Orini Kaipara was a great TV presenter, she did not dwell on her moku or Māori heritage, and all of NZ accepted her based on her skills and professionalism. That said, more recently all things Māori have become revered without acknowledging anything negative past or present. Thus Māorification has accelerated and become a political/activist/woke movement rather than a solution to their problems navigating modern day life. Victimhood and colonization are pushed instead of Māori tribal leadership showing a common sense approach to the way forward and reinforcing personal responsibility.

Mate, I'm a New Zealander. White. Not a Woke leftie. This is called in the Maori language a "Moko Kauae". It is a traditional Maori tattoo symbolizing her faith folk and family and leadership role within the "whanau" or community. You can't just get that tattooed on your face unless you are a recognised leader within the whanau unless it is bestowed upon you by community leaders. The "moko" or chin tattoo is common amongst both genders, but the lip tattoo is only gifted upon the "wahine" or women, as their kiss is the breathe of life.

Just so you know, not all the Americans in the comments have a problem with the tattoo. I wish I was Maori just so I could get one. I know I could just a take a design to some reputable shop and get them to do it, but it wouldn't mean the same thing. I think a lot of cultures are stronger community-wise in comparison to the US since they have rites of passage like that, but we've lost ours.

It is now common for Christians to wear tummy shirts, tank tops, low cut tops, with vulgar imagery on their bodies as tattoos or as artwork on their property. Their language is vulgar and they will get drunk. If you say something about this, you're seen as a prude or "legalist" even though that's not at all what legalism means. Notice that in those neighborhoods that were safe everyone generally wore the same clothes that were modest, the same hairstyles that were prim and proper, or covered their hair in scarves or hats, and spoke the same dialect. All these didn't define them, it reflected what they were on the inside, how they were raised, how they were taught, etc. I think it was better when we had a relatively monolithic Christian culture where we had clothing, speech, and behaviour common to us because our internal motivations were monolithic as well. This paves the way for safety since we generally know what to expect from each other.

I know these are jokes, but on a more solemn note: I personally think the haka is cool sounding, and the mogo is really beautiful looking--wish I could get one! Since they're New Zealanders, I imagine other New Zealanders are used to it and they're native there so I don't think it's a problem. It'd be different if it was something that was happening in Greenland or something since it's completely alien from their culture. The hijab issue is completely different, a tattoo doesn't endanger anyone, not knowing what your attacker looks like can endanger people. They shouldn't have won that case.
