I like “Victorian Clutter”. It feels very lounge-y and comfortable to me. It’s giving smoking jacket, pipe, and leather slippers. It’s falling asleep with the newspaper on your chest and your feet on an ottoman and the dog at your side. “Victorian Clutter” is extremely cozy and both casual and formal at the same time.

😊 i just decorated my whole new little 700 sq ft house in the Victorian Eastlake furniture from my Great,great aunt's house. All 1850 to 1895 ish. And I've been looking at William Morris (one of Eastlake's contemporaries) fabric to reupholster it. Avert your eyes Nick, lol. Love your channel.

@653j521 11 сағат бұрын
Eastlake and Morris are excellent examples of their era. I can't agree with Nick that Buckingham Palace, or Windsor or Balmoral, have Victorian decor. It is often quite French and goes farther back. Victorian isn't bright, sweepingly huge rooms with sparse furnishing. We know that when Victoria died, her son who despised her taste had them renovated. We could even drag in the White House which also isn't "Victorian," or "Gilded Age" as would have been more accurate in America. There were of course people, like Franklin Roosevelt's horrible mother, who modeled their home decor on what a sad, little widow in Britain liked, crowded, dark, perpetually looking backwards, but most opened the curtains and let in the sun, whether or not it faded something. What I want to know is when are we getting French styles again? French Provincial or any of the Louis clan?

Sounds fabulous ❤. A few years ago I got my hands on an original Victorian buffet from the 1880's with beautifull carvings for 300 bucks. The seller had to go down so much to the point where she said "Not getting any lower I would rather gift that thing to friends who enjoy it". Then I found it on marketplace and didn't dare to haggle, because it's worth every penny. I love the victorian style, though I try to mix it with more turn-of-the-century and pre-war pieces and style elements. I get what Nick sais about the Victorian style it can be to much if it's giving to "royal" vibes. But I go more for the Victorian apothecary/mad scientist vibes than something to elitist lol. So victorian really needs to be spread out well in a space I think

I mostly agree with Nick's point of view, but THIS is what I absolutely disagree with. Haha! I'm renovating my 1910 home, and my main concern is how I'll attach the hanging armchair (that I'm going to DIY) to my ceiling without ruining the original ceiling painting I plan to restore, and where the beams are. 😂 I have some motor restlessness issues and swinging is one thing that keeps my nervous system calm. As a kid, I used to swing for hours and it kept me grounded. I sold my rocking chair a few years back and have regretted it since. Also I collect Moomin mugs and plan to display them in my kitchen. I have 80 of them.

Beachy/coastal decor likely looks very natural and authentic in your home given your location. A big thing with so many styles is authenticity. Beachy/coastal in Kansas wouldn’t work as well since Kansas is basically flat farmland as far as the eye can see. So modern farmhouse (without the signs preferably) would likely work well there as a style. Another example would be trying super modern decor in an old Victorian mansion or Victorian stuff in a glass cube house. The outside doesn’t match the inside in other words.

I grew up with traditional design and a love for antiques just like my mom. A lot of my family decorates that way, although a lot less formal and even as a kid I loved it and I thought the pictures and old movies depicting the decked out formal spaces were so beautiful. So, even though the Victorian style is naturally so formal (perhaps even stuffy) to me, it's so cozy and homey. I don't want to go super formal and feel like I'm stepping into a museum but when I get my own house it will lean traditional/victorian with elements of dark academia and British colonial in there too. I've had a deep love for history and science my entire life.

Yess, I feel the same. Maybe cause growing up my grandparents had antique furniture that I found very beautiful even for casual use as a family dining/breakfast table or a bedroom bookcase. I just moved into my own apartment and am loving the direction it’s going with my modern style college furniture (black, sleek curves) and the new Victorian/vintage items I’ve been gathering (rug, dining table, curtain rods, my china set on display, an art deco lamp, etc.) Who doesn’t want to live in a Sherlock Holmes-esque flat with their own personal touch? Maybe not Nick but I’m in love and can’t wait to have everything in order and start a puzzle on my dining table. Ultimate cozy vibes

The swing in house is actually a very south asian touch. I recall those being in all my grandparents homes. But yes those were different times and style of homes. But we have actually carried them into our modern homes too! Not gonna lie those were absolutely fun you can just sit on one read A book or gossip with others. These arent like swings that you are supposed to swing too high they are more like rockers in air. I dont think they fit in kidult unless the swing is in absolutely kids aesthetics 😅 I met a couple of folks in nyc who did kidult styles. All im said was bye and never looked back.

Kidult honestly seems like an extremely New York thing to do. I'm out here near Seattle, and idk why, but it just doesn't seem like much of a west coast thing to me. Southern California is a bit more trendy, but I feel like Washington is still in the more minimalism mixed with industrial phase. Most coffee shops these days seem so bright and sterile...
@yuvra649
@yuvra649 11 сағат бұрын
@nicoletim8095 you might be right! I've never seen kidult in portland, Chicago or most Midwest. But the again nyc folks are quicker in adopting trends then they trickle late towards other cities. There are nerds around here in Midwest but they have designated area or rooms to nerd out it rarely spills all over the home. Although in my experience folks with kidult homes seem to have a very peculiar personality thats so overwhelming 😅 makes me feel adulting isn't a skill everyone can do.

I agree. We live in the hot tropics (northern Australia) and our elevated house is quite darkish inside - built 50 years ago and has wide overhangs to help mitigate heat. We recently renovated our main bathroom and added on an ensuite and both bathrooms are glossy subway tiles, but only halfway up the walls so it didn’t look like a New York Subway Station lol. We chose gloss as they bounce the light around the room and make the room brighter. They look really great. Have to say I do love the matte subway tiles though. If our bathroom had more light we would have had them.

Today I think I figured out that I think the reason I enjoy multiple patterns and decorate my own home with them (I go for an English cottage vibe) is because I am neurodivergent and like for there always to be something interesting going on around me. My eyes are hunting for visual sensory input and I love surrounding myself with something interesting everywhere. I do keep my patterns all in the same few muted colors, though! So it's interesting everywhere but still soothing and cozy, not overwhelming.

Paint: Eggshell finish on walls, semi gloss trim and doors. Classic for a reason. If children's hand prints and crayons are a part of your life, yes then semi gloss would be a good option for your lifestyle. That trend was sometimes called Provencial or Provencale. After WWI and WWII in Europe and most rural areas in the US, people decorated and repaired with what they could find or had. That explains the mismatched textures, colors, prints, and patterns within the house and odd materials used outside in the yards and gardens, like old toilets (cleaned) for flower planters; and old tires cut and painted white with flowers around the mailbox). People became very creative and recycled everything! Also, primary colors are best used in a baby's nursery as they learn about color. When the child is older and learns about colors and art; then, change their bedroom colors to their favorites. My attic apartment is so mix and match that I call it Eclectic Granny. Nothing actually matches but it is comfortable! LOL!

I’m waiting to move back into my little home but waiting for the tenant to move out. I love colour, florals, vintage and a feminine vibe. This year I have come to the realisation I like quality vintage pieces a middle point between the hoarding, cluttered, cheap, uncomfortable spaces I grew up with and the minimalist and modern that’s popular. I happy to invest in pieces that bring me joy and comfort. I’ve got a modern boucle bed and will get a boucle couch but that’s as modern and trendy as it comes for me. My home will be a warm, bright, airy, cottage, coastal, traditional and feminine space.

When I downsized from a large 5 bedroom home to my small 1400 sq foot ranch. I had to use what I had. That is to say my living room and dining room are more formal and fit the Victorian colonial. I get it reads more formal but it was very expensive when it was purchased. I’ve used the same three colors throughout the house to mesh the formal traditional furniture to make it look more cohesive Very little pattern mostly solid colors

11:38. I always have to chuckle every time you talk about themed rooms. My teenage son’s bedroom/bathroom is themed with video games and the ocean. He loves it and it is really really really a bit much. 😂. He has a HUGE wall mural aquarium on the wall and a shark mirror in the bathroom. The vanity is filled with seashells and rocks. 😂😂😂. Mix this with a do not disturb, I’m gaming sign and a an over sized Minecraft gaming chair. Plus his gaming computer and colored neon LED lights. Nick, you would probably lose your mind in his bedroom. And even though I do agree with you about the themed rooms and art with words, especially neon glowing ones. 😂. I still always think of my son’s room when you talk about it these topics and I laugh. 😂😂😂. Fortunately his room is in the basement, so really only my son, spends time in his room.

You would definitely hate my house. My style is so different form yours, but I still really enjoy your video's! I live in a 1910's home, and I'm working on bringing it back to that time period. Including all antique furniture and stuff. I love mixing patterns, and have a lot of antique chairs. I agree, the style is formal, but for me that doesn't mean I can't relax in it. I find it easiest to relax in a space that I find beautiful, so I'm completely relaxed in my sweatpants, with my feet up, on my antique but comfortable sofa, eating a bag of chips.

Used to honestly love patterned things, now idk wht happened? ..I outgrown them. Those patterns makes room feel so messy, not harmony & not somethin I would wnt to get home to. Just noticed changes of taste started after finishing school & started working, stress of work etc made me just wanna go home to something simple quiet harmony relaxing, not eye-popping, just something that can make me feel good & unwind. Which definitely explained when people were in covid, they were losing their minds with boredom, would mix pattern up. Now I get why kids love big bold bright patterns, cos it's exciting, alluring & you got nothing to do but live in fantasy all day, cue to the future, when you grow up, drive to work, wait in jam etc, workload, people, you just want peace, that's all

I did a color drench with Le Lux in high gloss in my bathroom and laundry room. I works in there because they have textured walls. I did high gloss because they were small spaces with limited natural light. I like the reflective quality in there. I use the matte everywhere else, though. But it’s fun to use high gloss if you don’t have smooth walls. Dark gloss plays well with textures.

Good advice re paint. I was trying to save $ by using a semi-gloss paint I had purchased years ago for trim, the wall of the bathroom I am renovating. The walls have a lot of imperfections from original paint prep/job and the flaws I missed when prepping during renovation are magnified. I won’t do that again. I like the sheen because it brightens the windowless room, but I need a more forgiving medium to paint with.

I've been decorating my home in the Orkcore style. The Orkcore look is dominated by red, grey, and brown. Brown leather and (natural or lightly stained)brown wood. Grey concrete, grey stone, grey iron, occasionally grey stained wood(I've found that Aged Barrel Mw283 is the best shade of wood stain for this). Red leather, sedona red stained wood, a bit of red trim, red painted roof. Dark ages war/hunting weapons as decorations. Hide rugs and Navajo rugs. Raw materials and recycled materials such as barnwood. Exposed industrial elements such as large bolts where practical. Pointiness added everywhere it can be done safely, such as pyramid tacks & pointy plants.

Thank you, Nick, for talking about the iridescent trend. I appreciate that you don’t love it, but I adore it!. I didn’t know about it, because I depend on you to introduce me to trends, thank you for that, and I am so excited to see the photos that you, actually Eden, included. It fired up my imagination for my next facelift project in, say, a bathroom. I am not necessarily a fan of coastal, but I do like sparkle and shine, if it’s placed right. Hate the high shine painted walls and ceilings. Way too much frenetic energy. I can’t imagine anyone feeling relaxed and serene in any of those rooms, impressively designed as they are. Love your video posts. Keep going. Merry Christmas from the Niagara Peninsula.

Lol, and have fun painting *over* high gloss paint - you’re gonna go through gallons of primer, otherwise your new paint will peel off in sheets because it has nothing to stick to! (My late husband learned *that* one the hard way … another thing he didn’t listen to me about.)

I think Kidult came from the late Gen X and Elder Millennial... we taught our kids that what you love is what you love and you should own it. We heard "you're too old for that" soooo often, whether it be things or for behavior, that we decided that we were, in fact, not. That has been shown in our clothing, our hair, our jobs and we have passed it down... it was a discarding of the idea that you're ever "too old for that" if it is not hurting anyone or anything. A place for everything, even your weird action figures and that weird affinity for primaries. 😁 High gloss... noooo... fingerprints, dust, scratches, nose prints, dead bugs, dust, grease, a sneeze... dust... everything shows up on anything glossy. This makes as much sense as putting clear acrylic bars on a crib... which they did. Tell me you don't live in your house without telling me. Yikes.

We have high gloss trim throughout our house in the same off white as our flat walls and ceilings.Every couple of months I touch up the walls do to paw prints, animal noses, little kids hands and my husband's habit of leaning on the walls to put on/take off his shoes. One time my husband decided to touch up the flat walls but used the high gloss paint on spots throughout the house. It has been 10 years since he did it and I am still sanding glossy spots off the walls. You paint your walls high gloss you will have glossy walls until you die or move.

Kidult, no thank you, no time for that silliness. But, a swing sounds good for our 4 season porch to stare at the ever changing water. Which brings to mind Zellige tiles. I'm fascinated by them, they're so pretty but honestly, I'd probably get tired of them quickly. That pattern mixing went out (to me) when everyone got over The Prince of Chintz, Mario Buatta!
