A shocking new report is warning that serious harm in NHS maternity care will become normalised if action isn't taken.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission went into 131 maternity units in England. They found that two-thirds - 65% - were not safe for women to give birth in, declaring that 47% required improvement, and 18% were inadequate.

My son was 50 last year and i landed up with PTSD after having him in hospital. My womb ripped, yes ripped out, and my back passage cut instead of an episiotomy!!! What good is an apology when you are injured, or lost a child? I have had problems in my healthbever since. NHS hasnt changed. It just continued to get worse. !!!!!!

My first pregnancy, I was told I had choices but never actually made to feel like I was able to make those choices. A ton of coercive language used by medical staff to make decisions - And ultimately ended up with birth trauma that I needed to seek therapy for. My second pregnancy I opted to home birth as I never wanted to see the inside of a maternity unit again. And so had a single wonderful midwife throughout my entire pregnancy. Only right towards the end I had to abruptly move houses and out of the borough and so ended up having to change plans. I then chose a birthing centre. I went into the hospital at 40 weeks exactly for a check up and suddenly all the medical staff were pressuring me into getting an induction. I refused which they were not happy about but again made to feel silly about my decision. The registra started using coercive language talking about still birth. Mentioning how even if the percentage was less that 1%, I wouldn't want to be that 1%. I didn't give into the pressure however and had a healthy plump baby at 42 weeks with no complications whatsoever. By the time it was time for my third I was aware of what they were going to throw at me. I finally went in for a hospital birth 3 days before my due date. They were understaffed severely. I saw one midwife right at the beginning when put into a room and then right at the end as I was pushing. My husband was basically my midwife. After I had given birth I said I wanted to deliver my placenta naturally. The midwife said 'don't make this more difficult for me please' and proceeded to give me the injection! I was shocked. Stupidly I felt sorry for her as she was under severe pressure due to short staff and the high number of births that day. - In hindsight I should have put in a complaint. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE! 3 Births from 2018 onwards and not one full complete positive experience!

I ended up in theatre with an emergency c-section because I was passing out from exhaustion, I wasn't allowed to eat due to the general anesthetic risk I posed and I have scoliosis which makes spinal blocks nearly impossible to put in me. 0/10 would not do it again. I gave birth to my first child in hospital in 1963 the NHS had only been around 15 years then and I was well looked after, my next three children I had at home a really good experience got to know my midwife, this was 1965 1966 and 1968 my fourth child I had in hospital 1973 it was the time of power cuts because of strikes, I went into hospital at about 1.00am and was given drugs to stop my contractions as the maternity unit was on emergency power I had a very uncomfortable few hours before I was allowed to give birth this was not really the hospitals fault, but it seems to me that in the early days of the NHS we were looked after a lot better than today, with all the super duper equipment (which half the nurses don't know how to use) from my own experience in 2019, it is not just about money, it is the hospital staffs attitude towards you that needs to change, so many nurses now go from university onto the wards no experience with patients, as in the old days they learnt on the wards as well a going to class's people are not text book we are all different and need to be treated as individuals, and a lot of nurses just don't give a damn about you.

Some things just seem obvious! I don't ever want to see another midwife with fake nails for example! I had one with huge square things who wanted to give me an internal while I was in labour! Never mind the injury she could do..how can you get them clean underneath! Or the a&e nurse I had a few weeks ago in cycling shorts and the most enourmous dreadlocks piled up on her head but falling down. What happened to nurses being smart, neat and clean? I know everyone wants something that can be tumble dried, but in the old days before we had dishwashers and microwaves we managed to iron our uniform and look smart and competent, never mind clean!

Every time (in my life) that the Tories have lost power, the NHS has been left in a terrible state. Funding has been cut/diverted, the growing encroachment of private care providers (aka Tory donors), staff are demoralised (therefor dysfunctional). Many many issues. Here's the deal: the Tories are ideologically opposed to any state/national provision (health care, education etc etc). Sadly Wes Streeting is cut from the same mould, look at his backers, the people he talks to... Brits should take a long hard look at US healthcare, because our inept politicians are trying to import that humanitarian disaster to the UK, they can afford the health insurance bills, but ask yourself: can you? Lobby your MP if you want change, let them know what you think they should be doing.

NHS is institutionally incapable of making itself function efficiently and compassionately - a shakeup is beyond its powers, and more money is a sticking plaster. Then there's trusted staff who interfere with babies (you know who I mean) - systemic failures such as this are never properly addressed - those who could prevent these tragedies are never held accountable.

She kept saying it was being covered up because the majority of nurses responsible are all foreign There is one doctor who has failed the English test 9 times but is still being allowed to practice. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5uQn3Wch96aaa8

Absolutely, research shows women of colour are disproportionally affected by poor maternal care. And those who can afford private care can obviously choose high quality private maternity services, often inside NHS hospitals (such as a top floor private ward) practically offering 1:1 care. Not to mention the option to employ additional private midwives and doula. Complete 2 tiers system.

I’m now 20weeks and still haven’t seen my midwife. 30/F first time mum in Norfolk. My GP doesn’t deal with anything pregnancy related as they are understaffed. I can't believe that your GP is legally allowed to refuse to 'do anything to do with pregnancy '! It's a condition that can affect up to half the population! Get on Google and find who to speak to in your local health authority about this. You can't be left waiting for an emergency to justify a trip to a&e. But you can get your own blood pressure monitor cheaply. That's a major indicator of any common problems in pregnancy, likewise urine sticks..in pregnancy they look for maternal diabetes. If you're really flush, you can actually employ a private midwife! Or a doula, who's a professional birthing partner, who can advocate for you in the birth and befriend you before. But really... don't worry about it. Most problems arise from the same roots as most health problems. So long as you eat real, nutritious food ( anything you can theoretically make from scratch in your kitchen) and drink,no junk, some gentle exercise and keep calm ❤️ Norfolk is a beautiful county, it's a beautiful time of year and you're carrying your first child 🐣 get out with your baby and have some long country walks and enjoy it all. This is a magical time in your life and in years to come you will tell your child about when they were in your tummy 🥰 So enjoy it! Sing and talk to your baby,if you're happy they're happy and soon they will recognise your voice. Surround yourself with positive people and listen to the old ladies. Enjoy and go well ❤️

We need more people having children and yet we can’t look after the women who are giving birth. During my pregnancy, I did get decent care during the pregnancy but once the contractions started…. Let’s just say my circumstances became items on a checklist. I had 5 days of painful contractions, so painful that the contractions would fall in line with expectations and then immediately fall out. Within 5 days, we visit A&E 3x - the first 2x I wasn’t dilated enough. By day 5 I was finally 5cm dilated but then it went down to 3cm. My waters broke whilst I was in the Labour room but they clearly broke from the top because it didn’t all come out at once. The midwives didn’t believe us at all when we told them, as they could still see waters inside. The details are blurry at this point, but it was only once I finally got the epidural (that was a fight to qualify for this), that Labour could actually start progressing and it did rather quickly. I spent most of the day in the Labour room and by the time my daughter was born, her face was blue and her head was misshapen. I had an extended episiotomy and yet I was expected to breastfeed sitting down - which was notably painful. My discomfort made it harder for her to get comfortable and to latch on. But once again rules rules rules, i had to breastfeed sitting in a chair - I absolutely was not allowed to breastfeed laying down 🙈 We had to stay for a further 1.5 days to make sure my daughter and I were healthy enough to leave but I honestly couldn't leave soon enough. We saw a midwife the next day and she gave (and patiently showed us) guidelines on how to safely breastfeed laying down in the bed. The midwives out-of-hospital were significantly more patient and treated us as individuals, addressing our individual needs. While we did have a few good and kind midwives in the hospital, we also had a few impatient midwives who clearly really tired and worn down.

When my nephew was born, Im 35 now but at the time I was a 15 year old kid. When I walked in the room to meet my nephew, my mum picked him up first and began talking to my nan, in the time it took for that to happen like 2 mins I had already decided in my head that the noise my nephew was making wasnt normal and told my mum, she then held him up to the light so she could see his chest moving and he was actually struggling SO hard to breathe , that when we called for help he was checked and rushed to intensive care straight away where he remained for 2 weeks! The MOST DISGUSTING part of this story is that after he was rushed off, my sister, (his mum) told us that she had mentioned it a few HOURS earlier and the nurse came in and said and I quote "yes thats a funny little noise hes making 😅" and she walked off laughing. Without any reassurance to my sister who was a new mum and had no experience with new borns. The birth itself was absolutely horrendous ans probaby what caused his breathing issues, she wasnt able to push properly throigh the pain so they coerced her into having an epidural which the failed to administer 4 times then left her for a long time to the point he had come all the way down ready to come out but she didnt know becaue she could feel anything ams they werent monitering the situation efficiently, they eventually had to use a ventouse! He's a healthy 21 year old now, so that's how long I KNOW it's been like this. Also, my best friend had a VERY similar birthing experience in a different hospital. And this is years later. I hear stories all the time of friends of friends having horrendous experiences. Royal free in London.

It was my first pregnancy I was young never heard of hyperemesis and I got a blood clot from dehydration. If I had known now and had another child I would definitely push for in hospital care with iv hydration drips. Can you believe! One of the medical staff told me I could abort the child if I can't take the pregnancy instead of offering me all other services like iv drips and proper care. Also the midwife laughed at me when I said my water has broken in an induced labour because she said it doesn't break that quick and wouldn't attend to me then my sister kicked up a fuss and she checked and said oh yeh your right and didn't even apologise I felt so vulnerable and degraded. I feel it was because of my race I was treated like this but I don't hold it to heart because my other midwife post labour was a Godsend. I will never forget her kindness.

NHS NEEDS CHANGED ENTIRELY! England Scotland the entire NHS Enough is enough not just with maternity services but children’s and adults the entire service needs changed. The NHS were accountable for putting my baby’s life on the line countless of times including stealing her oxygen mask away oh not to mention leaving babies to almost fall out of their cots it’s a list of incompetence acts. People too scared to say anything and the second you do they gang up against you they have become a disgrace !

Nothing shocking to me hearing about how bad the NHS is, that's completely what I expect from both the NHS and our government, both are redundant and need completely disbanding and rebuilding

Don’t think nhs trust treatment towards mothers and babies is any difference to Lucy Letby. I’d say they are both equivalent of the same crime here

Haven’t spent time in a maternity hospital for 14 years. Last time I was there 2/3rds of the expectant mums were African Muslims.

This is all because there is TOO many people in the country to cope with !!! So why are we not adressing this? You people just stand back and let it happen ! Noone seems to say this

No, it's because successive governments have been under funding the NHS, so the service can be degraded enough that people will call for private healthcare. There is also the demographic pressure of a constantly growing cohort of ageing people who use the NHS way more than any other group.

There isnt too many people in the country, it's due to lack of funding from the previous government

So you think too many people are giving birth? The birth rates are well below replacement rate. They can't even deal with that?

Correct , and basically the infrastructure of the UK, especially the NHS is not currently capable of handling the dramatic increase in population that has occured over the last 20 years , unfortunately more funding won't help as the current administration will waste it so the only realistic alternative is for it to be sold and become a private company , signalling the end of free healthcare in the UK, sad but necessary. Mass uncontrolled immigration is the absolute route cause of most the UK's problems but that's not politically correct to say so

This is what happens when you employ foreign nurses and Dr's who are not up to par. Several could not speak a word of English, I discharged myself 7 hours after I gave birth. Hubby looked after me much better than the hospital did.

We train nurses and doctors whose terms and conditions are so below par that they are taking themselves off to other parts of the Anglosphere asap for a better life, while we get those trained in….. africa. Make it make sense!
