I think what Scotty was *trying* to say with My Life Sucks, was that his life is good and he has every reason to be happy, but he's still got depression and feels like he needs to *pretend* that his life sucks, because he doesn't want to acknowledge that people with good lives can *still* suffer from depression. I think this is actually a relatable topic to a lot of people, but he does such a piss poor fucking job at getting that message across that the song is just complete and absolute trash

I have never seen an artist that is so good and so bad at the same time. He can rap fast, he has original ideas when it comes to some of his lyrics, and he seems self aware enough to give it humor. The problem is that he exploits the self awareness too much to the point that it becomes overdone, he doesn’t seem to have a style as of yet, and that can be a good thing when you’re not dealing for fame because you can do whatever you want and experiment, or if you have established yourself as an experimental artist, or even a musician that focuses more on humor (like weird Al yankovik), but the issue here is that he does have a target audience, a level of fame, a reputation, and an expectation, so there is very little room for experimentation unless he was a really really really good musician that knew how to accommodate the expectations with experimentation. He just seems to have too many ideas and ends up mixing too many together and he is not good enough of a musician to know how to execute it the right way.

I started taking meds when I was 15 and I’ve been on almost all of them for every mental illness. My most recent one was olanzapine and after a few months it completely stopped working no matter how much the dose is increased. I’m currently just taking vyvanse for my ADD and ignoring everything else the doctor gives me. I feel like it’s all either bs or I’m just a broken human because I’ve been diagnosed with literally so much different shit to the point where doctors just gave me the title of “unspecified mood disorder” idk what to do anymore man. “My neighbors called the cops last night because I was crying” that dude probably does have depression, but isn’t aware of how to communicate with the audience. When I heard that line I felt so triggered because something similar happened to me almost two months ago. TW I was about to kms, when a neighbor saw me and called my mother. She entered my room running and dragged me out of the window. I immediately started crying and screaming and at times even laughing because all of those were emotions that I had repressed on my chest for like a year. I’m 18 but I’ve been taking psychiatric medication since I was 14. I don’t feel ashamed, I want people to stop calling mentally ill people slurs, and, as for me, to stop bullying me, stop pointing at me for being the “Borderline” or “The one with the scar arms”. However, if anybody has, I don't believe that the hallucination was a result of the heroin itself. I was in active addiction for 12+ years and the only hallucinations I've experienced were from actual hallucinogenics. So, there's one reason they sounded ignorant. I always took "I live a good life and pretend that it blows" as sometimes people themselves feel like they are faking being depressed because they have lived relatively good lives. But you can have everything in the world and still have feelings of depression. I know sometimes when my life is going good and I still have those voices in my head saying not so great things I'm like " Maybe I'm just looking for attention, my lives great I can't be depressed" but I am because your emotions don't always reflect your life

I took it differently, largely colored by my own history: people will accuse you of this, like you're faking depression for clout or something. It’s something you’re told right away and why it’s important to have appointments with your psychiatrist every 2/3 months (that’s about how long it takes too see full effects for most medications). im gonna try to explain the whole “pretend my life is bad when its actually good” bit, as someone with depression. i feel this a lot. this can follow feelings of self-loathing and hatred. its this weird thing where your brain convinces you your life is better than it is to try and make you feel guilty for being depressed, in a “you have everything so you dont deserve to feel sorry for yourself” kind of way. thus leading to more intense depressive feelings, which feeds into an endless loop of doubt and questioning whether the reality of your living situation is ideal or poor. in essence, its your own depressed, self-hating brain guilting you into thinking you arent worthy of having depression in the first place.

Genuine question: why do all of his songs have at least 5 different music styles in each song? It would make more sense if like every song was a different genre but it’s not even that he just makes a mashup with the most unmashable genres. I just want to know if he has an explanation as to why he has subjected his audience (and those unfortunate enough to stumble upon the videos) to this?

I think that the mix of styles is the only positive thing about his music. Maybe it’s my ADHD but I like variety. Some parts are too much but I think if an artist I actually enjoy did this, I wouldn’t mind. The big issue I have is with the messages he is sending, particularly the stuff about how hating yourself (and talking about it constantly) is an appropriate response to your life not being perfect, and stuff like blaming other people, mostly women, for reason he can’t get what he wants.

that's what i was wondering too. i've heard a few artists i like do this a few times but they executed it well and also they were from artists i liked lol. music is hard to make and you need to have some understanding on it and i feel like he was just putting random music samples together and thought it sounded good and just went with it. it's something i would tend to do when i attempted to make music cause idk enough about making it to execute it well enough

He's the minion meme of moody music. It's too bizarre and frustrating to signal an empathetic response, but it sounds like it *could* be funny at first... and then you realize he's *serious* and you're meant to agree, not laugh.... which kinda just makes it sad.

I just wanted to add that on top of just being shit songs, they’re super damaging. As a child I developed very bad chronic depression, and as a teen I was a scotty fan. I remember wondering if I should talk to my psych about going onto meds but remembered the part in his song about how they didn’t work. I ended up delaying going onto my meds for a few years because of this, and without the medicine I needed I ended up nearly being hospitalised multiple times, put myself in dangerous situations, and suffered from extreme suicidal ideation as well as developing a dissociative disorder as a way for my brain to cope. All because his fucking song said meds wouldn’t work. Because I didn’t get the treatment I needed, my brain wasn’t able to develop properly and I now have borderline personality disorder, but was so close to not developing this disorder that had I gotten help before my brain finished maturing, I might not have it. But no, Scotty said antidepressants don’t work and now I have to suffer with bursts of mania and minor delusions. Having been on meds for a number of years now, I can say without a doubt it helps. It takes a while to find the right fix but it works. Not I’m at a point where I’m planning to buy a house and have a kid soon when before I struggled to imagine myself surviving until the end of the week. Update in case anyone worried or was interested: I am safe, and after years of therapy and thriving. The past year since I first wrote this I’ve taken massive strives in my mental and physical health. Doing so well, in fact, that I am reducing my med dosage, working a full time job that I love, and feel secure enough to say my severe depression is in remission. I will always have bad days, but I can now appreciate the good. Life is good and I never thought I’d reach this point. Keep holding on everyone, even if you’re barely holding on by your fingertips, keep pushing through because I promise you, it’s not forever, and you won’t see how fantastic it could be if you let go now. I love you.

I had a family member tell me that her psych meds made her feel numb or more suicidal and she said I should never go on them. 15 years later, I can't imagine being without my current meds. They've been so effective that I haven't started a new one in 3 years.

@@sophiesleeps12 No problem! I started trying meds late 2017, so I was 15, but I was getting prescribed through my GP rather than a psychiatrist who knows more about medication so I was swapping meds constantly and not much was working enough. I started what I’m currently on at 100mg in 2019 when I was 17, and since then it’s been upped to 300mg (last changed last year when I was 18) and it’s working like a literal blessing :)

Regardless of Scotty's musical ability, having suffered from depression for over a decade, I can relate to the lines depicting how life isn't "bad" but still feeling bad because of depression. You can be young, rich, hot, etc. and still feel the effects of depression which ultimately makes you sad, even if you don't have any reason to be. I think of Robin Williams in this case. Incredibly talented, rich, wonderful, and still depressed.

oh my god this music is insufferable to me, as someone with depression. it just seems to trivialize the experiences of depressed/socially anxious people and turn it into "quirky relatable" content. like... having mental illness is not quirky or relatable, it fucking sucks lol. and i get how this music could maybe help someone cope, it's not actively harmful, but something about it rubs me the wrong way. it doesn't feel genuine at all. its like he read a bunch of self-deprecating humor posts on tumblr and turned them into songs
