I have never seen an artist that is so good and so bad at the same time. He can rap fast, he has original ideas when it comes to some of his lyrics, and he seems self aware enough to give it humor. The problem is that he exploits the self awareness too much to the point that it becomes overdone, he doesn’t seem to have a style as of yet, and that can be a good thing when you’re not dealing for fame because you can do whatever you want and experiment, or if you have established yourself as an experimental artist, or even a musician that focuses more on humor (like weird Al yankovik), but the issue here is that he does have a target audience, a level of fame, a reputation, and an expectation, so there is very little room for experimentation unless he was a really really really good musician that knew how to accommodate the expectations with experimentation. He just seems to have too many ideas and ends up mixing too many together and he is not good enough of a musician to know how to execute it the right way.

I always took "I live a good life and pretend that it blows" as sometimes people themselves feel like they are faking being depressed because they have lived relatively good lives. But you can have everything in the world and still have feelings of depression. I know sometimes when my life is going good and I still have those voices in my head saying not so great things I'm like " Maybe I'm just looking for attention, my lives great I can't be depressed" but I am because your emotions don't always reflect your life
@potatoflow5363 жыл бұрын
I took it differently, largely colored by my own history: people will accuse you of this, like you're faking depression for clout or something. I interpreted it the same way and I actually found it so frustrating listening to them try and analyse it! im gonna try to explain the whole “pretend my life is bad when its actually good” bit, as someone with depression. i feel this a lot. this can follow feelings of self-loathing and hatred. its this weird thing where your brain convinces you your life is better than it is to try and make you feel guilty for being depressed, in a “you have everything so you dont deserve to feel sorry for yourself” kind of way. thus leading to more intense depressive feelings, which feeds into an endless loop of doubt and questioning whether the reality of your living situation is ideal or poor. in essence, its your own depressed, self-hating brain guilting you into thinking you arent worthy of having depression in the first place.

The big issue I have is with the messages he is sending, particularly the stuff about how hating yourself (and talking about it constantly) is an appropriate response to your life not being perfect, and stuff like blaming other people, mostly women, for reason he can’t get what he wants.

I just wanted to add that on top of just being shit songs, they’re super damaging. As a child I developed very bad chronic depression, and as a teen I was a scotty fan. I remember wondering if I should talk to my psych about going onto meds but remembered the part in his song about how they didn’t work. I ended up delaying going onto my meds for a few years because of this, and without the medicine I needed I ended up nearly being hospitalised multiple times, put myself in dangerous situations, and suffered from extreme suicidal ideation as well as developing a dissociative disorder as a way for my brain to cope. All because his fucking song said meds wouldn’t work. Because I didn’t get the treatment I needed, my brain wasn’t able to develop properly and I now have borderline personality disorder, but was so close to not developing this disorder that had I gotten help before my brain finished maturing, I might not have it. But no, Scotty said antidepressants don’t work and now I have to suffer with bursts of mania and minor delusions. Having been on meds for a number of years now, I can say without a doubt it helps. It takes a while to find the right fix but it works. Not I’m at a point where I’m planning to buy a house and have a kid soon when before I struggled to imagine myself surviving until the end of the week. Update in case anyone worried or was interested: I am safe, and after years of therapy and thriving. The past year since I first wrote this I’ve taken massive strives in my mental and physical health. Doing so well, in fact, that I am reducing my med dosage, working a full time job that I love, and feel secure enough to say my severe depression is in remission. I will always have bad days, but I can now appreciate the good. Life is good and I never thought I’d reach this point. Keep holding on everyone, even if you’re barely holding on by your fingertips, keep pushing through because I promise you, it’s not forever, and you won’t see how fantastic it could be if you let go now. I love you.

@@m1nshr00m if you have suggestions i'm open to them, but honestly i just don't have the energy to find another song with the exact same vibe. plus i like the corniness, it's unabashedly goofy whereas most songs with a similar subject matter just aren't fun because they're so depressing to listen to lol
