There's a lot to like about farmhouse - lots of light, simple clean lines, white walls/black hardware, natural materials. The bones of the style are comfortable and refreshing. It's the labels, words as decor, and stupid theme props that are loathesome.

As an ADHD person I think your advise about hiding the clutter was very on point. Yeah, I get to forgot where things went veeeery often. But you know what is worse? Distractions. The environment which is disturbing my focus is worse than forgetting where I put my clutter. So, thank you for this advise, I took it and I applied it during my recent makeover and I’m loving it!

Yeah, I feel like for us ADHDers there’s a good middle ground. Maybe all the power cords go in a box with neatly printed label? Or we just remember that all our art supplies are in a certain basket. Less visible clutter but not such a fussy system to be a barrier to using our stuff.

Yes! Same, adhd too. As I get older the more I feel the clutter needs to go. I used to be able to deal with it, but we've downsized to a smaller house. Which is actually a really good thing for organization, definitelyrecommend it. It forces you to not collect things unnecessarily.

I hired a professional organizer to help with my ADHD... she got me lots of closed storage, but with properly sized bins so that as soon as you open a cabinet, you know exactly what you're looking at. She also got me a bunch of flip-down work surfaces so that I could have all my stuff out when I was working on something, but it could all get hidden away when I wasn't working on it. And it had a place to go that wasn't the kitchen counter.

Of all the design channels I've watched; yours is the most enjoyable and well-mannered, and you give thoughtful, reasonable, and knowledgeable advise. Hello from a millenial plant lover 💚 A possible explanation of plant overuse which has nothing to do with boho/jungalow: I used to have a plant filled apartment when living on 8th floor, and it kept me sane because all I was seeing out of my windows was another (ugly) concrete buildings. Then after moving to a way more natural surroundings on a 2nd floor, where there are nice tall green trees all the way around, a kept only a small percentage of my plants. I love them quite the same as the trees outside. So in some cases it could be just a natural need for connection with the Earth, not really a design choice 😉

I've enjoyed plants before it was a trend, but folks really went wild when the public discovered that they can keep plants indoors AND discovered that they have enough time to keep +200 of them alive. My only issue with this is that people were throwing so much money away on plants, and calling is "self-care". And instead of having a touch of nature in an otherwise sterile bedroom or living space, it was rows and rows of cluttered plants 60% of which don't even look healthy anyways. That or folks were so busy propagating that only a very few of their plants actually looked good. Even as a person who likes plant (I find the term "plant dad" or "plant parent" a bit cliquey and cringy), your plants should complement your living space. Not take it over. Time and time and again, people were going through phases of collection and purges.

I love this so much! I lived in a tiny, 800 square-foot apartment with my two children, Husband, and the dog. We had over 300 plants in that apartment mostly because I loved that nature feeling when we moved into our 1500 square-foot house I substantially downsized, and now I have less than 50 plants. Because we can see trees and nature and I have an outdoor garden now. I agree for me it was all about the connection to nature.

Ceiling fans are actually great for cold climates too. Put them on "winter mode" and they push the warm air downward and can save on heating bills.

I hadn't heard of this tip until this comment, but it makes total sense that a slow moving fan would push the warm air back down. Now I'm rethinking my whole design 🙄🤔

I can't move them too far away from a window and I have been trying to figure out how to use them to make some symetrical statement and I finally have realized they tske up 3 feet by 3 feet in my living room. That's legitimately a fantastic idea! I appreciate Nick's kindness and understanding. I was watching this one youtuber years ago who said that sofas or benches at the end of a bed were stupid, she didn't just say she doesn't like them and move on, she belittled the entire notion of a sofa at then foot of the bed, calling it pointless. I let her know that I had one and it was because I am physically disabled and it made a huge difference in my ability to dress myself on my hard days, especially since sitting on the edge of bed didn't offer the kind of support I needed to actually stay up and dress myself.

This is actually a brilliant idea. I don't know why people feel like when you have any sort of physical restriction or disability, you suddenly don't care about style and design. It's exceedingly difficult to find accessible items that fit any aesthetic other than "hospital chic". Even just some way to make standard utilitarian stuff less miserable would be useful. Maybe collab with equipmeot so nothing dangerous is suggested?

Personally I'm surprised that it was a controversy at all, because closed storage is much better at keeping your space less cluttered, which is an all time struggle for people with ADHD. I only recently discovered that having a mesh night stand was the best compromise, because I could somewhat see things inside when I was close enough, but it doesn't look like a mess and people can't tell what's in it from a distance. Open shelving is such a nightmare for me, because I feel attacked by the mess! Working on smart storage has done wonders. For instance, all my underwear is put in storage boxes with wheels that are always under my bed, so I don't have to look at the boxes, but I always know where they are and what is in them. _The psychologist was so right when she told me I should give things their designated place and make it easy first and foremost, in order to soothe some of my inner chaos._

I have ADHD and a background interior design. In my experience, what I found is that having things displayed in open compartment furniture can actually increase anxiety and create more difficulties with executive functioning. The advice I would give to those struggling with this is to pay attention to where you would naturally go to look for something and put it there even if it doesn't make sense. Still air on the side of caution to display too many items out in the open because it may become too stimulating and overwhelming. P.s. Love you Nick and your opinions😘

I've found the happy medium is labels and regular "cullings" where I go through everything I have and re-evaluate the items I've forgotten about. Also selective displaying of uncommonly used objects (I remember where things I use all the time are). It's all about personal solutions.

I like the Split The Difference option of Shelves with Doors on the bottom. display what you Like, doors cover what you Need, and open wide for easy on the spot inventory. Dyspraxic with visual filtering, I can't see what I'm not looking for. - that makes perfect sense, if you know you know.

As a British person, with a mother who is older I have 2 curtain bugbears that I see constantly in room makeover videos. 1. People don't hang their curtain poles wide enough. When you fully open your curtains they shouldn't obstruct the window. Sure they can block the frame if you want but you don't you want to let all that gorgeous light in? 2. You should buy curtains about double the width of your window so the curtains gather luxuriously and fall nicely. No one wants curtains that only just about block out the light or gape in the middle. Another thing about having that extra fabric is that it stops heat escaping the room and can stop drafts coming in from your windows.

My partner and I bought a 120 year old farmhouse that had those dilapidated fans with the daffodil shape shades. We replaced them with sharp modern LED ceiling fans (including our super manly giant ceiling fan of doom in the sitting room.) Because even living in an actual farmhouse is not enough to get us to decorate in farmhouse style.

The most interesting thing about accessibility needs is that they can be fully opposite for different people! That's why I like to share which design opinions/ideas might not work for certain accessibility needs :) My favorite example is that digital buttons/dials are not accessible at all for people who are visually impaired, and need tactile buttons and dials. For myself with my arthritis, digital dials and buttons are WAY easier to use. Also, too many plants IS the look 😁 Honestly though, people do need to understand what "opinion" means.

I never understand why people get so worked up by your comments! You make the most harmless and funny comments about decor that even when it’s about something I love, I still laugh or chuckle and proceed to love you. I’m more of a traditional/French country decor girl and couldn’t be further from modern and other trendy decor. But I enjoy your content so much bc I still find useful tips that bring us all together. I especially love your emphasis on timelessness, nature, and consistency instead of flying with every trend that is in. That’s my mindset when it comes to decorating- not what’s trending but what is timeless, what I enjoy and actually love regardless of what’s in, and always opt for natural materials as much as I can. As someone from Texas, I can totally sympathize with ceiling fans not being optional in any way, but aesthetically, I agree with you; I don't like them, especially on 8ft ceilings. The carpet in the bedroom thing? Yeah, the fact that the condo I'm buying had full LVP and zero carpet was a huge part of the draw. Count me in the recent "no carpet!!" trend, lol!

Central air doesn’t take the place of a fan, especially in a two story house. Ceiling fans supplement the ceiling fan because it’s cheaper to run a ceiling fan than to set the AC temp low, cooling an entire house when you are in one room; or setting the temp lower than most in the home don’t find comfortable.

I lived in Texas for 19 years and I feel ceiling fans (multiple) are nessasary. AC does not do what the ceiling fan does- you NEED both. Having said this, it is hard to find really beautiful fans,,, BUT.. since so many of us live in Farm Houses, maybe we can look at the Dollar Store :) jk ...

I used to be very firmly anti fake flowers, but the problem was I never have enough money for real flowers, so I would perpetually just NOT have flowers in my house. Then, a couple weeks ago, I saw someone mixing real and fake flowers/plants together to make a really nice display and I thought... maybe.... I could try.... some fake plants. It was a very good decision. I have some decent looking fake flowers that add some charm to my space and I went outside and cut some branches off of a tree and mixed those with some fake flowers in my bathroom and the effect is so wonderful. I didn't think my brain would be able to turn off the fact they are fake, but it's actually been an easier transition than I thought.

Fake plants are also great for places with little natural light 👍 I have a big window in my bedroom but I have light sensitivity, so my black not-quite-sheer-not-quite-opaque curtains are ALWAYS closed. Even the desk light is turned away to the curtain to dim the light even further, and my computer monitor is on the lowest brightness setting, on top of having an app to further reduce brightness and blue light or I get headaches; there's enough light for me to work at my desk but I wouldn't subject a plant to it. The real miniature rose bush I have stays in the living room (which is a problem because since it's out of sight I tend to forget to water it...) smack dab in front of the big window, but if I wanted a plant for my desk it'd be a fake one.

We renovated 2 years ago, and 1. Put up curtains that puddle a little bit (dog hair gathers there but I try to vacuum often!) 2. We ripped the bedroom carpet out and installed vinyl plank floor and I’m absolutely obsessed with it. (I’m in USA so that fits lmao) 3. Absolutely no pink 😂 4. Updated all our ceiling fans. One of the mantras I now tell myself is, if you like a specific novelty thing, you can very well express it in other ways. It doesn't necessarily have to be on a giant piece of artwork where everyone can see it. For example, some people love those funny "wine o' clock" sayings, and I'd get one as a coffee mug. That way, I can put it away and out of sight when I'm done with it. I collect weird and funky T-shirts. But once I'm done with them, I put them back in the closet. Your personality doesn't have to be expressed all through out an entire living space... aka, things that are a lot harder to cover up if it clashes. :3

I have adhd and struggle with things like out of sight out of mind but also find visual clutter challenging because… of course. I find that labeling cupboards and their contents helps me put things away, remember where they are and also be able to get rid of visual noise. I label everything. Which shoes go in each shoe drawer, kitchen cupboards and drawers, my dresser, book shelves, etc. I try and use cute labels where I can but the important part is the label. Bonus side effect when other people come into my home they can find things and put them away if they need to. I have found it’s also important to have the flexibility to change your labels because I often change opinions on where something SHOULD go in my house

One of my favourite ADHD solutions has been putting a couple of those hanging shoe organizers in my closet with clear plastic shoe bins in every slot. I go in my closet multiple times a day for various things (I keep snacks in there, and my laundry basket) so I see it constantly, and I can see into the individual bins, but I can also close the closet door to hide the visual clutter. I think the shoe bins are the perfect size to hold a decent amount of things while also being small enough that each has its own specific category and I never have to dig for whatever's at the bottom. If I need something, I can just remember to pull out the "various cables" shoebox or the "toiletries I rarely use" shoebox (it helps that I've had this system for years and know by memory which bin is in what location).

I also want to add that mesh items can work great too! My nightstand is in metal mesh, and I can see my pink pill container inside it when I'm right next to it in my bed, but when I'm sitting at my desk I can't see the clutter inside it. The need to clean up the visual clutter is not talked about enough IMO. I'm _definitely_ getting floor to ceiling cabinets with space for all my random stuff when I have my own apartment.

As for plants, I can't keep them because I kill them, but I do appreciate going to a house with a plant room, like the sunny spaces you show at 14:03. Not sure I'd enjoy being at someone's home as much if all their spaces were wall-to-wall plants. That said, most people don't decorate with guests in mind. I do, but I'm weird that way.

1:25 I have this exact same ceiling fan in my bedroom! We moved to a place that was built in the late 80s and I have never seen something like that. It's very hot in the summer here and it still functions well so it's very useful

Thank you for clarifying your point on ceiling fans. I do live in an area where we use our ceiling fans all year during summer and winter to redirect air flow in our 100+ year old home. So, our ceiling fans are not going away anytime soon. We did actually replace our fans a few years ago to a style that is more in keeping with the house. For curtains, I am not going to burn my house down with extra long curtains. I agree with you on that. We have carpet in our bedrooms. I grew up with no carpet in my bedroom and it was sooooo cold in the winter. I love carpet for insulation and sound deadening properties. I want to replace the carpets in our home since they are 25 years old.

Well done. I always appreciate when you help us laugh at ourselves. This one did not disappoint. Would you consider doing a video on "Accidental Design" or "Unintentional Design"? By this I mean design concepts that start out as one thing but turn out with a completely different reality because, well, life happens. "Eclectic " becomes "All the Stuff my Mother Left Me When She Died." Or "Gifted Decor from Other People" Almost any style can become a "Cluttered" version of itself or become entirely different style. ...or a "Dusty" version of itself. Or just too much like when Christmas-y becomes Christmas retail store style. Even Disney does not design its environments to look like its own retail shops. Electrical wires are also an accidental style for so many of us. Washing everything in a diffuse and even light that erases all shadows and textures is another accidental style. I have been guilty of so many of these at different times. What scares me most is the ones I have not allowed myself to be aware of. And some I need to motivate myself to deal with. Like my current "You've Got (too much) Mail" style. Ha-ha; every thing goes down better with a spoonful of sugar and a little laughter. Keep up the candid and good natured advice. Very enjoyable and helpful.

Totally agree with you on the brown ceiling fans ... just replaced mine with white. I use them. Love sleeping with a silent ceiling fan slowly moving the air around in my bedroom. Open shelving is awful. You were right. Except books. That's just me. The bottom line is what works best for you to live with ... of course, you need to live in your space, not KZbin. I used to have traditional multi-layered drapes, but they are long gone; in a traditional house with traditional-sized windows, I needed light in the house, so I've gone to sheers everywhere. Much, much better. I love cheesy Christmas crap! When else ever do we get to do this! My goal is to delight the kids on the school bus going by my house twice a day. One of my best friends built her house with a sunroom now full of plants. It is delightful. She knows how to take care of them and they're beautiful. When I want a garden in winter, I visit here. But it wouldn't work for me. Viva la difference. Make it your own!

As a plant parent, I have to agree with you. Some people have become extreme about their plant Ownership to the point where plants take over the house in a very unflattering way. My philosophy has been if I have to buy additional spaces, shelves, stands to put my plants. I have too many plants. My plant should be able to seamlessly fit into the décor of my home, not the other way around.

Just adding that in most western European countries (not the UK) we really don't like carpet floors anywhere in the house. We think it's unhygienic and ugly. It was common in the 20th century, but during the last decades you don't find it anymore in modern or renovated homes. We have carpets on the floor, but the floor itself is wooden or laminate or stone etc. Greetings from Switzerland, from a house with wooden and laminate floors.. 😉

You made me laugh with the comment about not recommending people light their house on fire. My unprofessional suggestion for a heat register under a window might be a roman shade and then floor length curtains that are permanently fixed in their pull backs. If you don't hear it enough, I love hearing your opinions and have learned how much our design tendencies are a product of our generation. Would love to see you design a space for a client with opposite tastes, just as a challenge.

That’s exactly what I am doing with my living room window. I have to put register deflectors on each side of the window, but I chose metal in the same shade as the curtains. Also, a sectional covers one deflector and a planter disguises the other. I needed the walls and moldings on the ends of the windows softened with curtains. The shades alone were too stark and I needed sound echo proofing which happened when we took down walls for more open floor plan. Whew. My reply is longer than I meant. Thanks for your comment. Made me feel more confident in my choice.

It never ceases to amaze me that people can't or won't think for themselves! Everyone has different circumstances that have to be taken into consideration, so one suggestion might be to consider your options, perhaps with advice and suggestions, but ultimately it's their choice. Why you or anyone else should be slammed for an idea not fitting into someone's circumstances is absolutely beyond my understanding! Be that as it may, I love how you handle the "criticism" with your sassy approach to topics and I always find your videos informative, interesting and a whole lot of fun. I have adhd and being able to see my belongings in all this open furniture would be WORSE for me. Imo it still reads as clutter even if its tucked away in a cabinet when that cabinet has no door and you can still see everything in it. Like at that point you might as well just leave it laying around??? The more loose objects i have to take in visually, the more overloaded my brain feels. That said yes, out of sight out of mind. But when it comes to something important that i am actively working with i will leave it out as opposed to stuffing into a drawer cuz i will forget. I think he was referring to furniture that is intended for long-term storage. Idk i guess i am not the kind of adhd person that loses track of my belongings constantly. Cute bins, trays, and jars + cute post its are where it’s at. Put your clutter in cute containers or corral it in a tray. For things that aren’t as easy to remember, a post it. Ex. I have a post it by my door “put keys away” and one by my toaster (I have the same toast breakfast daily) “meds!” Or even “CLEAN THIS THING!” They can go away when company is over and easily be replaced. I have fun writing new ones because I like lettering. Alternatively, a dot sticker that serves as a symbolic reminder can be enough if you know that red dot = ask myself, “did I take my meds yet?” I have some washi tape in cute designs that acts as an “am I on task?” reminder.

I live in the UK 🇬🇧 all the windows 🪟 are situated under a radiator(heating system). For my household during the winter months, when the heating is on, I just tuck the curtains in. But you're right when your curtains are touching the floor slightly it makes a huge difference and gives the eyes an elongated look. My flat has like the lowest ceilings ever 😔, so having my curtains literally touch the ceilings has made a huge huge difference! 😊👍

I'm not the kind of person who has to jump on the bandwagon of something very trendy (notice my avoidance of the phrase "super trendy" and you'll know I'm from the silent generation 🙂) and I LOATH cliched décor. There are some pleasing elements to farm house, but most of it is just too overdone and I don't need to look like every house in middle America. I know elegant sophistication is not popular right now, but I started life very low in wealth so when my finishes hit the right blend of classy yet comfortable and inviting, I'm happy.

My adhd fix for open shelving was to move toward functional minimalism in terms of what I own. And to add small nice labels to enclosed bins. Works for my adhd, but it didn’t work until I did big declutters 4-5 times over several years.

A style I’d love to see you talk more about is boho! Hearing you speak about having “open everything” had me thinking of a lot of open boho decor, and how looking kind of cluttered is kind of a part of the appeal I find. I’d love to hear your thoughts on boho decor, possibly the diy-culture in boho, the appealing clutter, light/dark boho, All that jazz haha

I hate visual clutter! Part of me has been considering labeling the outside of my cabinets to avoid forgetting what I put inside. I can't imagine it'd look good though lol

I hate visual clutter as well. The best advice I ever read was to store things where you naturally first think to look for them even when it doesn't make the most sense. When I first organised my kitchen, I was constantly opening the mug cabinet when I wanted a plate, and vice versa. Swapped them and haven't made that mistake since.
