This album is pre-Collins and Hackett and is a winner from start to finish, consider for a moment that this album was recorded in June-July 1970 and all but the Drummer was about 20 years old, John Mayhew - the drummer was 23 - he replaced an earlier drummer John Silver who replaced an even earlier drummer Chris Stewart. Anthony (Ant) Phillips is a brilliant guitarist, he has a number of solo works, you will hear both remnants of Genesis in his solo works - members of Genesis participated in some of them and remnants of his music in subsequent Genesis albums.

It’s interesting for me to watch your reactions, I listened to this album for the first time 46 years ago when I was 9 years old. Funny that you mention Steve - as you know by now he and Phil weren’t in the band yet when Genesis recorded Trespass. Anthony “Ant” Phillips was their lead guitarist and one of the founding members. But he suffered from extreme stage fright which made him leave the band. Anyway, he’s a very active and productive musician, you’d be surprised about his comprehensive catalogue of music. The drummer was John Mayhew who was replaced by Phil after Trespass and then vanished for several decades until the early 2000s. Genesis haven’t played the whole song live for ages, but they included an iconic part of it in their live performances of I Know What I Like, even on their very last tour ever which ended in March 2022. Here’s I Know What I Like from 2007, performed in front of more than half a million fans at Circus Maximus in Rome. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aauUoptpl9Jqr7c

On guitar is the founding member Anthony "Ant" Phillips, who had the most musical influence in early Genesis. Sadly he left the band due to his severe stage fright. This meant almost the end of Genesis at that early stage. Check out his extensive solo work like "The Geese and the Ghost", "Wise after the Event" or the "Private Parts and Pieces" serie. You must also listen to White Mountain (it's like Game of Thrones as a 7 minute song) and The Knife from Trespass.

This was pre Steve Hackett, pre Phil Collins Genesis. That was original Genesis guitarist and co-founder Anthony Phillips playing the gorgeous 12-strings, along with Mike Rutherford. Very beautiful sound they created. And I believe that was John Mayhew on the drums. Phil Collins was actually their 3rd or possibly even 4th drummer; John Silver was another one. Sounds like the name of a pirate. Long John Silver. 😄

The line: "And will I wait for ever, beside the silent mirror And fish for bitter minnows amongst the weeds And slimy water" Always makes me think of Gollum by the pond before he's captured in the movie - don't know if the LOTR inspired this song...but I wouldn't be surprised. Tony Banks keyboard work on this track was superb.
@jeorge612 жыл бұрын
Lol, yeah always makes me think of Gollum as well
@richardfurness75562 жыл бұрын
Peter was adept at weaving strands from different stories into his lyrics. I think Gollum is lurking somewhere in this song, but the intro seems to be from the 'sole survivor of a nuclear apocalypse' stable, and the lines you quoted were almost certainly inspired by the Fisher King from T S Eliot's The Waste Land, a poem Peter would revisit for The Cinema Show.
@psicodrummer7658 Жыл бұрын
The vocal part begining at these lines and later on is one of the examples of why I love Peter Gabriel so much as a vocalist. There will be technically better singers, but only a few transmit me emotions the way he does. Sorry Phil, you have a nice voice, but I stay with Peter for the reasons above

The descending organ solo by Tony is achieved by switching off the Hammond to stand by and holding down the keys they just keep going but lose pitch but turned back on they return to the original pitch. It was very prevalent in the late 60’s early 70’s. Twilight Ale House which was never on an album really uses the effect much more intensely.

This album is the founding stone of what would become Genesis. Despite the absence of Hackett and Collins who will arrive a few months later, this opus bears the stamp of talent. Ant Philipps is the biggest influence in this album and the band almost broke up when he left. Luckily for all of us, that wasn't the case. Philipps' solo output is brilliant and can be heard on Mike Rutherford's debut solo album as well as Camel's "The Single Factor" album. There's a wonderful universe to discover with these guys.

I’m 62 years old and have been listening to Genesis since I was about 16 and I never really tired of their music. And so I really love seeing other people especially younger folks taking the time to listen to this music, and I love watching their faces and reactions to this phenomenal once in a lifetime band.This was genesis’s first album of any consequence. I wouldn’t recommend listening to the first album, but this album (their second )still had Anthony Phillips (lead and rhythm guitar)of the original founding members on it. Steve Hackett was not yet in the band, he would join the following year 1971 as did Phil Collins, also joining in 1971. One of the main reasons Anthony Phillips quit the band was because he had developed stage fright and they were starting to play more gigs. so anyway that was not Steve Hackett playing those guitar riffs. i’m surprised you don’t read more of the linear notes or other information about this band etc. and I wanted to mention that Peter Gabriel left in 1975 after the Lamb lies down on Broadway, mainly because his wife was pregnant and she was having some complications. The band was just starting to pick up a little steam in the states and Gabriel wanted to take some time off to be with his wife and the other members of Genesis were not very understanding which created tension between Gabriel and the other members. Although this wasn’t the only reason he left, it was the main reason that caused the initial upheaval within the band. Anyway I do enjoy watching people such as yourself enjoy the greatest music ever made by bands like this and others such as yes,ELP, King Crimson and others of that ilk. 🍻

It wasn't before 1987 that I - by accident - discovered Genesis' early progressive albums which I found (for the most part) very enjoyable, whereas what I had heard from them on the radio from the late 70ies onwards never appealed to me. As regards "Trespass", my overall favourite song is definitely "The Knife", followed by "White Mountain". Reading through the other comments, it seems "The Knife" got mentioned the most. Thinking about it, it might be their overall most aggressive/heaviest song, though "The Musical Box" (my favourite on "Nursery Cryme") and "Dancing with the Moonlit Night" feature some aggressive parts as well.

Wow, brilliant! Great reaction - thanks for choosing what IMO has to be the best early Genesis song, and one of my all-time Genesis favourites! So few others ever consider the so-underrated IMO "Trespass", and then usually go for the heavier "The Knife" - Tony Banks writing somewhat in the style of and a tribute to "The Nice" (hence the play on words in the song title). But "Stagnation" is far more indicative of the direction of travel, developed then when Steve and Pete joined. How things would have developed had Ant Philips stayed...we'll never know.

It brought back a lot of memories, such as hearing 'Foxtrot' for the first time, going crazy with delight and rushing out to buy 'Trespass' and 'Nursery Chryme' so that I could catch up with their prog albums. I never bought their first album, 'From Genesis To Revelation', as I don't think it lives with the rest of their canon. This track has certainly stood the test of time, Anthony Phillips' more pastoral approach was a huge influence; John Mayhew on drums not so much. Nice one Greybeard, thanks NicknLex!

Grey Beard is the best! So glad you like Genesis and this is a good choice. I only recently got turned on to Trespass (don't bother doing anything from their first album). Anthony Phillips was still in the band at this point. Steve Hackett joined for the next album. This is the first Genesis album I band still one of my favourites. 👍🏻😊

Really beautiful. After buying Trick of the Tail, Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, in that order, I found their 1st album and bought it. Didn't like it one bit, and never bought another one. I have a lot of catching up to do! Thanks, Greybeard, Nick and Lex, for showing me the way back to early Genesis!❤️🎵❤️

it was not Steve it was Anthony Phillips, Steve didn't join until Anthony left...Actually after this album, he used to get massive stage fright and could not continue..

Well, this is for sure one of the underrated pearls in the Genesis catalogue. I have to admit, that I oversaw it. It's really necessary only to listen and do nothing else ... plus headphones😃🤘

Hello you two (amongst my favorites btw) thanks for going into very early Genesis. I just want to correct you. This was the last album with the original guitar player and drummer. John Mayhew the drummer and Anthony Phillips left after this record since the band wasn't really going anywhere at this time. Nursery Cryme (the abum that follows Trespass) is the first with Steve & Phil and you can hear it. With Phil in the band he brought a jazz fusion vibe to the music (Brand X DNA) and you'll eventually notice the difference. Phil and Steve's joining the band moved the band forward to more complex time signatures and compositions. Trespass laid the groundwork (as you mentioned) for what was to follow. As the both of you get more familiar with the earlier stuff you'll heard the difference, Phil and Steve have very recognizable sounds and you'll develop the ear for it. PS: Nursery Cryme has some of their best early works as well. If you read my Patreon post from Revolver it mentions the song Return of The Giant Hogweed where Steve Hackett introduces the rock world to the art of finger tapping, not Mr. Van Halen who is a legend in his own right. Ok as usual keep up the great work & keep loving each other. Also Alexia hope your back issues get solved we miss you and Nick as a couple so we need more of you together, it makes the world a happier place 🙂

Pre-Hackett, pre-Collins, with their original guitarist Ant Phillips who was a MAJOR influence on their sound. The 12-string stuff on later albums can largely be traced back to him (he continued working in that style on his solo albums after he left Genesis.) It's hard to imagine how ridiculously young they were at this time. Most of the music on Trespass was the result of developing the kind of stuff that was written for their debut when they were still high school kids (and the music reflected that adolescence.) They took a big leap forward on their next album, both as writers and also as players with Steve and Phil on board. Listen to "The Knife" next. It's very different. 😉

Guitars on this album were not by Steve Hackett, but Anthony Phillips. He was their lead guitarist on their first 2 albums. Steve took over for him on their 3rd album. Also, the drummer is not Phil, but John Mayhew who was their drummer for this album only. Phil replaced him on their 3rd album as well. The background vocals on this song were also Anthony Phillips. A big part of the difference you are hearing on this song from the albums that came after is attributable to Anthony as well. He was actually considered to be the leader of the band while he was with them and they took most of their musical cues from him and his special gentle guitar playing(as opposed to Steve Hacketts more melodic and stylistic style) was more inspirational to the songs composition.

Steve Hackett and Phil Collins weren't on this album. They would join in time for the 3rd album Nursery Cryme. This had Anthony Phillips on guitar and John Mayhew on drums. I suggest White Mountain and The Knife from this album.

Have always liked this track and others on the album, Trespass. Very pastoral compared to later albums. Might be Anthony Phillips' influence who left Genesis afterward (he was before Steve Hackett). Another honest, thoughtful, and sensitive music rxn -tks very much!
