Nick and Lex 🥰 thank you so much for this gift it’s like Christmas all over again! Pat and Lyle composed the music and David wrote the lyrics the result is pure beauty. You guys need to listen to the first five tracks and to the last track too. I believe this is the only time that they collaborated. 🙏🏽✌🏽♥️

This was the PMG only top 40 hit- I have seen this track performed on the "We Live Here" tour in ATX in the mid 90's. The soundtrack features original composed music and tracks from "Offramp". The film is based on a true story and has amazing performances by Timothy Hutton and a young Sean Penn. PM was also collaborating with Jerry Goldsmith on the "Under Fire" soundtrack. Their music can be very soundtrack'ish. David Bowie delivers an amazing vocal performance, a great collaboration by 2 of my all time favorites : PMG and DB

In Metheny's own words, his memories of working with Bowie. Written after Bowie's death in 2016. The thing which always "gets me" is that ALL the backing vocals are done by Bowie...for decades I thought it was female singers. “Working with David Bowie on “This Is Not America” was an incredible experience. I had written the song as the main theme for the score for “The Falcon and the Snowman”. After traveling to Mexico City where the filming was taking place and watching Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton do a few scenes, I went back to my room and the whole piece came very quickly. Later while in London recording the score, John Schlesinger, the director of the film, suggested a collaboration with David Bowie for a version of the song to go over the final credits. David came to a screening of the film and I sat near him as he saw the picture for the first time. He had a yellow legal pad on his lap and was writing constantly. At the end of the film, he had a list of maybe 30 (brilliant) song titles that he had thought of while watching. One of them was “This Is Not America”, a line from the film. David took the music with him and a month later the core of my band and I traveled to Montreux, Switzerland to join him in his studio to record the single. In the meantime, David had taken my original demo, added an additional drum machine part and while keeping the form and big chunks of the original melody, added an additional vocal line on top of the “A” section to which he had written those haunting and evocative lyrics. To me his words make “This is Not America” one of the greatest protest songs ever. Watching him do his vocal was something I will never forget. I can only say that it was masterful - kind of like the feeling I have had whenever I have had the chance to be around a great jazz musician who carried a one-of-a-kind type presence that filled every note that came out of them. He was really fast. He asked if any of us could sing (we couldn’t/can’t!), so he did all the background vocals himself, kind of transforming into what seemed to be two or three different people as he did each part. Throughout the whole experience, he was kind, generous and contrary to so many aspects of his various public personas, very normal and straight-ahead. My main impression was that he was extremely professional about everything that he did, that he really wanted to do a great job with the tune and to get a great singing performance and track down as quickly and spontaneously as possible. And it doesn’t surprise me at all that his last recordings includes some of the best contemporary jazz players in New York, especially the fantastic Donny McCaslin. During our time together he expressed a real appreciation and knowledge of this music and saxophone players in particular. He carried the kind of broad view of music and art that was inspiring to me as a collaborator and a fan. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to be around him.”

And C) most of all, privileged enough to have David step into my limousine by mistake. I told him that it was a pleasure to see him in person and that I wish he were my passenger. He said that it was one of sweetest things anyone ever told him. God bless you, David Bowie

The title of the song is a line from the film. Bowie watched the movie and scribbled down ideas for lyrics from the script and then turned them into the song. He even asked Pat and Lyle to sing on the soundtrack; they stuck with their instruments but Bowie created lots of characters in his vocal performance.. Just listen to how many timbres he creates. Pat said he worked fast and instinctively and compared the experience to working with a jazz musician. Pat played an acoustic version of this in his live shows and when I heard him in London just after Bowie died, I swear there wasn't a dry eye in the house when he played this as an encore

I believe Pat holds the record for the most Grammy's in different category's. I had seen him and the PMG group starting in 85 with "First Circle". Pat and Lyle are one of the best collaborate musical duos in past century. Lyle is very understated but a monster on his Keys- they are both equally virtuosos and then when teamed with Bowie, well the rest is history! I can't say enough about all of them, total masters- I love this track so much. Thank you Nick n Lex

Did you ever see the film? It was one of the original Cold War (Tom Clancy'ish) dramas of the 80's. The Soundtrack made the film, but the story and performances were equally amazing. Been a Metheny and Bowie fan since the mid/ late 70's. Very unique and stylistic collaboration, a very good fit- Bowie is so versatile he can in chameleon like fashion blend into all kinds of musical styles. I had never seen Bowie live, but have seen PMG quite a few times. They are even better live than on record. Missing both David Bowie and Lyle Mays... Totally Love them

I love his 2000s and 2010s stuff. Blackstar is a masterpiece. Lazarus was the last song he recorded, against the advice of his doctor, he stares straight into death: "oh, I'll be free. I hope you're doing 20 minute sessions with ice packs and not heat. I didn't know it, but hot baths is what aggravated my back. Now that I no longer take hot baths, my back no longer hurts, but it's also the Wim Hof Method that has really helped it to heal. Bowie's voice was deeper and he was much more articulated as a singer from 1976 onwards it's not an 80s thing. problem is most people only have heard a couple of his songs from the early 70s so they only know that way of singing that high voice and don't realize how good and eclectic he was as a singer.
