Mario Lemieux 66# comeback is the greatest ice hockey comeback in history. Been forced to retire in 1997 for health reasons related to his cancer treatment and heavy back problems and then been away from all professional hockey for 3 years. No one believed he could come back. And then in 2001 he did just that and played like he was never gone, making 76 pts in just 43 games!. And in 2003 he had the highest points per game percentage of all top players and was close to win the scoring title, but again, his bad back made him miss-out a lot of games that seasons, but still at just 67 played games, he scored 91 pts and with a weak Penguins team to add.

I thought he retired in 97 in protest over the clutching and grabbing style as opposed to his injuries.
@WarioSaysSo2 жыл бұрын
@@wiseguy3675 Well it could be a part of it, but by his own words, he was in to bad condition at the time to continue play on. He loved the sport more then anything else beside his family, but his health said no.
@MMGJ102 жыл бұрын
@@wiseguy3675 That was a huge part of it from what I remember. It was a combo of playing in a league that was letting star players get mugged on every shift, plus his career of injuries and illness. I think i remember him saying he didn't think he could perform at his standards, and wanted to retire. He did make a point that a large part of it was because of what the "garage league" was letting happen though. It was definitely a statement for him to retire.
@MMGJ102 жыл бұрын
@@WarioSaysSo Regardless of exactly why he retired, it was an AMAZING comeback. To come back at age 35, after not playing in 3 years and 9 months, into a "lower scoring league with better goalies" as everyone always points out, after ALL of his back issues/ injuries/surgeries and a bone infection in his back that could've crippled him, plus cancer..he came back without a training camp, part way into the year and was DOMINANT .. AGAIN. Crazy. Even look at Crosby coming back this year at 34, after wrist surgery then covid knocked him out of a few games, and it took him awhile to hit his stride again. Lemieux had 3 points his first game back and kept rolling. Lol That was Lemieux though. He was just something else.

Got to see Fleury post NHL when he played for the Belfast giants in the British leagues. He was consistently the best player on the ice. (Admittedly against a much lower class of player. The British leagues were on a par with the ECHL back then) and was a stop off for many former NHL players.
