38-year-old eagles fan here. I've seen them from Montana onwards. There are many greats in this league, but the conversation about throwing motion starts and ends with this: Dan Constantine Marino. NFL Network named him as a top 10 MOBILE quarterback. If you know anything about Dan Marino, he was a statue. Go watch the clip. He made the list because his throwing motion was so incredible, it basically removed the need for mobility. It should be easily found on KZbin. Defenders like Reggie White would jump up celebrating a sack, only to realize that the nearly immobil Marino had somehow thrown the ball in under 2 seconds, perfectly on target, and at a higher velocity than had ever been seen. When asked how many touchdowns Dan Marino would throw in the modern NFL, Montana said Marino would throw 60 in his sleep.

Rogers talking about what he learned from Favre and the strong base and weight transfer is really basic jump shot mechanics in basketball. Stronger legs give a strong base, that adds range. @@johhnyytwotime510 too much wasted motion in his movement. Too much rotator cuff use to make up for it. Thats why he has trouble holding his arm above the shoulder and throwing a football only a few years after retirement. If youre throwing a ball 70 yards with minimal effort and not damaging your shoulder in the process, you have the superior throwing mechanics. Thats objective. Tom House looked at very specific factors of kinematic sequencing that dont always translate in the real world. Brees arm wasnt that strong, he didnt have the quickest release in the NFL and he couldnt make throws very well off platform like Rodgers, Mahomes, Allen(rotational throwers). Tom House said Brees mechanics were best because Brees was similar to a pitcher, that throws a ball down a mound in a straight line with no one in the way.

@@Ann-yo5sb you are 100 percent correct. Thats why they only focus on Rodgers in the beginning and not much after, they dont really talk about Mahomes at all. Favre had the best arm in NFL history, Rodgers even admitted Favre taught him how to throw and they didnt even talk to him?!?!

They even shyd away from Rodgers as an example mid way, didt talk about Favre or Mahomes. Marino either. Maybe those guys do things that most QBs cant and if you tried to teach those things to most QBs they wouldnt be able to do it. Drew Brees mechanics are easiest to replicate for most probably so they focused on him in the end. I have to disagree. Brees has almost no dissassociation and his weight is up, not rotating through(how the body is designed to move) he also has his weight so far forward his shoulders are ahead of everything on release. This forces you to make up for lost power using your rotator cuff. Just stand holding the positiom hes in just before release and throw a ball, all shoulder. He has shoulder problems now because of it. I think he was just naturally accurate and his success didnt have to do with his mechanics.

@@Viking_367 How on Earth is Brees' motion the best? It puts too much strain on the rotator cuff. Even his windup is all external rotation. It's gruesome to watch and it destroyed his shoulder for life. He can't throw a football anymore. Meanwhile Favre, Marino, Rodgers, Elway, and Moon could still throw the ball with quickness, power, and accuracy into their late 30s and 40s. There's footage of a retired 45 year old John Elway at a QB challenge throwing the ball perfectly with accuracy. Even Boomer Esiason was shocked, saying "this guy can still play!" Meanwhile Brees' arm is shot and he can't do a QB challenge even in his dreams. This video should've strictly talked about the above five guys because those are the best pure passers ever.

@@Yeomannn I agree. The beginning was amazing as they focused on guys we would want QBs of the future to emmulate. I was disappointed with the ending focusing on a guy that doesnt do any of the "evolved" stuff the video is supposed to be focusing on.

@@Viking_367 Brees' lower half is almost completely dead when he throws the ball. It's the throwing equivalent of a batter using only his upper body to hit the ball instead of his whole body. His shoulder is doing the majority of the work. Joe Montana was the same, an "over the top" thrower and guess what? He had to undergo multiple surgeries on his elbow and shoulder throughout his career. By 1991 his elbow and shoulder were practically destroyed. He played in 1993 and 1994 but if you watch the footage you'll notice that he could barely throw the ball 40 yards. That lack of arm strength really came back to haunt him in the playoffs those two years. He was playing on borrowed time. He's since had a full shoulder replacement.

I play golf, and it was mentioned a couple of times, and yeah, there are a lot of similarities to golf. In golf, the "disassociation" is called the coil (which was also sort of mentioned too) and the strange thing is, there is no disassociation, it's a concerted movement. The movement always starts with the backswing to find the rear position, the start of the coil. Same as throwing. Then from the ground up, uncoiling the coil built up by the backswing/ rear positioning, and initiated by the hips. The exact same goes with throwing. What Josh Allen had was what golfers call arm swinging. It's what old people usually have to do because of the loss of flexibility in the torso. And yeah, it has no power and it can even hurt you over time. My grandfather loved golf, but had to stop playing because his arm swinging was killing his arthritis stricken shoulders.

The rules changes are really the story. It's impossible to stop a good passing attack now. Decades ago a 50% completion rate was considered excellent. Now it's terrible. But most of the more recent rules changes are about mitigating injury. CTE will eventually end tackle football. No rules or equipment can prevent it. The Pro Bowl is a preview.

Garrett interviewed with Dan Patrick this week and said they have dozens of hours of footage that they had trouble paring down for this video. I’m hopeful they can put out more like this one with that material.
