Do Rhode Islanders know a hundred ways to cook a clam?
Does Rhode Island have the worst potholes in the country?
And do all Rhodies have an inferiority complex?
We’ll answer those questions and more! So grab your coffee milk and/or your Del’s and take a seat. We’re going to unbox the state of Rhode Island!
Wow look at the beautiful sandy beaches. And the crystal clear water. Who wouldn’t want to live there. Looks so peaceful and comforting. Huh that’s not Rhode Island. THIS is Rhode Island. 1 hr in A much less warm and comforting place, it’s located way up here in New England, and in case you didn’t know, it’s not even an island. Although, as we’ll see later, it DOES have islands within its borders.
A place with funny accents and towns with hard to say names, Rhode Island has a lot going on within it’s teeny little borders. A lot of people don’t even know where Rhode Island IS.
This is the smallest state in the country - it’s only about 1,200 square miles. It’s 48 miles tall and only 37 miles wide. It’s about the same size as Yosemite National Park. In fact, the city of Anchorage Alaska is bigger than the whole state of Rhode Island, and you could fit 552 Rhode Islands inside of Alaska. You can drive across this whole state in about 40 minutes. For many Americans, it takes 40 minutes just to get to the HIGHWAY en route to work in the morning.
But to get a complete understanding of Little Rhody, you have to look at this entire state from a higher level, and then learn about each region’s various differences.
This is Rhode Island.

I live in Rhode Island and currently in the nightmarish state of Calirado for business. I'm going back. Smithfield, Portsmouth, Middletown, Narragansett, Cumberland, North Providence, Tiverton and Newport are all pretty charming. There's several others to name, but that's just a handful.

I was born and raised in Rhode Island and growing up I always thought it was my environment that sucked (Rhode Island) but as I got older and traveled, I realized that I live in such an incredibly beautiful state that offers so much in such a small area. Also a learning lesson I learned in life is that where ever you move or travel to that you take yourself with you so it’s not necessarily the environment that you are in it’s your attitude and frame of mind.

The state should have offered RP a low interest loan if not a grant. The Pawsox are gone. America's Cup yacht race...gone. Farmers are bailing out; they're selling their land and too many buildings are going up and spreading out: more plats and strip malls where their once was open land. Narragansett has a fence up and charge for what once was free. And now the pristine Scituate Reservoir is shredded. Our beloved state is becoming 'Potterville'. But that narrative crack about feeding the lower class in Providence is an ugly miss understanding! My state would not allow returning African American citizens the opportunity to receive veterans benefit after WW II.. I'm 66 years old, my white father was offered what was denied to his fellows. Becoming middle class was a matter of government backed assurances and not merely a generalized 'vague hope' and "distant possibilities' for subsequent generations. RI is my home but we could do better...

I'm from RI born & raised. I grew up in Central Falls, lived in Pawtucket, Providence & Cranston. RI is really what you make it. If you live a low key drama free lifestyle & know the right people, it's really not all that bad. Only downsides are the taxes/cost of living can get pricey, corrupt politicians, brutal cold winters, & sometimes a lot of hate/resentment from people who think you're doing too good or better than them.

I’ve been in and around RI my whole life. It’s a bizarre but loveable state. Everyone loves to hate the corruption but it’s just accepted as the norm that will never change. Many people want to move out of the state (usually to Florida) but either never do or almost always come back after a few years. The winters suck, the taxes are high, the roads are a mess and the drivers are terrible. People hate driving more than 20-30 mins from home. Boston is less than an hour away but might as well be half way across the country. Dunkins on every corner (sometimes literally.) LOTS of Portuguese and Italian heritage. Don’t forget Cardi’s, Haven Brothers, Twin Oaks, the Superman Building, the Stuck-Up Bridge, Federal Hill and Thayer Street. All in all there are a lot of great things to love about the smallest state in the Union.

Thanks for the great video, Nick. I lived in RI during the early 1980s. Overall, I greatly enjoyed the experience, but as a young professional person coming from the west coast, there were many things that struck me immediately. Some of these have likely remained unchanged over the past 35-40 years. Here are a few of them. 1. There is an incredible amount of colonial history everywhere. Beautiful architecture. 2. The accents and everyday vocabulary of some RI natives were baffling at first, but I eventually got used to them. 3. Some people seemingly had little knowledge or interest in the world beyond their immediate surroundings. 4. Being from the west, I was seemingly considered a "barbarian" by some, regardless of education, affluence, etc. 5. Driving on busy streets without painted lines to delineate lanes, which was the norm, can be terrifying. Some locals thought my concern was hilarious. 6. Some of the freshest and best seafood in the world, at decent prices. Dining out was wonderful. 7. Things I often thought were decaying and decrepit were often considered quaint and lovely by many. 8. Handsome colonial-style houses were the norm. Anything else might be an unsaleable white elephant. 9. Many rusted-out cars, caused by salted roads in the wintertime. 10. Horseshoe crabs all over the very crowded summer beaches. 11. A strong upper-class "yacht" vibe in some places, like Newport. 12. Distinctly ethnic parts of town in the larger cities, especially Providence. 13. Ice skating on frozen ponds in the winter. 14. Sometimes cool reception of people from outside the 5 New England states (i.e. RI, MA, ME, NH, and VT). 15. Seemingly abrupt and impolite behavior of some people on the street, in shops, etc. 16. Burning leaves in the fall could make the air hard to breathe. 17. Lots of natural stone such as granite and slate used everywhere, rather than concrete. Street curbs, walkways, etc. Beautiful. 18. Slate roofs on many older houses, which could last almost forever. Beautiful. 19. Strange requirement to hire a lawyer to buy or sell a house. 20. Mysterious stone walls in the forests, left behind by 19th-century farmers who abandoned their fields and moved west. 21. Many common terms seemed strange. e.g. A "cabinet" might be a milkshake, and the "cleansers" were dry cleaners. 22. Extreme humidity and mosquitos in late summer and fall. Screened porches and air conditioning were important. 23. Little street crime in Providence neighborhoods with alleged Mafia residents, who allegedly terrorized the thugs. 24. Strong Ivy League alumni presence in many regional businesses.

Very interesting and informative video. I always learn something new about my home state. Interesting to see the varying perspectives of those who live in RI. Sometimes you can tell where someone may be from by their comment. RI moves at the perfect pace for me. Although a small state, generally speaking, if you're from the urban areas, outside of going to the beaches and state University, most don't venture into other areas. Its a culture shock to them. Some can't relate to what it is that makes someone a true "Rhode Islander". Its just not part of their experience as much as it might be for others in the surrounding suburban and rural areas. Some of this is due to how diverse PVD and other cities are. I grew up around all Cape Verdeans, Dominicans, Ghanaians, Haitians, Indigenous Peoples(Natives), Nigerians, Liberians, Puerto Ricans, Southeast Asians, etc. I've been immersed in diversity my whole life in RI which isn't marketed or rarely covered. The accents and way of talking are different depending on varying neighborhoods in PVD as well - West End, Washington Park/South Side, Smith Hill, East Side, and many others have a unique distinction in they way they talk despite being from the same city. There is that mix of Brooklyn and Boston accent that serves as the foundation of our accents tho. But I loved coffee milk and still enjoy a good clam chowder and clam cakes!

I've lived here my whole live and while I'm not as well travelled as I'd like, I have seen some of the country/world and it truly is a place that has a lot going for it. There is no serious traffic on the high way in RI. Its a 10 minute or less drive to almost anything. The views of the Ocean are fantastic. The fried squid is delicious. Federal Hill restaurants are fantastic. Newport RI is beautiful, and Jay Leno owns a mansion there. HP Lovecraft hung out in Providence back in the day and so did Edger Allen Poe. Home of Brown University. Taylor Swift lives in Watch Hill of Westerly, RI part of the year. Thanks for showing that state pride I have seen in Rhode Island over the years--and which is certainly well-deserved! HP Lovecraft is said to have referred to Jenckes Street in Providence as "The Vertical Street." If you've ever been there, then you know why. . . . I love how there are a bunch of stones placed at the bottom of Jenckes Street, on Benefit Street. They were originally placed there to stop horses from crashing into the house on the other side of them. Because the street is so steep, it was hard for horses pulling carriages down it to stop quickly enough. It's just one example of the seemingly endless historical treasures in our state. Love it!
