The Alien franchise is in between a rock and a hard place, Fede Alvarez did a great job with this film keeping within those limits to please the studio and fans. We could have had a reboot of sorts, with Neil Blomkamp at the helm (would have erased 3 and Resurrection from canon) but the studio thought it was too risky (utter morons). After Ridley Scotts origin story didn't end up performing so well (it was profitable, but they wanted a massive hit, billion dollar per film territory apparently) getting another film off the ground (from what I've read) really wasn't an easy feat - the studio didn't want to pump money into what some execs thought was a dying franchise (even though it wasn't and decade after decade, Hollywood execs prove to us they have zero clue yet are paid ridiculous amounts of money). There was always going to be a lot of familiarity, Alvarez not not only took a lot of inspiration from Alien: Isolation, but apparently also used it as a means to display just how much of a fan base the Alien franchise still has during pitch meetings. His success in the horror genre over the past decade+ also surely helped get the project green lit and you can tell he wanted to make something Alien fans would love, even if there are some issues with it that film critics will pick apart (but they always do, Romulus was never going to be Citizen Kain and that's perfectly fine). If anything this film leaves me excited for the future of the franchise - maybe Scott gets to finish his origins trilogy and close out Davids story? maybe we get to see Ripley again but in an entirely new film that tries to do something new? maybe we get Aliens 2.0 with another but set in a farther future space marines action oriented flick where they have to deal with an Xenomorph threat situation like has been depicted in the Dark Horse comics that are about as brutal, horrific, graphic and in most cases hopeless and filled with dread as you could imagine (hint, the Xenomorphs win a lot of the time and overrun colonies of people and all those that are involved can hope to do, is run and hide but maybe only one or two people ever make it out). I'd watch that, sometimes the bad guys should win, but with some commentary around the concept that Tigers will be Tigers so while it's horrific to those caught in the crossfire, they're just acting on their natural survival instincts for their species.
