She is considered a good singer with a vocal range of A2 - E6 (3 octaves 6 notes ). It was D3- G5 (2 octaves 3 notes) when she started, but she since matured and has trained extensively. However, her octave range is just part of her vocal skill. Her ability to speak passion, sorrow, joy, pain and more into her songs gives them an emotional depth and presence that comes across to the listener in sound and emotion. Your ears hear it, your heart feels it. 'Say Don't Go' is my current favorite that really exemplifies this amazing ability of hers. However, 'Don't Blame Me' is the song that got me first. Heard it on the radio, found out who wrote it, watched Reputation Tour on Netflix and I was hooked for life. It's still on constant repeat in my daily playlist.

When I first heard "Don't Blame Me", I thought Taylor must be covering another artist's song, because it's so soulful. It's another great example of what an incredible songwriter and performer Taylor is. Her singing was extremely clear and good before, and nowadays it's become noticeably better. I think we're still witnessing her ascent.

It is however publicly known the last years that Max Martin demands writing credits on All songs he produces, even when he doesn´t write any part of the song itself, just producing it. That is why not many want to work with him anymore... This also came to the front during Taylor´s "Shake it Off "Copyright lawsuit. He was credited as a songwriter with Taylor on that song, but had to write a letter to court telling them that in actuality he didn´t write the song and therefore was not part of the lawsuit.. So yes, he is a producer and a great one, and has written many songs, but the credits are not always telling the truth when it comes to him.

The tired old criticism about Taylor not being able to sing comes from the worst performance of her life (all artists have a few bad ones, even Freddy Mercury sang off key a few times). It was in 2010 when she won album of the Year for Fearless and sang a duet with Stevie Nicks at the Grammys. Sadly Taylor was incredibly nervous, couldn't hear herself and sang off key while Stevie sounded great. That performance coupled with jealousy and misogyny at her for being (at the time) the youngest female singer-songwriter to win a Grammy for album of the year brought a LOT of harsh criticism form the press, including that she was a bad singer and that she didn't write her own music. Taylor responded by Taylor a lot of vocal lessons and practicing until she became twice as good (or more) at live singing and made her write solo all of her Speak Now album the only one she has done with zero co-writers. In that album she wrote the song Mean about her biggest critic and ended up winning a Grammy for that song.

I have spent some time in a music studio, watching the process of recording a studio album. Such "scratch tracks" while the artist is working out what they want the song to be, is fascinating and one of my favorite parts of the artistic process.

I think you just watched the creation of a masterpiece. To me, this performance of "Don't Blame Me" still gives me chills, and is so powerful, like a compressed "Jesus Christ Superstar", which was a play from the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. My dad listened to the JCS album so many times when I was growing up. Taylor's final product makes me think that she would probably be a great playwright too. And it makes me think about Taylor creating a rock opera album, like "The Wall" by Pink Floyd and "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" by The Who. Folklore and Evermore gave us a taste of Taylor writing albums with intertwined character stories, so I think a Taylor Swift rock opera would be awesome.

She met Joe during the Reputation era. People who like Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion, basically are the kind of people who say Taylor can't sing, and those who just remember baby Taylor. Personally, I don't care for singers who do a lot of runs like Whitney and Celine, no offense to those who love them.
@IvyCowboy Жыл бұрын
I love the person who puts these together for you. The full effect of watching her take this baby seed of a song from just her and a piano to the massive production on tour is mind blowing. A lot of times she has that all in her head from the very beginning - what she wants the production to sound like and how she wants to perform it live. She's involved in every single aspect of writing and producing her music, and it's infuriating to hear people dismiss her talent. She comes up with the concept for every concert too, from the stages to the costumes, etc. Did you notice the whole stage is shaped like a snake? Google #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty if you need context. It's awful. She is the Queen of taking all the nasty shit people say about her and spinning it into gold. This is a top tier song for me, and I still get goosebumps watching this performance. I felt like I was showing this to a friend for the first time cause your reactions were so satisfying. Have you watched I Did Something Bad from the Rep tour yet? Great reaction as always! It's such a joy to witness her genius in real time. For context, this is a Reputation song. She wrote the album after the Kim & Kanye mess that caused her cancellation in 2016. She was dating Calvin Harris (older guy) in 2015 & 16 but felt unappreciated and wanted out. She met Tom Hiddleston (and Joe) at the MET Gala in May 2016 and used Tom (also an older guy) as a rebound/escape from Calvin that summer. After she dropped Tom, she started her relationship with Joe, mostly while in hiding from the media. All love songs on Reputation (and Lover) were written about Joe. There is another Rep song, King of My Heart, where she says "Cause all the boys and their expensive cars, With their Range Rovers and their Jaguars, Never took me quite where you do." I believe those were the cars driven by Calvin and Tom, so it's likely they are the "older guys" she's referencing here as well. In ...Ready for It she describes Joe as "younger than my exes but he act like such a man so", another reference to these two older recent exes at the time, but of course these lines can hearken back to Jake and John as well.

Definitely is a love song to Joe- and also, the "older guys" she references at the start, I don't think are referencing her relationships from many years before this, I think it's directly about Tom Hiddleston who she briefly dated during the summer of 2016 but he was just a 'getaway car' [excellent song of hers]/rebound after Calvin Harris. He was just a plaything to use, but then her feelings for Joe came on STRONG and couldn't be repressed
@Pathfinder197 Жыл бұрын
Always seemed like she was perhaps referencing Calvin Harris as well, given how acrimonious their split seemed to be. That said, some of the meaning Nick took from it might not be off base - It’s not unusual for TS’s songs to have multiple possible interpretations. But definitely true that as on point as songs like LWYMMD and IDSB are, most of the songs on Rep seem to be love songs.

Thanks for your reactions. I love watching the making of the song, prior to the video! Taylor was with Joe Alwyn during her albums... Reputation, Lover, [Covid] Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. After almost 7 years together they broke up, possibly before releasing Midnights, as possibly, You're Losing Me, is about Joe. So Long London, on TTPD is her goodbye song to Joe. Many of the TTPD songs are about her Fortnight+ with MH, except for Alchemy and So High School, which are definitely about Travis Kelce.

Nick, I love your deep dives, thoughtful analysis, and hunger to know more about the artist--instead of treating Taylor Swift's videos as mostly entertainment, like some other reactors do. Because of recall flaws that almost everyone has, it's very difficult to dissect a song in real time and get it completely right. You have surprisingly few bad dissections, and you catch most if not all of them before the end. It's a good thing most lines repeat. 😄 So, Nick, you're doing a great job in these Taylor Swift reaction videos! 💯 And so far, like you said, you're being supplied great Taylor Swift videos. 💯

Buddy, every romantic song in reputation and lover albums are for her bf Joe Alwyn. They have been together for 7 years now.Even though we thought reputation album was her revenge album, it was also a lover letter for Joe. Moreover she dedicated the whole Lover album for him. And some other songs in her later albums like willow, invisible string, Paris, sweet nothing, peace, mastermind etc. And they even co wrote some songs in the albums folklore, evermore and midnights. He uses the name William Bowery and Taylor revealed that. They wrote champagne problems, Exile, sweet nothing, coney Island, etc which are the most iconic and heartbreaking songs in the entire album. They said it was fun to write heartbreaking songs while in a happy relationship. Now Joe is a Grammy winner. Everyone say they broke up on last month but I'm in delusion. I'm late to the party, I know, but I wanted to tell you what this song is really about. You were on the right track, but this goes deeper. Essentially, this song (and whole album called reputation) was written when a ton of people went from loving her to hating her, just like that. They said she called herself the victim too much, and that she was actually the one manipulating all those men she dated before, which she wasn't. She got fed up and wrote this album about the way people perceive artists, and how one untrue rumor can change the way everybody looks at you. So the whole album has this overdone evil vibe to throw everyone off, and this song in particular in my opinion is so so good because she's playing the role everyone said she was playing at the time, when she wasn't. Saying, "don't blame me, love made me crazy" since everyone was calling her crazy, and calling love her "drug," since everyone said she wrote too many breakup songs. It's a really overdramatic song playing the role of a manipulative snake, which is basically what everyone called her before she was inspired to write this album and create the 'reputation' era. If you want to learn more about this, watch her documentary "Miss Americana" on Netflix. She talks a lot about what went into writing this album. Anyways, that's enough of a rant from me, but I wanted to try and explain more of the song to you so you get the context of how brilliant this song actually is.

People judge live performing as if some of the best female vocalists of the 70's-2000's didn't absolutely wreck their vocal chords from the sheer amount of touring they did. Mariah Carey talked about how touring ruined her voice and it has never ever been the same. Being a strong vocalist or a clear and pitch perfect vocalist was never really a thing until autotune was discovered. It's okay to have character in your voice and to not be perfect all the time!

This to me, is her unapologetically saying that love is her drug of choice - and that if you don’t feel a little nuts, maybe it isn’t love. My drug is my baby, I’ll be using for the rest of my life …. Baby is a guy …. Using for the rest of her life. That’s the message. When he’s loving her, she gets so high. Has nothing to do with actual drugs.

I'm a swiftie and I agree that Taylor is a very good to great singer, but I readily admit that Taylor doesn't seem to be a "vocalist". I think a few great vocalists are Patsy Cline, Pat Benatar, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Ariana Grande, but many vocalists seem to ruin songs by showing off their voice meaninglessly, à la Mariah Carey's signature high pitched vocal climbs. I can't listen to Mariah anymore. Taylor's singing is more than good enough. I love many songs by many artists, but overall, I'd rather listen to Taylor Swift's catalog of songs than anyone else's.
