How can Mentzer...who narrowly lost to a best ever Zane in 79’....come back in 1980 looking much improved...place behind a Zane who was injured and 90% of his 79 physique? This Olympia was obviously a political pull to send Mentzer a message because of his being critical of Arnold and weiders training methods. Regardless if you think Arnold won or not this put Bodybuilding a step backwards and did more harm than good. I believe Arnold today admits that it was a mistake to have come back due to the backlash, hard feelings and collateral damage it did.

I remember when this took place. Everyone there said Mike Mentzer won with Zane coming in second. Zane was shredded but Mentzer looked especially well prepared that year. It was said Arnold got the win to promote Conan the Barbarian. Sadly, not much changed until the Weider brothers gave up control of the IFBB.

Zane wasn't even planning on doing the Olympia after suffering an injury but did so after Arnold talked him into it which was to serve as a buffer against Mentzer. The fallout after the 80 Olympia caused a boycott in 81 in which all the big names stayed home and Columbo wound up taking his second title. Zane commented after Colombo's win "just give the title to anybody"

As Weider was quoted as saying, "If I put Sergio on the cover, I sell X magazines. If I put Arnold on the cover, I sell 3X magazines." Bodybuilding was a predominately white sport and it helped to be a white guy, in those days. A black steelworker/cop was not nearly as exciting as a Nazi-sounding white guy, to the 'base'.

Blah blah, Arnie still beat them. He out classed them. His abs were a little weak but the package was still there. Regardless of the whining, Arnold won because he deserved to win. Arnold was there for CBS as a commentator after jumping into the competition and the controversial outcome CBS pulled the broadcast. Reports have indicated that Paul Graham threatened to disclose the stolen car incident in which he covered for Arnold if he didn't compete. This part of the story is important. The fact that Arnold refused to hit the mandatory poses without be disqualified is also interesting. Under current IFBB rules that where in force in 1980 as well Arnold should have been disqualified or at least had points deducted instead he receives a perfect score. I have sat at the Olympia Judges table for many years and witnessed politics and corruption at play. Great video!

Everyone should read Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. there is discussion about "psychological warfare". As Arnold says, having a world class physique is only half the battle. A true champion should have absolute control over his mental and emotional faculties. indeed, the screenshot for this video was in the book, and Arnold is retelling how he was telling Frank Zane a joke, in order to screw with Frank's concentration. If you want to dog on Arnold, then all the other champions of sport are just as guilty. Read that section in his book, digest it, and you'll understand.

Mentzer always maintained in his later years that he'd absolutely no regrets about retiring, saying that there's no way he'd put himself through that level of preparation for a rigged show. Ben Weider was seriously pissed off with him and had words with Joe, after which Mentzer's relationship with the pair was never the same, especially when Mike was training Yates in the 90s and challenging Weider's self proclaimed titled of "Trainer of Champions". According to Mentzer, Yates would eventually steer clear of him for obvious reasons.

A couple of interesting side notes that you left out: Adding to the controversy, Arnold only announced he was competing the day before the competition, which I think pissed a lot of the other competitors off. I believe he was even scheduled to guest judge before he announced he would compete. Zane was also not in peak form. He had also lost some weight from a bizarre injury suffered leading up to the competition, where he basically smashed his penis in a lounge chair at a pool and nearly died from blood loss.

Imagine if big Lou hadn't retired in 1975 and had competed in this Olympia along with Arnold, Frank Zane, Chris Dickerson, Mike Menzer, and Boyer Coe, possibly would've been the greatest Olympia of all time! After watching your analysis i came to the conclusion that Mentzer and Zane definitely both got screwed as both were leaner than Arnold, perhaps the fix was in!

If you look at 6:03 min....clearly Arnold is still better than the other two. Look at the slightly larger and more defined legs, larger chest, wider and more cut shoulders, and overall symmetry. The ease on the eyes has to paly a role as not only the size nor the definition is all there is to judge the most perfect body.

In this case is not about height which makes the diffrence. Now with Franco Columbo you can say that height did a big favor to Arnold because Franco was really muscular and stronger then Arnold, but he was a simple to short to beat Schwarcenegger...

Even though Arnold was by no means at his best at the '80 Olympia, he was still good enough to beat the others, including Mentzer. Look at Arnold at 0:08 and it's easy to see that he was superior to everyone else on stage. Bigger shoulders, pecs, arms, even his thighs didn't look significantly worse (if at all) than the other competitors. Look at their faces - all miserable... maybe not so much that they thought the judges would be biased, but because they knew that even in less than optimum shape, Arnold was still good enough to beat every one of them. I think what happened at the '80 Olympia is that everyone was so used to seeing the early seventies Arnold on stage, and that is what they expected to see again, that they were surprised that he was not in that shape. Still, his physique was so superior in those years that even in 1980 he was still good enough to win. In my opinion, people exaggerate as to the condition Arnold was in '80 - it wasn't that bad, about 85% of his best, and still great, as can be seen in the photos.

Even an Arnold at %80 was still far ahead of anyone on that stage! But Dickerson winning second spot was a joke! In my opinion he should not have even been Mr. Olympia period! Thanks for the video!

Um sounds to me like a lot of whining... We're supposed to feel bad cuz Mike cried waaaa Its not fair and quit? Like it was Arnold who held a gun to his head or "bullied" him out of the profession? Cmon man. Arnold was king and the differences were nominal if there were any. When Jordan came back I guarantee some of the ref's gave him breaks that the up and coming players didnt get because he earned it, because he's Michael Fucking Jordan. In other words, if you get a Raw Deal (pun intended) do you tuck your tail and run off stage crying, or do you come back stronger next year and show how tough you are? By the way Arnold has lost many competitions as well. He paid his dues. AND lets not forget, he actually had one of the best physiques of all time up to and through 1980 so.. This is a pretty weak argument.

Despite politics or anything else in the background, Arnold looked like he deserved to win, and he did win and no amount of whining and stupid conspiracy theories are going to change that.

I admit it was close, but Arnold look better in 70 percent of the poses than anyone else. Nick was saying how the Abdominal/thigh shot was Arnold's worst pose, but i thought Mentzer looked even worse in the same shot standing right beside Arnold. I agree with Mentzer placing 5th ( he only looked good in a few poses and relaxed he doesn't look good at all. He chest is way too small) . I thought Zane should of placed 2nd, Boyer third. Look at Roger walker and Roy Calendar tho they looked amazing that year!!!!
