For all those who enjoyed the original video, I have recently remade the Nickel Plate Road 779 video. I revisited the engine on June 16th on my way north to my hotel. Link is here if you want to see it! Nickel Plate Road 779: Lima's Last Steam Locomotive (400th Video!) (4K) kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3LWfXeOrsyhn6M

Very nice to see that the last "Nickel Plate Road" steam locomotive built has been preserved to indicate the end of an era, the NKP rr "Berkshire" type locomotives were attractive fast freight service engines and a decent amount of these are preserved today.

I have seen 763 and it is in good shape and hopefully will get restored in the near future

I recall a former NKP Engineer calling 763 "The Queen" yrs ago. Apparently she was quite the favorite. I'd love to see her run again.

My grandfather operated the 779 and one or two more of the S-4 Berkshires when he worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad . He preferred the passenger trains over freight . I have his NKP 50 year service pin ... he put in 63 years .
@chendersonrailproductions7046 жыл бұрын
Gary HOLCOMB that is awesome! Hopefully he has gotten to see the 765. Did he ever have have any cool stories from the Nickel Plate Road?
@lillybelle10006 жыл бұрын
Stories ...too many to post . He ran away from home at the age 13 just like his brother did at age 15 to work in train stations between New York and Chicago mostly . His brother gave him all the hints of what to do and not do . The station master at Union Station ( some times the rail- police) kept chasing him( with others- asking passengers for handouts) off the platform . He challenged the Station master to give him a job . ... that's when he got in . ... selling papers on the platform and then on the train following after the cigarette girl . He worked through all the sections of the train - mail boy - coach helper - sleeping coach - conductor - oiler - 2nd and 1st engineer and coach driver , - also certified carpenter and repaired Pullman sleeping coaches and then took over the depot repair shop in Conneaut until he quit . Helped out on the Bessemer for short while bringing the coal trains up the steep grade to Lake Erie . The NKP had been taken over by the Norfolk & Western receiving their 65 year pin .He passed away in 1984 but he probably drove the 756 and others . The 20 x 16 picture of him driving the 779 has been damaged a bit over time - hope to find the negative of it . I inherited this and other rail road stuff from my dad who was a rail road buff all his life also .

I've seen them all and have to say, 779 is in immaculate condition. She's under a weather shed, under constant police protection, and is probably road worthy after a 1472 overhaul. She might not be ready to be revived today, but someday I would expect to see her under steam once again. Lima has done a great job of preserving her. BTW, there is a family of cats living under her, and they get regular feeding and care courtesy of the police department. Good people. Nice community.
@chendersonrailproductions7045 жыл бұрын
That is cool info about the family of cats! But i don't think 779 will return. You would need a group like Fort Wayne willing to do the work on her. Plus, Fort Wayne has taken parts of of her in the past for 765.

Looking at the footage of NKP 757, I remember back in the early 1970's when the 765 looked just like that. Maybe someday the 757 will get her chance at a 2nd life too.

We will have to see for sure!

759 is on display at Steamtown, Scranton, PA. It's in so-so condition, hasn't operated in years. The builder's plates are gone. Or maybe they were removed for safe keeping and are tucked away somewhere, but they are not on the locomotive. Otherwise, it's complete.
@chendersonrailproductions7047 жыл бұрын
Yes its to bad that engine isn't still operating! We were reading about what happened to it. It's too bad it was to big for Steamtowns operations because we would love to see another NKP Berkshire operating.

Is this particular Berkshire different from other NKP Berkshires? I’d like to know.

While I am not denying that wouldn’t be cool. We have the 765 and my understanding is the age of steam roundhouse would love to get 763 operational. So for nickel plate berkshires I think we are good right now. But at the same time see An S3 operate is awesome.

Of the Nickel PLate Berkshire's Remaining there is 6, but the 779 is out of the S-3 class of Berkshires as the other classes were First batch, S-1, S-2 & S-3. I'm sorry if i alluded to the fact there was only 3. There is still a few other Nickel Plate Steam Locomotives around.

I thought the Chesapeake and Ohio 614 was the last steam engine built by Lima at least one of the last steam locomotives built in the United States
@chendersonrailproductions7046 жыл бұрын
It was one of the last but the 779 has that distinction which is the main reason it was saved. And it was all because of the driving rods if I’m not mistaken because an L&N big Emma was being built along side it. Had that driving rod issue not of happened my understanding is the Emma would have been the last one.

Great video 779 I would love to see her run Norfolk Southern ran 1218 an 611 right past my house in Cleveland. I have talked to a very senior citizen who hated the Berkshires because they came though at high speeds and got soot on her cloths she hung out to dry

The ladders up into the cabs of the Berks are, shall I say, not public friendly... very narrow widely spaced footings and awkward grab iron placement. A lawsuit asking to happen in this day and age in my opinon.

Likely to curtail vandalism. I'm curious why the 779 hasnt been picked to restore. Mechanically it can't be in that bad of shape. If I recall it received extensive service not long before retirement.

@chendersonrailproductions7044 жыл бұрын
Max Digger100TB huh really!? That’s interesting. Because I know it also needs a 1472 day inspection as well. I don’t believe beyond cosmetic anyone has ever checked 779’s condition. Plus you have 765 and 1225. And in the next few years you will have 2716. The berkshire market has enough.
@arounddallastx1234 жыл бұрын
Action Set & Go! Railfanning & Other Cool Stuff Yeah but a lot of people are going to be happy when 2716 is fully restored and I think they should donate the 2716 to Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society to be a running mate to NKP 765
@chendersonrailproductions7044 жыл бұрын
@@arounddallastx123 lol, okay WHY should Kentucky Steam give it to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. Did 1996 not happen? Granted it would be cool if they did somehow double head or met or whatever, but they are both in good hands. Fort Wayne already has 3 steam locomotives.

You know i watched this video afterwards and personally i don't think its that bad, and for being our most popular video i don't think to many other people thought it was bad to. I know some of the footage from the Howell Melon Fest, Steam In The Valley and the Open House might have been shaky. But mainly we never use a tripod at a museum/locomotive display.
