About 15 years ago, a gold guy from the Pittsburgh Pa area, who I think was a member of some gold enthusiast club, was interviewed by either the PGH Post Gazette of Tribune Review ( Greensburg, PA) regarding the gold prospecting hobby. He related, like you, the Pa had gold due to glacial movement. The guy stated that gold could be found in the Allegheny River and it's tributaries to the North. So, being the inquisitive type, I went out to a sand pile I had for block work. I didn't have a real gold pan of course, so I used the wife's King Arthur (her mom's antique one mind you............not a smart move as I would later discover) and panned out about a 1/4 cup at a time. After about 4 hours of panning through about two #10 cans of sand, I ended up with two small flakes of gold confirmed by an elderly local jeweler. I surrendered them to the wife since I used...........her mom's antique pan.

@Klesh> as fellow prospector and pa resident down here in somerset, pa you are absolutely correct most people dont realize the amount of gold we have in our state saying there is only coal here lol. One thing i will tell you as a bit of advice , is to take hike this time of year and late fall and take pictures of what creeks you are interested in . watching how the ice setups as a key onto how the water flows.let alone when it rains ; both things will give you a key onto how the gold flows and as well as how the water might move the gold . :)

I had a high school science teacher who used to bury a small box in our local creek in southeastern pennsylvania. Every year he would harvest the box and get about an ounce of gold. He told us the creek (I won't say it) but not where he put his box. Interesting man

I live in Bucks County and there are tons of garnets in the schist in the creeks here. The largest I’ve found so far is probably the size of a small grape still has all the flat sides of the crystal intact it really is beautiful and a very deep red. It’s fun just screening the gravel beds looking for them or just grabbing the raw schist and smashing it looking for them.

So, way back, glacier covered a lot of land, the great lakes frozen over,, gold in pa creeks rivers and streams made it a long long way down from Canada, glacier till is all the rocks and dirt and earth draged along with the glaciers,, some places can be found the drag marks,, but it's flour gold because it's been ground down, long time ago,, up in Canada several rivers still have new gold coming fro. The mountains, and next ice age, who knows maybe we will have more than flour gold in PA,, 😂😂👍 but hey considering how far it came, how long it's been there,, it's co it can still be found,, a whole lot made its way into the bay and now part of the oceans waters,, will never get rich from gold in pa, but it's fun to find👍👍👍

Gold miners from Sunbury put on as demonstration for us and Fish Commission on the Loyalsock and they did find a couple grains of gold near the Green Bridge in Montoursville . They claim people get flakes of gold in waterway near the Montour preserve. Hawk run Mining office claims a guy came in to their office with a baby food jar of gold flour. Locals from New Albany Boro claim they get gold nuggets the size of pencil erasers but no one ever showed us any. If you intend to try getting gold from HQ or EV streams, expect a fight from local TU group! Fish wardens have caught people dredging for gold where Larry's Creek goes into river. And don't forget you MUST pay a royalty to Pa Fish commission for any removal of minerals from Pa waterways!

I would also think that you normally wouldn't be panning into the hole that you're trying to dig since you're gonna end up digging all that dirt again I don't understand why you didn't go to the right a little bit and use the stream
@Klesh
@Klesh 4 ай бұрын
Good question. I sometimes pan directly into the stream, but when I already have a hole (especially when I don't plan on digging any more material out if it) I'll just use that instead. Less water flow is better to prevent losing gold, plus it's a bit deeper. Thanks for the comment!

Sometimes with a magnet I will get the magnetic black sand out and it makes the fine gold more visible.

That sure would be a lot closer for me than central Ohio. Susquehanna County isn’t so hot. 😂

Shane, if you had run one of those portable sluices, would you get any of that flour gold? Given how many colors you had in that pan it might be a nice day for somebody if they could catch it. Just curious as to the difficulty for gold that small.
@Klesh

Absolutely, a sluice box (preferably with dream mat) would be excellent here.

There are lots of quartz in creeks not shown on the glacial map. I know a small creek loaded with quartz in Elk county. I'm not a prospector but I know where there is a small falls that flows into as 5 ft diameter and six foot deep pool that I really want to know if there is gold in the bottom. There has to be because it can't get out very easily. If I was younger and brave I would dive down and get a bucket of material.

Yes there might be gold there, however quartz is not a guaranteed indication of gold.

Just the gold, it's tough to bring buckets of dirt through the airport (ive tried in the past, they don't like it).

I have wonderedd this - if superfine flour gold and super thin foil gold behaves more like mica, and moves around the pan easily.
