Nick Rant 2016: Confirmed Awful Company

After eight years of ranting about this network, I am now 100 percent convinced Nickelodeon and it's executives are awful. Here is some proof that confirms all my suspicions.

Glad you brought the Harvey Beaks team's poor treatment by Nickelodeon to people's attention. The creators of Harvey poured years of their life into making Harvey Beaks as exceptional as they could, and while it may not have got the ratings of Spongebob, they were treated like dirt by Nickelodeon in the end. Which said alot about the network.. Hopefully CN or Disney XD will pick those creative minds up :)

This is sad. Nickelodeon was one of my favourite networks growing up. I loved watching Old Spongebob, Drake and Josh, Fairly OddParents, Kenan and Kel, Rugrats, Zoey 101, Jimmy Neutron, Ned's Declassified, Danny Phantom and even nowadays, I still enjoy some of the more recent Nick shows like Penguins of Madagascar and House of Anubis but seeing this is just depressing. They've essentially become the Spongebob Channel, they've gotten so lazy that they just get whatever talent they can off the Internet instead of getting actual talented TV show makers but they don't care because they have Spongebob to fall back on and even when a good show manages to come on the channel every now and then like Harvey Beaks, Korra, Penguins, Anubis or the Loud House, they are always just living in the shadow of Spongebob. That makes me sad

Main problems with Nickelodeon: 1. Spamming SpongeBob. 2. Spamming the same five movies week after week. 3. Bumpers and advertising content based on Internet memes. 4. Shows with the plug pulled after running a certain number of episodes (Victorious). 5. Shows ran over and over-produced despite personal problems with the people acting (Sam & Cat). 6. Shows not particularly liked by the channel screwed over by messing with fanbases.

I feel so bad for C.H. Greenblatt. He's put so much of his time, effort, and passion into Harvey Beaks, and Nickelodeon has given this show HORRIBLE treatment. 8 Months Later: Yeah, Nick still sucks. Aside SB and The Loud House, they got nothing anymore. Modern Nickelodeon: "Bunsen is a Beast, Welcome to the Wayne, Harvey Beaks, and the Legend of Korra ? Pff, screw variety ! Why have variety when we can just play SpongeBob, Loud House, LCD sitcoms, and spinoffs all day over and over again !! STAY TUNED NEXT WEEKEND WHEN WE PLAY THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE FOR THE 3000TH TIME IN A ROW, #LIT!!" To me, Nick really hasn't been the same since they rebranded in 2009. Aside some gems here and there, Nick has overplayed the tar out of SpongeBob while they ignore most of their high quality shows and only focus on spinoffs or cash grab sitcoms. At first I didn't mind the overplay of the show in the late 2000s because at least there was still some variety and other shows to pick from, but after that and as the year's went on and shows came and went. Nickelodeon just seem to completely lose all of it's variety because none of their new shows could compare to the success (and even the quality) of the Sponge. As the year's go on they just continue to rely more and more on SpongeBob to where it takes up more than 60% of the channel ( the other 40% is The Loud House, which while I do enjoy the show, the overplay of it isn't much better either). I just tend to roll my eyes because I have grown just so beyond sick and tired of seeing most TV channels nowdays solely rely on simply one or just a few shows and overplay them to death to where there is no variety or creativity left anymore, and Nick is one of the biggest examples. It's even inspired Cartoon Network now because that's all they've been doing for the last few year's is overrun Teen Titans Go ( and to a lesser extent, Gumball ). God It's no wonder why Cable is dying.

Fingers crossed Miraculous and Loud House don't get screwed over by Nick as well. Outside of Spongebob, new TMNT, and (For reasons I don't understand still) Fairly Odd Parents, it really feels like the network doesn't care much for it's animated series. Whether it be booting them off to their sister network(or in Korra's case, the website of Nick), having awful schedulding, and/or giving little advertisement to them, they don't seem to care for them unless it'll make em moolah. Just look at Spongebob and TMNT. I'm certain that at least part of why they're not screwed over is because of all the merchandising and money they make(Though I think TMNT had some problems with advertising and schedules as well at some points). However, I'm still confused about FOP. I haven't seen much(if any) merch for the series, I rarely hear anyone talk about it or mention it outside of criticism or surprise that it's still going, and the show itself feels like nobody really cares(Even Spongebob at it's worse, you can still get the feeling that at least their was some effort put into it. Most of the time...). It really feels like the definition of a show on life support. TBH, I kinda feel bad for shows like Sanjay & Craig and Pig, Goat, Bannana, Cricket(Or whatever it was called). Sure I didn't really care for them, but at the same time, I can't help but feel like they might of had problems with Nickeloadeon as well. Plus I heard that S&C actually got better later on. :/

Miraculous isn't an actual Nicktoon. It only airs on Nickelodeon, but not in other countries. Most countries air it on Disney Channel, in fact. So, Nick isn't responsible for the production of the episodes, but maybe the dub. Since Loud House has gotten more views than SpongeBob in its first month, I'm no all too sure whether they'll get rid of it. What I do know is that they decided to start Season 2 right after Season 1 ended. Yeah, it's only been over a half year and they're immediately pasting Season 2 on it. And they ordered a Season 3 before Season 2 began, too. It's the Summer of Steven all over again. The most positive thing I can say about the current FOP is that the staff can still make me laugh at times. However, what I've noticed is that Season 10 doesn't have much structure and most things are very random. And while some episodes do make me laugh, others bore me to death. And Chloe... well, there's a manner to do her right, but sometimes, the creators make her too much of a Mary Sue, while they make Timmy _very_ dependent at times. In "Return of the LOSERS", Timmy is so dependent that he barely knows how to walk by himself. I just wish that series could end on a high note with returning characters and, say, writing similar to Seasons 1-3.

Jeff Smith, the creator of the graphic novel Bone, sold the rights of the series to Nickelodeon to make a movie adaptation in the late 90s; but Smith pulled the plug when he found out that Nick didn´t take the franchise seriously, as they wanted to make child actors play the Bone cousins and even wanted to add BRITNEY SPEARS songs to the soundtracks, I´m not kidding... So yeah, they don´t even respect franchises that didn´t create.

The last good cartoon Nickelodeon has seen before they went to hell and then got back on track with Harvey Beaks and The Loud House was, in my opinion, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. The premise was simple, a superhero show in Mexico, but what the creators did with it was actually pretty amazing. The art style was unique, the animation was really good for something in Flash, the characters were likeable, and it was fueled by the creators' childhood and Mexican heritage (see Grave Escape for the biggest example; it was an episode taking place on Dia de los Muertos). It only got two seasons that were 26 11-minute episodes and was only run on NickToons, a channel not many people can get. But at least the creators were able to transfer some of what made the show great into the film The Book of Life. I highly recommend both, they're just fantastic works of art.

I knew that Nick sh*ts on its creators ever since they coerced Butch Hartman's team to abandon their beloved and well-planned Danny Phantom series to put more focus on the f**king Fairly Oddparents. Hartman's team poured a ton of creativity and planning into Danny Phantom, having at LEAST five full seasons planned from start to finish with all of the storylines completely prepared for. But Nickelodeon kept shoving Danny into "Dead Zone" timeslots (any time before 3:00pm when most schools were still in session) and playing only the first five episodes as reruns to tear down the ratings. Then they used that as an excuse to cancel Danny Phantom after the 3rd season, which the creative team didn't know was gonna happen until halfway into making Season 3. This is why the Season 3 finale of Danny Phantom seems so half assed and it comes right after a few episodes where a ton of storylines are just getting started: There were at least two more seasons of material tossed away and a series finale done up last minute because Nick f**ked them over. Ever since I found out about this, I have refused to purchase or watch anything Nick related if it would earn Nick money.

Here's the thing: the EXECUTIVES and the head-honchos with Viacom are the ones in charge of forcing Nickelodeon, not the people in Nickelodeon Animation Studios. And C.H. Greenblatt made a point in saying this in his Tumblr. Nick, the animation studio, has given as much freedom as they can, considering the circumstances. However, it was the higher-ups at Nickelodeon, with almost no regard for animation and only a care for money, that have made this situation as awful as it's been. And they need to understand that this is going to hurt them. HARD. After all of what Nick has put us through, and especially with how outspoken Nick creators have been with this, in the past, they need to know a simple band-aid apology isn't going to fix this. Especially when it comes to their word over Greenblatt's. He's earned our trust, and has been incredibly open with his fans about this stuff for years. Nick has done nothing but make us speculate, hate, and disapprove of how they run their shows. And, look: I get why Nick has those early morning timeslots. SOMETHING has to be there. But, moving some of your most popular shows to there, while the rest are either put into production and having problems after the fact, or having them cut entirely before their runs are over. In terms of the CREATION side of Nickelodeon, they are bar-none the most open and caring about letting their shoes do what they want. However, in terms of the BUSINESS side, they've absolutely destroyed the channel. The logo, the shows, the timeslots, the weird sports sponsorships, the greenlighting of either really weird or unnecessarily bad shows/shows made in MS Paint by a FAN.......I could go on for days. However, I think The Rise and Fall of Nickelodeon (TRAFON)/Clint does a better job at explaining this than I ever could. As for this video, thank you for spreading the word, Pie. A video from you will help tons with this cause.

It's such a shame that Nick is the way it is because before Spongebob when they were rotating shows like Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life, Catdog, etc, it seemed like they genuinely cared about the quality of the shows and each show got great traction. Everyone remembered their 90s cartoons thanks to them being consistently rotated compared to after Spongebob hit popularity by it's third season right before the movie. And I don't hate Spongebob, I love the first 4 and half seasons of the show but you're right, it's pretty much Nick's golden boy and they play him so frequently that you hardly get exposed to other shows that could've been worthwhile. And I just hate how they try to push Spongebob as the best show the network ever had to offer. What about other shows like Danny Phantom, Avatar the Last Airbender, Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, and to an extent, Fairly Odd Parents (I say "extent" because that show went down the crapper as well). I'd say that maybe they will change but they won't. Spongebob is their cash cow slave and until that show retires (which most likely won't be for a long time), they'll keep doing these practices till the end of time. I do think C.H. Greenblatt has guts being completely honest about this kind thing.

I mean, I really didn't get into Nickelodeon until late 1999, early 2000 because I didn't have cable during the 90s and when we got it in 1998, I was mostly watching Cartoon Network and Toon Disney. I really like Spongebob but when I think back to around 2004, I remember being really into Danny Phantom but the show wasn't played nearly as much as Spongebob for example.

I saw that article and I've heard things through the grapevine from other animation friends of mine. I though what you had to say was very informative and I really respect you sticking up for the creators. I'm on the path of creating and pushing my own original content, and I can only imagine the heartbreak he felt when you pour your whole heart into a project that you love and believe in and the structure of that network doesn't even provide a decent opportunity for the viewers to become attached to the characters and the worlds. It's somewhat disheartening to see this happen, but I feel like we're in an age where there are so many other outlets for creators to push their work out there - whether it's on demand, online, etc - I feel like there's much hope for the future with the distribution platforms expanding. I'm interested to see what the landscape of televised animation will look like in 5 years after a wave of talented creators and animators take matters into their own hands and are rocking it on their own.

I have said it before and I will say it again, Nickelodeon cannot survive without the Sponge. They literally would cease to exist as a television network if something were to happen to their nest egg. This is why they feel they have the ability to treat many of their other shows like crap. They tend to do this to shows that IMO are good if not great and have a pretty decent following. I was really disappointed with how they handled the third and final season of Avatar. Granted this show ended almost 10 years ago, but they horribly rushed this season by putting it on at a very awkward time (I believe 7pm) each weekday for one month straight. I was mostly unavailable at that time and only realized the show was airing like that because of promos. I did eventually see the entire season online several years later and was appalled that such an important season was crammed into such a short time period. Nickelodeon did virtually the same thing with the final season of Danny Phantom at around the same time. Korra was a show that I really wanted to get into when it originally aired but never did. The year the show premiered I was too busy with school and other things that I couldn't watch the episodes as they aired and therefore missed out on the entire series. I couldn't believe it only got two seasons before it was cancelled. Now that I know (and have known this for a while) that Nickelodeon only cares about shows that will bring them endless amounts of cash, it is very easy for me to speculate about which shows will enjoy a long run and those that will be cancelled after about two seasons. In many cases, audiences don't even know that a show has been cancelled. They just stop seeing it in the lineup and have to figure it out on their own. The only shows in recent memory for me that have gotten the kind of sendoff they deserved were Dan Schneider shows with the exception of Victorious and Sam and Cat. With Victorious fans to this day are flooding Dan with requests for him to get the cast back together for one final hour long special to tie up loose ends. From what I have seen him say, it seems like he's open to the idea but is having trouble getting the entire cast on board. With Ariana Grande a huge pop star and having pretty much put her acting career on hold until further notice, the likelihood of a proper ending to Victorious looks like it may never happen. Sam and Cat will never get a proper ending either since there were a lot of behind the scenes drama that led to the show being cancelled. I sometimes watch Nickelodeon when literally there is nothing else on and the quality of the programming they have is beyond atrocious. The only aspect of Nickelodeon that I have to give them a tremendous amount of credit for is The Splat. They really have been able to tap into the nostalgia that children of the 90's feel for the network's golden age. Hell, they are even having a one night only 30th anniversary reunion special for Double Dare. If Nickelodeon was smart, they would actually want to have The Splat be a separate cable network like Nick GAS used to be instead of having it be a programming block in the overnight hours on TeenNick. I think one of the best ways to figure out what kids these days want to see on TV is to conduct focus groups with kids of all ages. Either they aren't doing this or they are spoon feeding the children in the group the answers that the network wants to hear. In the end I feel badly for the creators of the shows because they are at the mercy of the executives as to their production cycle and when the episodes will ultimately air. I remember when SpongeBob fans were promised new episodes and the production team said they had a few in the can but they weren't aired yet because Nickelodeon hadn't decided to air them yet. Also the creators are at the mercy of the network sometimes for even what types of episodes they must produce. Back about 6-7 years ago Nickelodeon decided they wanted to do a night of environmentally conscious episodes of their current lineup to celebrate Earth Day. Dan Schneider at the time used to post on his blog scene by scene fun facts about each iCarly episode. When it came to the environmentally friendly episode he said that the idea for this episode was not his but instead he was forced to do one by the network. He didn't seem too happy to be told what type of episode he should be doing. Greed doesn't make for a healthy work environment and leads to poor quality programming. Nickelodeon executives need to back off of their bottom line just a little bit and give more freedom to the creators of their shows and I'll bet anything that the quality of the shows goes up even a little bit because of this.

Whats so sad about the sponge is that even in his infantile days, Nick abused and over worked the production crew like slaves. Fights regularly broke out between story board artists and writers, people lost tons of sleep and suffered mental health problems because of it, and the pay they received for making that Golden goose? Basically pocket change compared to what the show made in profits and marketing. I feel like in the late 90s Nick realized the actual kind of revenue their company could bank, and because of that, became too big for their britches in a sense. It went from a company that wanted to distribute cartoons, to a company that wanted to distribute a marketable product, which is fine, if you dont let that oversight consume the company as a whole. Thats why I love adult swim so much. They're always trying new things and the variety they have in regarding shows is huge. Metalocalypse, Aqua Teen, Robot Chicken, Archer, Sea Lab 2021, all of these shows are quite fundamentally different to say the least but they all have a very unique charm that works on a wide audience.

CN and Disney Channel/XD are just as bad, if not worse. At least Spongebob earned it's popularity for more than a decade to be Nick's top show, unlike Teen Titans Go, which has been forced down our throats for the past 3 years. Even months after it's debut, the show already started taking over. The only reason that show gets so many views, is because it's all CN ever shows anymore! Spongebob earned it's ratings to be on as many times as it has been. Nickelodeon started off slow and fair with Spongebob, but gave it better attention years later, when it even surpassed the Rugratz in popularity. I remember liking Spongebob so much as a kid, I didn't even care when I realized Rugratz wasn't on anymore, and I still do enjoy the show at times. Teen Titans Go! wasn't given a fair chance to rise, it was over saturated from the beginning, and CN kept kissing up to it, while treating the other shows and creators like garbage. TTG is a cheap, manipulative, and lazy show that doesn't cost CN much to let DC produce, which is why they're so desperate to show it all day. I'll bet CN will lose a lot of views during their TTG marathon, because there are plenty of people who tune into CN to watch other shows, and many of them boycott TTG, so if CN thinks it's a good idea to show that show all day, they're going to be missing out on a lot of views.

Except Adventure Time isn't even close to being as old as Spongebob. Spongebob was released in 1999, and is still going. Adventure Time made it's CN debut back in 2010, and will be ending next year unfortunately. Spongebob is 17 years old, while Adventure Time is 6 years old, unless you count the original Nickelodeon pilot for the show, then Adventure Time is 9 years old.

Yup, especially NOW. how sad is this; Nickelodeon was once THE American company to come to with original and unique animated cartoons to showcase on a global scale. It was one of if not the first TV network who coined the phrase "creator driven" concept by encouraging artists to come up with ideas NOT having to only be based on toys or pre-existing property. Talk about a fall from grace...............

I feel like the future of animation should be in streaming areas like Netflix or Hulu. I mean how many times has a show been screwed over by CN, Nickelodeon or Disney XD and yeah Nick is the worst by far you can't even put the other 2 in the same room as them but the other 2 have their own lesser stupid decisions that they have made in the past. So I really think companies like Netflix should put themselves out their and get more people in animation to make great shows for them hell just recently they got some of the Korra people that Nick screwed over to make a great Voltron cartoon for them so lets see more of that.

Actually I have a question: does this change your opinion at all about how you feel regarding shows that end and whether they've had a "fair shake" and all that? Because if this debacle has shown me anything, it's that getting a decent # of episodes doesn't mean your show is being treated fairly. It also conflicts perhaps with your point of there being somewhat of a benefit to shows having shorter life spans (yes I know that this and that point are technically not the same thing, but now with this story out there I think it's at least an interesting analysis to make)

It's not really contradictory to what I said in that video. IF it didn't get a fair chance thanks to network interference or whatever, then yeah, it really does suck. Though there is a benefit in having a shorter series, I never said I am explicitly against longer shows. Just that there is upsides and downsides to both.
