as a human will always get pleased by this. Many of employees who are not efficient always try to prey upon the qualified ones, their remuneration. So in India work culture doesn exist. Neither educational institutes nor parents nor employees themselves want to establish a good working environment ethics. Everyone wants to crush the other by unethical means. And inefficient employees resort more to do harm in order to shine in the eyes of bosses.

My sister works in E&Y . In just 1.5 years , she is done. Culture sucks and leadership often exploits the new joiners by paying peanuts and doesn’t even pay cab bills. In a place like Bangalore, they pay you less and then expect you to visit client site at your own cost and then requires you to claim it in the tool. So, whatever she earns goes into cab bills and indirectly they block some amount of your salary in paying cab bills. Then you are actually working for say 20-30 rupees salary instead of 50-60. It is pathetic. She is under constant stress and have developed so much health issues. Work culture is so toxic and constant judgement. It’s really hard to survive in such a place.

Are you thinking that its happening only in one organisation. Its happening in most of the organisations and MNCs but they ensure that those matters will not reach to outside public. Its all about set of toxic managers existed in every organisation and MNCs. Company ask us to exit but they never take action on them because its not companys pain. Right. We think that we are living a respectable life but we are slaves to them. No one will share these kind of things with you (Except your loved ones) because they want that you also fall into same trap and feel that pain. MESSAGE TO FRESHERS AND CA STUDENTS

I have experienced this culture in Big 4s first hand. Promising sun and moon to clients and pushing associates to deliver are rewarded. And if associates take leave, they will be replaced citing business emergency. And no one wants to have associates in bench. What is required is stress management for young professionals and ability to take leaves without repurcussion.
