Perpetual Testing (301)
“Overshoot”
By evelyncarnate (AKA Jofish)
Portal 2 Community Maps & Mods
Beautiful map with a puzzle that turned out to be more skill based than I was expecting.
Suffice to say …I overshot my welcome.
Also, you probably noticed some changes to your regularly scheduled Perpetual Testing.
I’d really appreciate feedback on the changes :)

Wow, this one has been in the works for a while. I swear I saw unfinished images of this chamber floating around Thinking with Portals like a year ago. edit: Not numbering videos anymore makes sense because the numbers clutter up the thumbnails. With this change have you considered importing standalone hammer maps into the monday schedule? Since theres not really any differentiation between numbered episodes and special episodes now. It means you wouldn't have to worry about making more than one video a week.

just as you describe is basically the whole reason behind dropping the numbers thing, hopefully means i can just do more videos of more maps more often :D

oh dear 😅maybe i should have clarified in my description that it's an easy/medium logic puzzle but a tremendously difficult and frustrating ninja execution challenge. you're not the only one i've seen make that same assumption though, so i really wish i'd done more to make it clear with the layout that it's not the intended solution. oh well, you did a really good job figuring out the proper catch at the end, so perhaps it balances out

Hi sorry for taking so long to reply to you and thank you for making and sharing another beautiful map, and yeah this is another one where i have realised from the comments that i took the most awkward approach possible to trying to solve it. I'm guessing now that i should of actually set things up so that i could have had the cube "bobbing" between portals over on the middle section coming out of the floor panels, then i could of faith plated over there and gotten on the button without having to worry about timing at all. thanks again, and again sorry for the really late reply and of course thank you for watching!

Played this map a few days ago and was shocked you hadn't played it yet! Jofish/evelyncarnate makes the most beautiful maps and if Portal 3 looked even a tiny bit as good as this I would be so happy.

Totally agree, ever map of theirs i have seen has been seriously impressive, they always look amazing and have really good enjoyable puzzles in them too. If there ever was going to be a Portal3 then valve needs to take note of the quality and skill of some of the community creators out there! Thank you for watching and sorry for the late reply!

Love the little fella giving your dive points. Also loved how "vastness" was the word of the day lol. Can't believe you missed the joke at 10:22. Big "noooooo" at 16:05. "Pretty maps do hate me" you okay bro? You projecting something from real life? Take care man. I was only about to think that you managed to solve this single chance with no deaths and then you had to reset for quick save lolol. GG as usual. Love the map design and the "vastness" of it. Keep these videos coming :)

0:18 - Don't look at me, I've been the same "HugoBDesigner" for well over 10 years :P 1:47 - And vast! 2:31 - Good puzzle design tip of the day: exploring the puzzle should _never_ be a step backward into solving the puzzle. Having the player look around and understand the layout should be _at worst_ something that doesn't give the player any progress and _at best_ something that actively moves the player further into solving the chamber ;) 4:01 - Vastness 6:42 - Chell's immense girth 8:23 - Wanna see a 10/10 dive? kzbin.info/www/bejne/laKcp5-ZepKjqqc 8:35 - Why would you ever want to put the cube on the button??? 😏😏😏 9:26 - That should've been your first hint that this is probably _not_ the solution :P 10:19 - _That's what she said_ 11:34 - Ironically, it's because mappers and modders don't have direct access to the player's walk speed. So unless we use plugins, then we can't make the player run 😔 13:35 - I can think of at least two ways of making this easier on yourself 14:27 - Hahahahah, this is absolutely hilarious! I wonder if this was done on purpose, I'd love it if it was 15:51 - Nearly 16 minutes later, and you executed the most difficult solution of the three I could think of :P 15:58 - HAHAHAHAHAHAH I stand corrected, this is the best thing ever! 21:08 - Or you could, ya know, just put the orange on the angled panel and walk through ;) Fantastic video as per usual! Though you definitely did overcomplicate it ever so slightly, as is tradition :P

0:18 "HugoBDesigner" sounds good and is easy to remember and say though, but yeah so many people in the portal community seem to change usernames near weekly. 1:47 definitely became the overused word of the day :) 2:31 agreed and having a good look around the chamber before even starting is always my preferred way. 4:01 a thesaurus is on back order :) 6:42 got her girth wedged in some debris. 8:23 ....glad to see i'm not the only one to make embarrassing mistakes from time to time :D 8:35 but the years of training have conditioned me into thinking if there's a button, it must need a cube lol 9:26 yeah once again i picked and stubbornly stuck with the worst way to try and solve this one. 10:19 can't believe i didn't go anywhere with that. 11:34 that makes sense, i guess someone would of, if they could of by now. it would really wreck a lot of puzzle mechanics though. 13:35 yeah me too ....now lol 14:27 wouldn't be surprised if there was an intentional "tiny invisible wall" there, should of seen that as another hint this was the wrong way. 15:51 i mean, i usually do, even when wrong :D 15:58 punished by the game for doing it wrong 21:08 yeah i know ....now lol As always, thank you so much for watching and for the comments, and as always sorry for the very late reply, i'm trying to catch up again today so there will likely be more :D much love!

Here’s some quicksave-related tips and things you should set up to help with execution-based maps: Use quicksaves a lot, and have the quicksave key bound to something easily reachable. I use Q as it’s right next to WASD (and because Q for quicksave). Because of having easy access to quicksaves, it can be easy to accidentally save in a bad place. Remember that you can do “load quick01” in the console to load the 2nd most recent save. By doing “save (insert save name here)” in the console, you can make a permanent save that you can always load back to with “load (insert save name here)”. Make sure to have SAR installed and do “sar_fast_load_preset full” in the console to reduce loading times (interesting fact, Portal 2 by default has artificially slowed loading screens for some weird reason).

hey sorry for the very late reply and thanks for the tips, i have a love hate relationship with quick saves, i used to actually have a safe imposed rule with these videos that i wouldn't use it at all, but as maps got bigger and more complicated, and i couldn't always rely on the creators to have added save points i had to drop it, so i use it now but sparingly and paranoid of making a bad one :) I did know about the save name command, i used when i made the multiple videos on the "Ball Pit" map as it would of taken way to long for me in one go :D Thanks again for the tips and of course for watching too!

Yeah i have a really bad habit of overcomplicating puzzles it seems, the other option would of been to have the cube juggle through portals in the floor panels and then take the faith plate over to the button, then you'd have as much time as you want to move the portals to launch the cube :D Thank you for watching!

No episode number? Is that a new intentional thing? Very cool looking chamber, the "vastenss", as you say, definitely makes it feel large, even though the footprint of the actual puzzle is quite small. Crazy timing on that one, if that was the intended solution. Wondering if there was another way to do that without such tight timing.
@ngeruma
@ngeruma 10 ай бұрын
I've decided to ditch the episode number thing, it didn't really seem like there was any point in counting anymore and i want to do much simpler cleaner thumbnails now too. evelyncarnate always does and incredible job with the aesthetic, really makes the player feel tiny and insignificant in Aperture. Also, i've seen from comments i took the most awkward solution possible for this one, if i'd had the cube juggling in and out of the floor panels i could of faith plated over to that button and taken as much time as needed. ...typical :) As always, thank you!
