i realized that the reason i watch youtube videos is to feel low-maintenance connection and comfort. it’s hanging out without having to hang out. those are my favorite creators. the mr. beastification makes the space feel so hollow, so it’s nice when you find creators who feel like humans. from a creator standpoint, it’s hard not to give into the “HACK THE ALGORITHM” tricks, but i think the best connection is really just trying to stay true to yourself even if the growth is slower. loved this episode!

A genre that is really popular is long form reviews and deep dives. I love listening to people talk about movies and shows that I have or haven’t seen. I always joke, I don’t have an hour to watch a movie, but I absolutely have 6 hours to listen to Mike’s Mic talk about PLL or Luke Alexander break down TVD. This genre of someone explaining the entire plot in painstaking detail of a show I cannot be bothered to watch or rewatch is really really popular. It is absolutely background noise. While I am working I might put on a Mike’s Mic video that is 3 hours long and just work the day away it is effortless entertainment that also sparks nostalgia bc he is taking about older shows.

For the record- I must have a really good KZbin algorithm. I get new people recommended all the time and people I really like. I also watch very very different types of videos so maybe it just cant pin me down. For example I started getting your videos. I saw a few of the what Super Bowl ads people should do and I was hooked!

I love when people reference OG KZbinrs! My first favorite was Macbarbie07 (Bethany Mota) I loved her ! People were surprised by Charli D'Amelio, Lele Pons, and Harry Jowsey being on Dancing with the stars but I think Bethany Mota was actually the first KZbinr on dancing with the stars. She was the first one to break that wall and she sold clothes at Aeropostale does anyone remember that ? haha

I don't know if you guys read the comments or not but I wish you guys make video about making KZbin vidoes from 0. I really need a help from someone who know the industry like you guys. What to do, what to post, which niches are better and what to do to improve the quality of the content and things like that ❤️

Ooooh I would love to! Honestly, we are still learning about how to grow on KZbin ourselves. It's a lot more of a slow growth compared to the other platforms. But I would love to do an episode geared on how to grow as a Creator in 2024 :)

this video was so great❤ i know you guys will blow up soon!! i do want to respectfully say that i would like for Coco to have more chances to speak. Nick did incredible research and I feel like maybe they got really excited and didn't pause that much while speaking. I say this with peace and love and with much respect bc you are both really great!! ❤❤

Oh I 100% agree. I felt SO bad and even apologized to her at the end HAHAHA. I was just super nervous about trying to get through 15+ years of information in under an hour so i was in TURBO mode. Totally agree with you and the Nicky monologue will definitely not be the norm😂. Appreciate your kind-hearted comment so much though and it makes me so happy you enjoyed the episode -Nicky

This was such a good deep dive, not just on how KZbin has changed but how media, pop culture, and the general public's attention span have changed. I'm obsessed with all of the research you did for this video, Nicky! I also absolutely relate to podcasts/KZbin being both background noise and companionship! I have ADHD and am able to get mundane tasks done SO much easier when I pit on a podcast or KZbin video. It feels like I'm having a convention with a friend!

I love that gen z used to make fun of millennial nostalgia with their “feel old yet” buzzfeed articles and saying things like “thank god I was a 90’s kid”, “i miss the old internet”, “there was nothing when we got here, we built the internet from scratch”, but now they are starting to feel that same nostalgia but towards the internet as they knew when they were younger. I guess you can’t escape it huh??

47:31 theory proven with me right now, I’m doing something mundane, unboxing boxes while listening to you two discuss. I wanted to listen to a long format that still stimulates my brain rather than having to watch. If I want to hang out and chill I read a book. Podcast or long format videos discussing deeper topics are for chores.

an interesting shift i’ve noticed is how rarely music videos make waves in the mainstream nowadays
@thewhiterabbitchaser3 ай бұрын
depressingly the split attention factor you mentioned at the end is actually why a lot of netflix sucks now, the owners of streaming services are now running their potential shows by 'the second screen factor' which is basically what you said about wanting content that you can enjoy while doing tasks, the second screen factor is that the streaming services have statistics now that their show is more likely to be played all the way through if people can literally go on their phone and have the show as basically background company, and that's why so much of the netflix originals feel like elevator music feels, but in video form, simply put, it's why other more formal tv sucks rapidly now too

I've noticed this in a few videos (and im watching kinda out of order so idk if its been fixed in the later ones or not) that there is alot of times that Coco could be talking and the camera is focused instead on Nicky. Don't get me wrong Nicky's beautiful face and reactions deserve to be looked at, but it just kinda felt weird when it could either be a shot of both if them or focused in coco cause shes the one actually speaking. Love these videos and the breakdown of the eras tour of KZbin 😂

I think a lot of it is also the audience changing. It is hard to wake up one day and realize you are a grown up now and you just can’t relate to the same type of content you did when you were bright eyed and bushy tailed. The creators have changed a lot because they are still catering to the younger generation. Just now, the younger generation isn’t us. The internet was never for the older people. We grew up and didn’t realize it. It is a hard pill to swallow.
@culturue236210 ай бұрын
I think that there is just a lot of ageism in the internet right now and a lot of older gen z fall into that trap when they are actually really young and have a lot of life ahead of them. I know it’s hard especially with KZbin bad algorithms but you gotta start trying to find stuff you like alot of people in the media that are creators are even in that age range of being an older gen z so I think this is something individually you have to work through and realize it’s not true
@KratostheThird7 ай бұрын
@@culturue2362I’m an elder Millennial. I was here in 2006 when Numa Numa kid was popular. When you’re almost 40 like me, you will feel a burnout over the fact that the creators you knew from 2006 - 2008 have moved on and the current creators are catering to people less than half your age. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but like those fellow older creators, I have moved on too.

Even I miss the old youtube, back when it used to be just a video sharing website all about fun and creativity when people would just make videos for fun. And not take it too seriously but those days no longer exist since youtube is all about views and money and people take youtube too seriously though And you can't even make videos for fun anymore without having to deal with some users trashing on it even if you're not trying to make prefect videos though.

I think a good KZbinr to dive into is Felix (pewdiepie). Especially with the refreshing change in his content, almost like a retirement from KZbin. It also shines light on the appeal of KZbin as a career in the early 2010s. The narrative of spamming content until you’ve made it big.

I Never got any money for my vids, and I'm Gen 2. Well speaking of Television, Ever heard of The Annoying Orange? Of course you have, I ran into the Orange while Scrolling through My Satellite feed on T.V. It was on The Cartoon Network, Me: How annoying can an orange be? 1 second later: Me: Oh. And as for Fred it was the trailer for Fred: The Movie, And don't even get me started on Bieber. My Computer is my T.V. , hulu and tubi have replaced The Boob Tube in my house. Can you do a podcast on Miley Cyrus media predictions? Okay hear me out.. Miley released “Flowers” in January 2023 it became a #1 hit and the girl NEVER performed it live aside from her disney+ backyard session. Usually Miley promotes her album on Jimmy Fallon and performs her album’s single live but this year she didnt she only promoted her NYE special? Then she posted a documentary on Tiktok to celebrate her 30th birthday and her song “used to be young” the girl doesnt wanna go on tour so shes missing out on some MONEY. What are your predictions? Its clear she closed a chapter of her life with that documentary series and her dying her hair haha but i feel like something BIG is coming from her in 2024 but what?
