Episode 3 already hits with emotions a lot, and this is when I realized this story will be special for me. Especially the topic about surpassed strong emotions and when there's too much of them, they cause "explosion" and bad things can happen, people may get hurt etc. This is pretty much Mob's problem, colored with flashy psychic powers but all of this is just about learning how to deal with rising stress, emotions and flawed people properly.
@loregoblin3854 Жыл бұрын
I love how Mob's percentage towards his next explosion is such an incredibly good tool to help communicate Mob's emotional state. it can be really funny sometimes... like if something potentially stressful happens near him but the percentage goes up like 2 points because he doesn't care that much, or if something seemingly minor happens, but he jumps from like 60% to 80%... it's effective when used as a joke, but it also tells you a lot about what Mob cares for. like, what actually stresses him out, or makes him feel worse or better. you can even make note of when something lowers the percentage because whatever he was worried about feels alleviated. Mob doesn't express his emotions outwardly very much, but his internal emotional state is as clear as ever this way. he's just slow to react... he has to be careful. and other people might not understand it, but there's a lot more at stake when he has a meltdown. in a way, he sacrifices his ability to have a more robust emotional range on the surface, for the sake of deliberately trying not to hurt anyone.
@loregoblin3854 Жыл бұрын
@@mageburger6183 that's why I love what Reigen says to him at the end... he doesn't deny that Mob can't read a room, and he acknowledges that Mob was different from everyone else there. but he makes sure that Mob knows he didn't do a bad job, and that his differences will have pros and cons. it's not as though Mob has nothing to work on... but in this case, he was able to do something helpful to a lot of people. and not only that, but this is a really early sign of something that gets explored in much more depth later... the idea that Mob and Reigen each have an approach that is very different, but neither are wrong. Mob is in some ways a little too trusting, and tends to take things at face value... but his earnestness is incredibly trustworthy at the same time. and Reigen is incredibly skeptical, to the point where he can overcorrect and become sneaky for no reason, or too suspicious... but he also knows a lot about how people work, and can avoid the pitfalls when others aren't being honest. and between the two, they each have better and worse moments... but when one of them isn't handling something well, the other usually has at least some part of the answer. together they signify a need for balance between accommodating others, and protecting one's own self interest.

aaaaaah I love this show! even by episode 3 there’s already so much happening with this show’s themes! like, from what we’ve seen, Shigeo is pretty deadpan… it’s a combination of his natural personality, and the fact that he feels the need to control himself a lot more than most kids, because his powers are really strong, and there are bigger consequences for him if he does something he didn’t mean to. but that phrase they keep using… “get a clue” or like… I’ve also heard it translated as “read the room” before. in Japanese it’s a common phrase that is often used for people who don’t pick up on social cues, or won’t laugh along with the group, or people who are generally socially awkward, quiet, serious, etc. and as someone who has trouble socializing, Shigeo has clearly heard it a lot. what’s interesting about this episode is that a lot of things are called into question. the cult leader, Dimple, has a lot of followers… does that make him popular? does his popularity mean anything? probably not… but some of what he said bothered Shigeo. like when he’s talking about how Shigeo won’t be able to relate to anyone, or share his feelings with people who are important to him. Dimple literally calls him a corpse, and suggests that Shigeo doesn’t even have emotions while equating him to livestock. but then when Shigeo’s percentage reaches 100, and his emotions overflow, along with his powers… Dimple calls him a monster. in either case, whether he’s too much, or not enough… people keep asking whether or not Shigeo is even human. and considering his abilities, and the way they set him apart from everyone… Shigeo might even feel a little shaky about that. this is a really strong introduction to this show’s theme of collectives and individuals, and how they interact. what is a collective’s responsibility to an individual, and, what is an individual’s responsibility to a collective? how do we serve society, and how does it serve us? and when there is a conflict between society and the self, how do we resolve this? how much does it matter to be liked by others? how much is it appropriate to compromise your self? it’s actually a pretty tricky needle to thread, and Shigeo isn’t very good at that right now. this is what differentiates this show from One Punch Man… in Saitama’s fights, his primary conundrum is finding what will solve his emotional malaise. but in Mob Psycho 100, Shigeo struggles with how the existence of his powers makes his place in the world unclear. and even when Shigeo himself decides on a place he wants to be, there are a lot of people out there who simply won’t see him that way. what can he do about that? what will he become as his concept of himself evolves?
@timeforamazingchest5271 Жыл бұрын
You get it! I feel Mob Psycho is a huge step up from OPM in terms of emotional depth and how themes and ideas conflict. Dimple is popular, but it's not because he has charisma, and it's not because he's a good person. He's popular because he's powerful. It's the same with Hanazawa. Mob could have that same following and charisma if he just used his powers to make people like him. It would probably be too easy, as well. But the problem is that using his powers in that way would warp his personality. Hanazawa and Dimple have deep god complexes when Mob meets them. Mob may still be an underdeveloped teenager, but he's still self-aware enough to know instinctively that he wants to avoid growing into something like that, so he will willingly handicap himself to prevent it. In a hierarchical society like ours, it's commonplace for people to hold positions of power over others. Some might even say it's necessary. Why is using psychic powers any worse than any other method of getting people to like you? Is defeating an antagonist who normal people are attracted to just another way of controlling those normal people? Just what does it mean to have power in the first place? Some very interesting questions.
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
@@timeforamazingchest5271 I agree... and like, I don't want to mention too many spoilers for episodes that he'll be watching soon, but basically, Shigeo is correct when he tells Ritsu that there are some things psychic powers won't get him. Ritsu doesn't listen, in the same way that Dimple doesn't listen, in the same way that Teru won't listen... to them, if you use enough brute force, you can shortcut your way to whatever end goal you want. short term things like muscular strength, or being good at math class... that all wouldn't matter if a person had complete control. but eventually we'll see that taking control can cause a person to lose things as well... most importantly: trust. how is anyone supposed to really trust you if they're aware of not only the huge imbalance of power between you, but also your willingness to use it for the purposes of subjugation if you don't get your way? and on the same token, if you're powerful, sure... some people will flock to that. whether it's to gain some of the benefit from your success, or to have some semblance of security by currying favor with you, or just to absorb runoff clout that they can brag about for their own benefit... but that kind of arrangement tends to select for a certain kind of person. you'd end up only with the sorts of relationships that you can't trust to be sincere. in the end, it's just the same problem all over again... you wouldn't really be close to anyone. and sort of like with the body improvement club, what Shigeo really wants is something he's not very good at yet. he wants to be close to people, and have reciprocal relationships with them. how can he do that if he doesn't control himself? so we end up at this point, where his level of "self control" is so great, that he constantly bottles up his feelings. he doesn't really let anything out, and Dimple's initial comments toward him are how people end up seeing him. as someone who doesn't even have feelings, and possibly, as someone who can't understand anyone else's either. obviously that's not true, but other people's perception of him is one of the things he has to struggle with.

This series isnt actually about fights with psychic powers and such. Its about a young boy with personal problems coming to terms with his emotions and existence, and learning how to grow and improve as a person. Notice whenever mob goes to 100% it is always a different emotion he is feeling, and that theres always some sort of arc spanning a few episodes before that which will build up his emotional state to that climax. There is so much nuance to every situation mob is in an you can always see how it is affecting him and why he chooses what he does if you pay attention to the dialogue closely. The way this show handles these themes is why i consider this show to incredible and definitely tied for my favourite anime ever. Season 1 is a little slow at times, and can definitely get boring but there are some incredible moments in it too, while i genuinely wholeheartedly believe that season 2 is an actual masterpiece in both storytelling and art, that every anime fan should experience

MP is actually my favorite anime overall. not only because of the plot, each characters individual characteristics, yes that too. but mainly, and i mean 90%, because of the legend, the hero, the idol…. REIGEn. i think im reigens biggest fan. id like to think that. i dont think anyone likes reigen as much as i do because my toes curls when i just think of him. dont get me wrong, mob dimple etc are cute and amazing but reigen just does it for me. i love this man. mwah. 10/10
