Thank you for the video,I was in Nicaragua in may and I had a wonderful time,I am British and have been married to a Thai for 37 years,I am currently living in Thailand,I have travel insurance at the moment,I am 59 in February and I do worry when I get older that I will not be able to afford health/travel insurance, it’s good to know that Nicaragua is a option for somewhere to spend my winters, so far the the only countries in know that a Britisher can visit and in an emergency get free care is the EU Australia New Zealand Brazil and Nicaragua,Nicaraguan people should be very proud of this fact,it makes me want to visit your beautiful country even more, merry Christmas and a happy new year, keep up the good work

I can confirm what Enrique says about doctors being more humanistic in Nicaragua. Maybe not if your going to the free hospital; but every time I've gone to a clinic where I pay (usually like $3-$20 dollars for basic bloodwork and physicals and whatnot) I've always been treated very well and the doctor has spent time with me and asked me way more questions than in the USA

As expats we pay out of pocket and save a little monthly for care, rather than use that money for insurance. Meds are cheap. For anything big we would go to the military hospital in Managua OR, fly to Medellin ! Great video !

Great interview without all the nonsense. Hard to find an info video like this anymore. In the future, maybe address the issue of what is available OTC in Nicaragua versus the US. I remember traveling to Ecuador and my brother bought medications that were prescription only (in the US) right over the counter at a neighborhood farmacia.

Great video! Thank you! In reference to travel insurance, what are the most reputable ones to use for those residing in the US and visiting Nicaragua?

Awesome video! Just some food for thought; most Nicaraguans do not have insurance. Having insurance is much more necessary in the USA because of the insane cost of healthcare. However, in Nicaragua, healthcare is relatively cheap, so having insurance is nowhere near as necessary. Meanwhile, here in Nicaragua, private healthcare is typically so cheap that you do not even need health insurance like in the United States. For example, lets say you want some dental work... in Managua, you can get a tooth pulled for $20, a cleaning for $20, a filling for $20, all in one dental appointment without any insurance for just $60. Good luck finding a $60 dentist in the USA without insurance. Dont get me wrong; insurance definitely exists in Nicaragua. But talking about it as if people actually use it, that is a bit misleading. Most Nicaraguans do not have any insurance, they go to the designated hospital for their area and receive healthcare for free after waiting a long time and being around a bunch of people. The quality of the free healthcare is lower. Then there is the employed Nicaraguans who pay taxes on their income. This represents a smaller group of Nicaraguan people compared to the USA. Believe it or not, most Nicaraguans do not pay taxes, even when they are supposed to. Nicaraguans in general HATE taxes and I've met plenty of Nicaraguan locals who have never paid a penny of tax in their life, even though they are supposed too. So, these Nicaraguans who have jobs and actually pay their taxes; they get a form of insurance that allows them to go to the Military hospital. (Basically, they get access to the private healthcare that other Nicaraguans would have to pay to get) The access to the higher quality healthcare is an incentive to get Nicaraguans to pay their taxes more often. So it functions similar to health insurance. But even so, its not the same as having health insurance in the USA. The main benefit to having healthcare in Nicaragua is when you need medical assistance for an unusual condition, or you are frequently flying to another country to receive healthcare

Most of my Nicaraguan friends prefer to go to Leon for basic healthcare; and Managua for any kind of advanced healthcare; I don't know why but they say that the doctors there are more trustworthy than the doctors in Managua

Where is the best place to purchase travel insurance? The US, or Nicaragua? Great video! Gracias

I recommend in the US. This way you can shop around before you travel.
