How ACK Fishing Team member Chris Castro handles the surf when offshore kayak fishing. He has spent countless hours in the surf, and he enjoys sharing things he's learned along the way. As promised, this is part 2 into how he handles the surf, this time coming back in.

Remember that each territory faces different challenges, with that being said, this is in reference to obstacles he faces on the Texas coast. Always remember to rig and leash appropriately, wear a PFD at all times, a helmet for added protection, and under supervision.

Great surf entry and exit tips Chris! I have a Trident Ultra 4.3, which is a 14ft version of your Trident 15, and I'm still avoiding surf in Hawaii larger than 3ft. I know the Trident's bow and rocker can slice through chop, so I guess I just have to practice my braces in smaller surf to gain confidence for bigger days.

@@NextLevelFishingTV Yup, the Ultra series with the big center hatch that could be cut out to access the hull, and extra large rear tankwell, was really suited for offshore fishing.

Great Video! I have a question. I just bought a perception Outlaw and would like your opinion on weather or not it would be safe to do a surf launch from La Jolla.

Edgar Hall hmmmm I don’t really know much about La Jolla conditions which could dictate a lot. Conditions aside and judging by the perception outlaw design, you’re going to have issues punching through large surf and maintaining control with forward entry. If it’s a calm lake day with zero surf and you are not battling current you should be okay... best advice would be to dig around some local knowledge. Figure out what size of surf and what sort of current you are or could possibly be dealing with. Current is a big one brother, you don’t wanna be taken out to sea or ripped so far down current you don’t have the speed or capabilities to come back. Do as much homework as you can. Hmm, wish I knew more about diving. If you carry equipment you may want to consider the trident. Rear tank well caters to divers better plus the internal center console might be something you find useful. Viking 400 is a great kayak, just not many options for storage other than the chill pod and center pod. Try them both though, great kayaks that’s for sure. PS the trident 15 is a diving kayak machine. Got a few friends in Hawaii that specifically use the 15 for that reason.

I have a feel free moken 12.5 and i am wondering if this yak is good to go offshore? Is this yak made for offshore or just for the bay?

Sam Torres the moken can handle calm offshore conditions but you’ll be working a lot harder then some of the other offshore kayaks designed for the open water. It’s stable and built more for the bay, but if you pick a window with 1ft surf and or swells, you’ll be fine. Pay attention to current and drift speeds, you don’t wanna end up in Cuba 😳
