Ya , actually bodybuilders were trying to push themselves to the extreme at that point of time. They were not only trying to grow exponentially but also compete more often. Their thought was exercises are good for the body so carrying it out all year around would give better results & the body would adapt to grow better & bigger. Unfortunately, too much of anything is bad. Such monstrous amount of strenuously invigorating exercises & demanding regimen can only be attained for a specific period of time by any human body. They didn't know exactly what that "specific time" was. So many bodybuilders just realised it the hard way that their body parts/organs would just snap under that much stress & strain. It's not like the body can keep growing infinitely if you feed & exercise it more.. Some died, some had fatal injuries & fortunately some corrected their methods after minor damages..

Lou was looking to be placing much higher, and the comparisons with the top guys weren't just for the audience, but he had an accident backstage partway through the competition where he cut his leg badly enough that the stress completely changed his physique by the time he stepped back onstage. Even Dorian supposedly later said that he viewed Lou as one of the biggest threats at that show prior to the accident. I may be wrong with this as I am struggling to find much information online supporting this, but this was definitely the story I heard. In any case, it was an incredible Mr Olympia!

Awesome vid Nick. Lots of good historical points and pictures. I still have the Flex magazine where it was reported that Momo Benaziza died. One of the things I read earlier was when Momo beat Dorian at the Night of Champions it was in part because of his back. That motivated Dorian to work extra hard on his back and the rest is history...

You just scratched the surface. Great video, btw. What a lot of fans don’t know is that Ferrigno was training for McMahon’s ‘92 show. Gosh, this brings back great memories being 20 years old back then. I'd say this was Dorian's 2nd best Olympia look ever behind his peak look in 1993 before he started getting injuries altering his look in biceps and other shots. Lou looked great for a comeback and, as you said Nick, improved the next couple years. Stacked lineup to say the least with solid bodybuilders like Sonny Schmidt, Vince Taylor, Danny Padilla and Samir Bannout also dueling. Taylor was the 3rd place finisher in both 1989 and 1991! I think the placings were about as fair as ever for the 1992 contest though I remember some saying Levrone being 2nd over Ray and Labrada was being generous. I don't think so as Kevin came in shredded and spectacular even though he wasn't his biggest. But he matched what Dorian did the year before with a runner-up placing. Bodybuilders still looked like bodybuilders in 1992. No guts, plenty of symmetry and proportion with good size. Even Coleman downsized looks really good!

If momo was 4 inches taller he would have won no hands down. What a phenomenal back. I think even better than Yates here. He had some of the best symmetry and aesthetics I've ever seen. His only weakness was conditioning. Obviously, I think this is what ultimately led to his demise. Since his over use of diuretics is what done him in. Such a shame. We really lost a great one and we might have never even seen his best condition. I think he was just approaching his prime.
