I personally enjoyed it, but I grew up in a household that watched quite a lot of musicals. If you like musicals, especially some of the older ones where the acting is a bit more over-the-top, you'll like this. Otherwise, forget it. Also keep this movie in mind next time you watch the Dark Knight movies. It's hilarious to imagine Batman breaking into song about Santa Fe.

I first saw it in middle school during video production class in the mid 90s. a cheesy energetic yet enjoyable film. I remember classmates were hooked on it singing "I'm the King of New York" after class so it was doing something right.

I love Newsies, but I'm a big Broadway fan and consider Alan Menkin one of my favorite composers. Though I do think the actual Broadway soundtrack sounds better than the movie version. I get why some might not be into it. It's an odd film.

The boys in the film weren't singers they were just actors 😅 But yeah the vocals and harmonies of Broadway has everything on my children here. But Michael (Skittery) is a great singer and deserved more solos.

this is one of my top favorite movies ever. this is where I discovered Christian Bale and have been his fan girl ever since. he has such a beautiful voice, it's a shame he doesn't sing more. course after years of the "Bat Voice" his singing may suffer. you were a lot gentler on this than I thought

I really love this movie. However, the true story it's based on is actually pretty interesting too. Yes, there was a real newsboy strike in New York City, and it did have a big impact on how America's child labor laws were formed.

Maybe the fact that newsies is played as a Broadway musical is the same reason so many people dislike the phantom of the opera movie. Many of the cast emote and project which doesn't work for a movie. And the big choreography numbers take you out of the movie too. I don't know. I just want Doug to review phantom so bad! Lol

+sewthernbelle Nah, the phantom of the opera movie just sucks in general. Too focused on finding big stars for their movie they forgot it was such a strong show vocally and the singing has to be really good

+thegladve singing in the rain wasn't a Broadway musical though. It was a movie musical. And they filmed it as a movie musical. Unlike newsies which as Doug said, was filmed as a Broadway musical. like where they follow the dancers rather than film all the dancers at once which phantom tended to do. Sure the actors emote and project in singing in the rain, but there were a lot of quiet numbers too. Plus the plot was more focused.

Didn't see this movie, but I clearly understand that it became a Broadway musical hit which people gave it spectacular. This was Doug's another recently Nostalgia Critic episode, but he pull it off because somebody talked about it as long as Lindsay from Nostalgia Chick explained until Doug review it. Yup, you can see young Christian Bale plays a New Yorker which he was done many time from "American Psycho," "American Hustle," and "The Big Short" because he talks like a New Yorker accent. Not much talk like a goofy Batman talk.

Just watched it for the first time. Liked it more than a lot of other musical movies that are regarded as better. Great production design, a couple of memorable songs and semi solid acting. Pleasantly surprised.

the thing is he was saying that the broadway show was a new idea. i thought it was already a play before the movie came out. i once found the original soundtrack at an old movie store and i could've sworn it said it was the original broadway soundtrack and it was dated before the movie. i could be remembering it wrong though.

I typically hate musicals but when I saw this film in class, I actually really enjoyed it. I'm a big fan if Christian Bale and I think he's a really good actor. And I agree when you said he had good support. I think the supporting actors were good and I also really enjoy Bill Pullman. I'm a girl but I'm not into Broadway or really into musicals but I enjoyed this film. Not only that but every single time someone talks about musicals, they say that suddenly breaking into song and dance isn't realistic and people don't do that...but I do it all the freaking time. I DO randomly sing and I DO randomly start dancing. I don't think I'm the only one that does it but it's a lot more realistic than people give it credit for. Granted, I suck at singing and I nearly break my neck every time I dance so it's not anywhere near as good as a musical, but my point still stands, it DOES happen in real life.

Fun fact: a good portion of this movie was filmed at Disney's Hollywood Studios (Disney MGM Studios back then), so not only did these kids have to deal with complicated choreography, they had to do it in the sweltering Florida humidity. Major props to them for not passing out.

I can recite this entire movie, songs and dialogue, start to finish from memory. It is one of my favorite musicals, even if it is a bit hammy. And honestly, it is not the Broadway style of this movie that has gotten girls to like it in recent years....their attraction can be summed up in three little words "Baby Christian Bale."

Oddly enough, I actually have a mellow opinion on this movie. I watched it a number of years ago, enjoyed it very much at the time, but it didn't stick with me. I think part of it was my expectations: I went into it not really expecting anything more than a fun Disney musical, and that's what it is. Cheesy, and not-so-realistic child-friendly version of a historical issue that's really more gritty and complex. Fun, but not one that lasts for me.

As someone who adores this film and the play, I completely get every criticism here, because those are the same reasons I love this movie. It’s a wonderful way to teach kids about an interesting and really important part of history that sometimes gets glossed over. The Newsie strike was pivotal in the abolishment of unregulated child labor and unregulated labor in general. For me, the only downside is Christian Bale, who acts and dances fine in this, but his singing to me was a bit.... meh.

It's good if you like musicals, turn of the century stories, teenage boys being adorable, and can deal with cheesiness. Because as much as I love the film, it does have some faults. But it's really good!

I’m in the gray area with this one. I just don’t care much about it as a movie, but the stage show is a better idea since it has more of a stage musical quality than a feature film. The music is decent, but Bale’s singing is not that good and sounds like he is sleepwalking through it but his dancing isn’t bad and his acting is fine

This is exactly why I never cared for the movie, despite loving the songs and the choreography. It wanted to be a Broadway musical, it should have been on the stage from the get-go, and I'm so glad it's finally made it there.

Pretty much how I feel about this movie. It's......okay. while I am SLIGHTLY....and I say SLIGHTLY into broadway. (I more just like it than I'm into it.) This film feels more like a broadway picture than a film inspired by broadway. And for that. It did okay. While I am a straight man who likes broadway and have very little interest in costume or design. I appreciate this just because it did put out a few catchy songs and Christian Bale did give a decent performance. As good as a smarmy wise ass new yorker child can be at least.
