As an old man now, let me tell you why this car is so representative of the time and place it was built. By the early 1960s, my parent's generation had finally been able to make a decent living--after suffering through the Depression, having lost so many of their generation in WW2, they were wanting cars like this one, and others--that exuded the feeling of most Americans that we were the now the dominant nation. Culturally, we were ready to indulge in better housing, education, and of course, making some of the most powerful, comfortable, road-worthy cars ever seen!..There is a line from an old ZZ TOP tune ("Nationwide"), where the singer shouts out..."Let's drive that old Chrysler down to Mexico! Yeah!" This was just the type of ostentatious vehicle he was singing about. This was an age, just before the American people lost a popular president, witnessed a questionable war, and began to lose faith in our government...we see where we are now. Cars now are much better in many ways, but such things as style, and class, have fallen by the wayside.

When I was in high school my dad bought a brand new 300 G. It blew the doors off of everything on the road! People had a hard time wrapping their head around the two 4 barrels mounted on the fenders!

LOVE it!! My 1964 300K has the optional 405hp solid lifter short-ram 413 and it has the shifter in the console instead of the pushbuttons. Black with white leather interior!!

My coworker offered to sell me his 300K with the 413 for $4,500 back in about 1987... I was a young father living in an apartment with no garage and no extra money. I hope someone saved it as he said it would chirp the tires at highway speed and Nick just proved that! Congrats on your 300K and keeping it alive and well.

Best video yet !! I drive the exact car 300J white on red. I bought the car from the original owner 25 yr ago. It’s a beast !! It is stock with sure grip 3.23 gears. When you can get rubber shifting from 1-2 in a 727 automatic you know it’s torque monster !! Mine is all original with only 45,000 miles. Hi Ho Silver, away !! 😂

Wished I could have made it to Carlisle, maybe next year. My grandad’s ‘61 Plymouth had the push-button transmission and square steering wheel. I loved showing off the push-button tranny and explaining to his grandson, ‘Can you feel it shift?’ He loved to drive fast, and did so frequently.

Some Edsels had push button auto transmission, but the buttons were in the center of the steering wheel. Some Ramblers also had the same push button system as the Chrysler option (especially the Ambassador models) due to the fact that they used the Chrysler Torque Flight transmissions, re-badged as the Torque Command. My father owned an AMC/Rambler dealership back in the 50's and 60's and I remember seeing and riding in them, as well as driving them around the lot when I was a kid.

It’s a great space saver to move to dash. Took them 50 years and it’s back. My 2019 Ram has a transmission dial on dash. Love it.

My Dad had a '63 New Yorker. It didn't have the dual quad setup. My Mom had a '66 GTO with a 389 and the engine in the New Yorker dwarfed the 389. Comfort wise it was like driving down the highway in your living room.

Dad used to have a '64 Chrysler 300 with 413 4-bbl. It was a heavy road cruiser that sat low to the ground, and cornered like a champ. It had 60-series rubber all the way around, and handled great. I hope Mike goes forward to care for his 300J's rust, paint and seat cover issues. She is definitely a keeper that anyone would love to have. Great job, Nick!!! I love hearing her chirp the tires in 2nd.

Awesome video! Kudos to Mike and Mary for letting you give it the beans to showcase one of the kings of early 1960’s passing power. The style is polarizing, but down low torque is fun. I built a Chevy 496 that was at 500 ft lbs at 3,000 rising just past 600 ft lbs at 5,600 - it would just leap at any speed the accelerator was floored.

I like when you were on the highway and floored it. It down shifted and when it shifted to 3rd you could hear the tires chirp. I love it . Nick after your test drive we could yell you did not want to park the car. I am surprised you did not stop at the fuel station.

Those are short rams. The overall length of the Rams is 30 inches but the long/short designation refers to the length of the individual runners, not the total length of the manifold. "Long rams" have individual runners for the entire length while "short rams" are divided for one half (15 inches) the length. It is obvious when you consider the outward appearance of the the manifolds. The divided section can be easily seen in the castings.

I had a family of 3 generations of buying Mopars from the 40's up, and I got to ride in many of these cars from early 60s through early 80s... over 30 Mopars in the family that I rode in most of them with dad's, brother, cousins, uncles and grandparents... it was great, but disappointing the muscle was gone by the time I could buy a car and drive (except I got to drive the 440 wagon and it had nice torque!). Nick, I see your passion on your videos and I could see and feel your passion even more when I met you at Carlisle. Your passion is at a level of 100 octane low lead aviation fuel minimum!... maybe it is Nytro level!?! p.s. I wanted you to have enough trats to survive the Carlisle show and also for the ride home!

GREAT car ! My uncle was a Mopar guy, he had a `63 Dodge Polara with this same 413 cross-ram engine. It was a few hundred pounds lighter than the Chrysler 300, and was seriously fast. He was a conservative guy, but his favorite thing was to go hunting for Fuelie Chevys and rip them a new A-hole....

Maybe Nick should find a nice 1970 Hurst Chrysler 300 that no longer has a matching motor (or a worn out motor) and put the 528 Hemi in that. Sure would fit the "big motor" theme of the 300's and would really motivate that big C-Body Chrysler (of course a 70 or 71 white Cuda with Red interior would love the 528 Hemi as well). I am a big man, so I am with you loving the 300 line.

Hi Nick and George, just got the internet back, probably heat related, 105F yesterday. I have been waiting to see the road test of the 300J. Seeing Nick driving Mike's car brought back a lot of memories from 1964, when my friends father bought a brand new 64 300K Silver edition. It had the 413 long/short ram, with a 4-speed. I had some great times riding in that car, and it was very quick for what it was. I loved the camera angles during the road test, you nailed it George. I was impressed with tire chirp when the transmission shifted, and hearing Nick's He He He chuckle when he was slowing down. The 300J is such a cool car. You never know what will show up at Nick's Garage, the best automotive channel on KZbin.

That 300J is a real sweet looking ride with heap of choice bright work not to mention that low down torque Nick you looked like you were in your element taking it out for a test run which went as it should. My neighbor had a 300J with the 413, thought the 413 was a 4.25 bore. Another Neighbor had had a 58 Edsel with a 361 PI. The Edsel was much lighter than the 300, but the Edsel would beat it, but those 2x4 s sounded so good. The 361 PI was a solid cam in it and a 4150 Holley it was said to be a 750. That thing would rev to the moon. The tachometer would wind to 6200 rpm s and that’s why it beat the 300. They both had this charisma. That was gone a few years later.

when I was like 13 there was an older 300 I think a 59 for sale down the street from my childhood home and I was so obsessed with it. I had seen them on horsepower tv earlier in the week and I thought it was crazy that a car that old and cool just popped up for sale just a few blocks down the street a few days later.

Back in the 90s, drove a push button before, a '64 Imperial Crown sedan with a regular 413...huge car but very quick, thirsty, but it ran very smooth and was very comfy to ride in. Quality car for sure.

You should replace the gas tank and gas tank straps. My dad had a Chrysler and the tank fell out while driving down the road and the rear end shot up while I was in the backseat. That was fun.

Nick, you are cherished the world over, I’m sure, and for those that haven’t figured it out yet, this guy should be crowned the godfather of old school V8 engines. I’m only 52 and I grew up on points and carbs, so I feel Ike a kindred spirit with Nick. I just love when they are dyno tuning an engine and he quickly and instinctively knows how to get what is needed to optimize an engine for its intended purpose. Awesome.
