It was already explained by Hamas terrorists captured. Because Israel has to warn civilians where they will attack so they can leave the area, the terrorists had ample time to move away and hide between civilians. They regroup when the IDF moved out of that area. They, however, did not expect the surprise return of the IDF at the Shifa hospital where the terrorists operated from after regrouping. It's pretty logical to figure out. Use your grey matter between your ears and stop being a hamas sheeple.

They are not wearing uniforms for the most part how would anyone know who is a Hamas operative and who is not? Not wearing uniforms is allowed under war law btw. As is fighting against an oppressor. Terrorists are people performing acts of violence against civilians in order to instill fear, in order to achieve a political goal. By that defnition, many but not all Hamas operatives are terrorists (esp. the 7 okt. perpetrators) but so are many of the IDF who are in effect complicit in collective punishment by destroying almost all buildings in Gaza, and killing and maiming tens of thousands of civilians, so they will never dare to rise up against Israel again. That will not work of course. After this, if Gazans are somehow allowed to rebuild and live again, there will hundreds of thousands of children who saw their loved ones die and will grow up hating Israel. It is only logical and only human. From the Israeli side, it is exactly the same. Both sides have reasons to hate the other, and are reinforced in their hate by their surroundings. Every death and every lost limb is a seed for the new conflict after this.

Gaza Ministry of Health has been operating under the jurisdiction of the territories of the terrorist organization Hamas since 2007, and they are just a front for Hamas. The casualty figures provided by the Gaza Health ministry are the sole official source of data on Palestinian casualties in Gaza and they do not distinguish the difference between terrorists, civilians or natural death. The death toll cannot be taken "at face value”.

The Hamas numbers seem believable given the population density of Gaza. I mean the US Army Air Corps killed 100,000 Japanese civilians in two days in Tokyo in a scenario which was truly "indiscriminate" bombing. The 30,000 figure over several months seems reasonable for such a dense area where people can only evacuate to nearby locations. Even if Hamas is not fudging the numbers (surely they are) the death total indicates due diligence in preventing excessive civilian deaths.

Wtf! How are all the comments on board? The article chose 12 out of 150+ days, why did they select these days? Was it random or is there a specific reason? If you look hard enough at any long random sequence, you can see local patterns. Just a quick Google search for the data ans looking at it shows it is not linear as presented. 2nd, the 12 says they draw are not that linear. If you have the right scale and large bins, things look more linear than they are. Numbers each day range from 200-340. 3rd, even if the data is not random, that doesn't mean that it is fabricated. There are many hypothesis to test first.

Not surprising that the numbers would be approximations. Would have to dig further into the numbers to see the actual trends and correlations. "Proven" is a poor choice of wording. The professor seemed more careful with his words in the interview, but you can't prove anything with statistics: you can only provide evidence. The extent to which the evidence supports a position can be overwhelming, but it is never proof.

People can be mistaken, have insufficient information, or be deceitful or otherwise motivated to believe one way or the other. Again, without looking into it further, we should be hesitant to accept what people say as completely factual. We should also be hesitant to ascribe motivation for people we do not know well, although it is worth recognizing potential reasons why they may be at least partly wrong.

CNN - The United Nations on Monday clarified that the overall number of fatalities in Gaza tallied by the Ministry of Health in Gaza remains unchanged, at more than 35,000, since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas on October 7. The update was to clarify that the number that the UN gave was about the identified bodies, not the total death count, which they still accept as 35000. The article continues by saying that the identification process for many of the deceased is still ongoing. Good that they clarified. However, this in no way supports or disputes the professor's claim that the trend is too smooth. You would have to study the day-to-day reports to do this. While there will be a correlation between conflict dates and deaths, the death count will likely have a wider distribution since bodies are often uncovered in the days after conflict. We see footage of people searching for injured and dead people through rubble, and it's understandable that people may be hesitant to search through an area that is currently under attack. I would have to see whether the professor accounted for the dynamics of this in his modelling, and whether he has investigated with doctors and other hospital staff in the area about whether the numbers seem to align with the trends data he has studied. No model is perfect, but the more factors we can accurately model, the better we can draw conclusions about the data and any discrepancies. We do the same thing for financial fraud. The numbers are studied to see whether they fit real financial data trends, or whether they seem to deviate significantly from them. That in itself may not be enough to confirm fraud, but it can suggest an increased chance. Further investigation can improve the confidence, or may explain discrepancies in a way that had not previously been explained through a basic model.

Wouldn’t that mean that the lack of variation in the casualty count could simply be to do with a bottleneck on how many bodies they can recover/identify a day?

They've got the dog tags so it's probably much higher because many will still be under the rubble. We know that the 7 Oct numbers were inflated because the numbers went from 1400 to 1156 due to the fact that many of the bodies were so badly burnt that they couldn't distinguish between Israelis and Gazans. And the reason for that was the damage was more consistent with heavy IDF weapons and not Hamas light arms.

Knowing that 2.3 million people are crammed into 140 sq. miles of Gaza strip, all I have to do is look at the level of destruction to know that the death rate is disproportionally high and that the level of suffering is beyond forgiveness. Gaza death toll does not include those many thousands buried in the rubble, most of them women and children as Hamas would naturally be underground in their tunnels...a fact the IDF would be well aware of. Knowing that Israel has shut off all services and all aid and destroyed all the civilian infrastructure violating every international law against war crimes and crimes against humanity makes it abundantly clear even to a fool that genocide by starvation and disease is the ultimate goal. And Israeli reporters in Israel are also arrested, beaten and worse if they do not write what the Israeli government wants.
