Of all the guys who I thought were gonna make it, Hightower was the one. I mean, if all the cops looked like him there'd be no crime at all.
Happy January, nice dudes! We're honored to have this video be our first of the year. Today we watched Police Academy for the first time, an 80's comedy classic that's been recommended to us for a while!

For Winslow, they actually found him while he was performing stand up while in production for the film. When Michael grabbed a bullhorn on stage to replace his mic after the power went out and started doing sound effects they decided they NEEDED to have him in the film and wrote his part in after the fact.

A little extra thing for you guys. During the shooting range scene notice everyone but the gun-nut Tackleberry ducks??? That is because he knows firearms so well the knew that the pump action shotgun wasn't loaded because he had not racked a new shell into the chamber thus meaning the gun was not "hot" or dangerous until he reloaded. Michael Winslow was a stand-up comedian. One night, the electricity went out (as did the microphone), so Michael started doing all his sound effects as improv. The writers (or producers) of Police Academy were in the audience and knew they had to write a character for Winslow. And, the actress who played Hooks had been in a musical - Michael Jackson came backstage to meet the cast - and she decided to do an impression of Michael for her Hooks audition. :) I'm a lifelong fan of Police Academy.

A brunch of outsiders working hard to reach a goal which they never thought to achieve, everybody with special character traits they can bring in, and they become real friends as the series continues. Fun fact about Hooks: Bubba Smith (Hightower) said in an interview, that the actress got the loudest voice he ever heard and she really had to hold back for the role 😂 RIP to all actors who passed away, thank you for every time you made me laugh!

It's hard to believe this series hasn't been rebooted yet! Maybe it's for the best. This was on TV all the time in the 90s they even had an animated series. The movies vary in quality but I have fond memories nonetheles!

So that my first comment won't get its heart taken down, I wholeheartedly agree that we need jack-of-all-trades actors and actresses. Interestingly, there was a pilot for a show that showcased an actors hidden talents (basically AGT but celebrity-biased), but it was cancelled.

I love how even though Lassard is typically sort of bumbling and clueless, he's got his moments. Perfect fit with the recruits. The part about him pondering over saving Harris is him acknowledging how much of a jerk Harris is. The rest of the series has plenty of fun moments. The movies are really good for movie night movies. As some other commenters point out, the Cannonball Run movies might be something you can have fun with. Parts 1 and 2. Bonus features there is the opening theme is sung by Ray Stevens, it is somewhat based on the real race, and the first movie was Jackie Chan's first American movie.

The same two guys also wrote Batchelor Party with Tom Hanks. And the latter writer, Pat Proft, he co-wrote the two Hot Shots movies.

Tackleberry was my favorite character in the series. The actor was great and did a good job.

Michael Winslow also had picked his handcuffs that were supposed to have him secured to the chair when he’s introduced.

Michael Winslow's first movie role was a spot-on Jimi Hendrix impression (he sang the vocal AND guitar part), near the end of the classic Cheech & Chong film, Nice Dreams. Must watch!

My dad's friend was kinda like Winslow, but he's limited to musical instrument sounds. Everytime his friends were playing guitar he joined in with a 'fake' harmonica and it was really good too XD

Police Academy is fascinating as a FRANCHISE because the box office and budget for each film follows a perfect curve. They made the first 6 of these /annually/ every March through the 80s...and then they went on to have almost no relevence.

I always loved historical comedies like these, and I wish to see more from you guys! I have an idea for a film to watch... Naked Gun 2 1/2! while also having to do some others like The Mask from 1996 starring Jim Carrey! I hope more reactions to classics are to come soon! *....COLUMBO!!! COLUMBO!!!!!*

If you notice during the shotgun scene, Tackleberry is the only one who doesn't duck, because he knows the gun hasn't been cocked to load in a new round.

Keep up the great work guys! Im loving your takes on movies I grew up with ^_^ You mentioned Mel Brooks again at the end, you should totally watch "Silent Movie", its probably my favorite Brooks film. No only does Brooks have the main role in the film, Marty Feldman from Young Frankenstein is also in it along with loads of A list movie stars from the time. Its a great comedy!

The song in The Blue Oyster Bar is the 1975 song "El Bimbo" by Gigliola Cinquettio. In traditional Italian "el bimbo" is a diminutive form of "el bambino" which means "little boy". I will leave it to your imagination how that term applies to the two rookies who stumble into that bar, twice. As I recall, 'The Boys' in Atlanta found this scene hilarious in the Eighties. They had a bad history with cops hassling their bars. I've been in a couple of leather bars, back then, as a hetero tag-along: This scene is only somewhat exaggerated.
