Once you do read it and video tape it, they basically watch you for the rest of your life, putting you on a no fly list, preventing you from ever leaving China ever again. But again, who knows - they're seemingly laying low (likely to avoid further harassment, imprisonment, etc) but there doesnt seem to be much info as to what they're up to - hopefully free, seemingly alive, but few details (at least on a surface-level search on the English internet).

That part of this video about suddenly losing content creators out of nowhere, kinda hit me a little hard… A decade ago, me and my friends Jared and Winston started a KZbin channel called “Englewood Productions”. We loved skit comedy and we loved super low budget “so bad it’s good” content, so that was our entire goal. We managed to get five videos made, and it was the most fun we ever had. Pretty much nobody ever actually saw our content (which is still available; the channel is still up) but we barely cared because we had an absolute blast making those videos and had decided we were going to keep doing it for as long as we could. And then Winston (who was the writer) was killed in a massive car accident outside of Charlottesville Virginia. After that it just hurt too much to keep making videos so we stopped and drifted apart. You really are absolutely right when you say that even the most passionate creators can be so dedicated one moment and then just be gone the next.

I think it meant more than that. Day after day, this is what the last days of his life were like! This was as close to his experience as he could give us. We couldn’t experience the other indignities of growing old and dying alone, but he could record the endless hours of loneliness. This series of videos should be the most deeply terrifying of all! This fate awaits so many of us and as I grow older and alone I can easily see this as my own fate. To our children, please don’t forget us! We had successes, failures, loves, and lives! Some of us lived in isolation, but could manage by escaping in a car for a while or by walking into a bar or some such. Imagine all that being taken away as you slowly die alone, bedridden and lonely. Many of us have had a taste of this during this pandemic, remember these days and let them inform the compassion of your futures! Don’t let this be someone else’s fate! When lonely yourself, become the solution to someone else’s loneliness!

I'm Chinese and from what I can tell you, the two journalists were definitely punished in some way. Li seemed like he got a lesser punishment than Chen considering Li actually filmed a video afterward (Which was definitely staged by the government and Li was reading off a script). What I think happened is that Li was forced to make the video or worse things would have happened to him. As for Chen, I just think he is locked up somewhere secret like a government base or something, but not a generic prison, that's for sure. The Chinese government is strong and can pretty much fully control their citizens if they wanted to.

Regarding the story of David - I thought I'd take the time to point out that if you pause the video when the monitor goes black at about 10:10, you will see an apparatus reflected in the screen which I am almost positive is some type of ceiling-mounted patient lift. It would appear that David had lost his mobility before he had begun posting videos, and that he likely remained bedridden until his death. Posting videos to KZbin was likely his way of coping with the situation that he was in, since it was something that he could still be in control of, even while David's control over his own body had become a challenge. Rest in peace, David.
@mommy2libras3 жыл бұрын
Most definitely. Those first videos were either in a nursing home or rehab facility of some sort- the ceiling, ceiling mount tv, high outlet and narrow room with bare walls are dead giveaways. And he wasn't that old- he died in his early 50s when many men are still going to work, taking vacations, some have school aged kids or are partying like frat boys. Maybe he was in an accident or had a disability that made him unable to ,I've at home any more and had to go to the facility and then things took a turn for the worse, which happens. Lots of hours to fill in those places and this was how he did it.

As an LPN who has been specializing in geriatrics for eight years, something tells me David had Parkinson’s or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The moment you brought up the case that’s what came to mind. My Great Uncle passed from Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2006, but to honor David’s memory I won’t go into detail about what it does nor will I speculate any further. I’ve seen it a lot where people at the end of this life begin taking note of every moment and sometimes passing it along, sometimes to the whole world. Technology is wonderful that way. I’m glad there’s a part of David’s life left to share with the rest of us and may he be at rest, with a much better tv where he can see his mention in your video. That’s so sad 😞... My Dad just died two weeks ago. I’m still coming to terms with it. What I’ve learned is you can’t take it all in at once. You have to digest the grief in bits or it will consume you. My Dad has cancer which is awful enough. But my Grandpa had two massive strokes and was bedridden for years. He couldn’t sit up in bed, couldn’t eat on his own, couldn’t communicate but yet he was still conscious. To me that’s a fate worse then death. That’s why I believe in Euthanasia. You shouldn’t keep someone alive that has zero quality of life, unless for some reason they want to stay alive. I hope David and your Grandfather found some peace by watching and recording.

The scariest reality is that Kcriss most likely was forced to trade his journalistic integrity for freedom (and his life), he had absolutely no choice
@SilverYPheonix4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he was actually killed and replaced by someone with similar face and physique. The Chinese government is the Hitler that's still alive, they murdered so many people in the recent years like the guy who find a cure for AIDS and revealed that human cloning and experimentation is alive and well, is actively taking bodies from their homes at midnight hour, killing journalists with a brain and not allowing independence to Hong Kong. Their government needs to be sentenced to death by guillotine.
@Legion8494 жыл бұрын
They killed him there is no way he is alive after quite literally exposing sensitive information . The guy on the screen is most likely a body double made to look and talk like Lee.
@STorchbearer4 жыл бұрын
I dunno, the entire story with kidnapping looks fake as fuck. Chinese government has been in this 'supressing the freedom&spreading propaganda' business for a very long time, yet this story is so hollywood-esque, with car chases and people knocking on the door at night, and then the guy is, like, literally brainwashed to say what government wants him to say... Oh wow, so tragic, so creepy, so totalitarian... Meanwhile the other guy just flat out vanished without a trace, no drama required. Weird, huh?

I once found hundreds of pictures of the same gas station taken over several decades among my late grandfather's things. We were trying to figure out why someone would so obsessively watch a gas station and asked my grandfather's brother. Turns out whenever he bought a new lens for his camera or was experimenting with different settings, my grandfather would take a picture of that gas station. The colours, the writing on the signs and the lights at night were apparently perfect for comparison.
