Very true, Leaving Las Vegas is his most “method” performance, which is the most fashionable form of acting at the moment. In that he actually got drunk, filmed himself and attempted to recreate those behaviours and movements on screen. He did it so well he won an academy award, so he obviously can do it, but then he went back to his non-method roots. The thing is method is quite limiting and there is an incredible breadth of styles you can do that exist outside the method.

I always loved this Roger Ebert quote. It sums the whole thing up... “There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on. He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.”

Playing a character in an outrageous, surreal or over the top manner is just what you want in an outrageous, surreal or over the top film. I feel like the argument that people are critical of Nick Cage because he doesn't following the standard realism acting style falls flat when you look at his movies individually. Cage movies are popular and well received when the movie itself is good. It doesn't matter how interesting/unique his acting is if the rest of the movie is awful though, and he often takes roles is terrible movies. I'd argue that people think he's a bad actor simply because he's in a lot of bad movies.

@@TimtheWinzard Watch some interviews of him, there doesn't have to be an argument; he is actually interested in experimenting with acting and he is definitely different. Y’all touched on this in the video, but I think Nic Cage’s style would be more accepted if the films he acted in were totally on board with it. But since his acting is often at odds with the script and the other performances, he comes off as awkward and ridiculous. And I don’t think he completely escapes blame for that. If he refuses to go with the flow and the overall vision, he can make an entire film fail with his performance alone. People should embrace Cage’s style as a legit take, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t ruined otherwise decent movies with his antics.

Problem with this is the fact, the director chose him and let him act like this, so it can't be in odds with the script or the directors vision, otherwise he wouldn't be allowed to do it over and over and over again. It's not like he acted without the whole production seeing him do it :)

@The Bandog "Y'all" is the most streamlined second-person plural in the English language, it's used by millions of Americans, and you yourself don't know how to use commas. So I'm not inclined to care about what you think. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@JaimeNyx155 жыл бұрын
@The Bandog I'm probably going to regret this, but I have nothing better to do this Sunday, so whatever: contractions are words in themselves. Saying that "y'all" is not a word is incorrect. While it's true that "you" can be plural, and began that way in its usage, almost no one who wasn't born before the 19th century uses "thee" (or "thou" for that matter, since you apparently forgot about the subjective case) outside of KJB or Shakespeare. English evolved, and in its current universalized usage, "you" can introduce needless confusion into conversation, so I sometimes prefer to say "y'all" instead of "you guys" or "yous guys" or whatever, since it's both clearer and authentic to who I am. Where I'm from, folks have been using the word for generations, so don't tell me I'm using it in "a pathetic effort to sound cool," you blithering idiot. Maybe the "coastal elites" are taking that word from us because it's a good word, not just because they're pretentious. And you absolutely used a comma wrong in your first comment. You have absolutely no reason to have a comma between "stupid" and "as," and your refusal to learn from your mistake makes you sound ridiculous. Also, for the record, I would have really enjoyed debating this stuff in a civil manner, but you moved the conversation into verbal toxicity for no reason I can tell other than in a poor attempt at wit, and you're not going to get away with it. No matter what you do to defend your argument from this point onward, you've already lost in my book.

Yes, and yet... That's the point of the text, that the soulless 80s corporate world was compelling and attractive even as it indiscriminately tortured those around it. Cage's ludicrous, repellent sociopathy undermines that narrative, and that's fine in a clearly different film. Don't get me wrong, Cage can be compelling and fascinating to watch. His "look at me" style is fascinating acting, I just think it's in service to his acting in and of itself, not in service to the narrative, the film, or his co stars. It's its own thing, it's just good to remember it's not a great fit for every story.

Peter, even at first doesnt act normal but still is somewhat regular representation of upper class male of the 80s. Bateman however is a psychopath and that by definition is a mental disorder which cannot be cured so its not a representation of "normal" people. Bale tries to overcome this gap by offering a charismatic performance that captures and invites idolization ...

That and it was just extraordinarily entertaining to see something that before I just saw as bad acting. After having watched this video however, you are now leaving me to think that we should be more open to styles of acting that don't conform to realistic human behavior. I'm also now of the opinion, thanks to your persuasive video, that Nick Cage isn't a bad actor, he's just different. I'd also like to add that I absolutely loved his performance in Leaving Las Vegas. As a recovering alcoholic myself, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of things his character did in the movie paralleled things I have done in my own life. His ridiculous and over the top acting worked really well for that role and as strange as it may seem to some, it was actually very realistic.

If you see the craft of acting from a nihilistic perspective, he's both the God and the Übermensch of Hollywood; each role he plays (the character) is a chance for him to self-destroy -self-combust, like a fire that ignites inside him out of nowhere, but he (the actor) always rises from the ashes like a Phoenix bird, willing to spontaneously combust over and over again in the name of art and cinema. When CD’s was still a thing, you would go into any movie store and picked a movie at random and the likelihood of having Cage as an actor was very high. It’s just weird, he seems to have a role in a big movie and later on be in an obscure movie. We could compare him to the Rock but with Cage, he just doesn’t seem to have any “special” characteristic as an actor. He is not innately talented, he is not as “handsome” as other high profile actors, he is not athletic or muscular but there’s something that just screams “yeah, why not, sure you can play the protagonist in this movie”

He's a good actor. He always has been. The thing about Nicolas Cage is that he does these bad movies so he can experiment with stuff without costing the studios ridiculous amounts of money on something so risky. That's why he makes those movies. He really does enjoy the process, and he likes to "play." When the dollars come to him for real, or when he really is in love with the message of a script as in the case of "Joe," he delivers the goods every time. Never saw him miss a beat when he's getting paid to do just that or when he's working with a lot of other very talented actors as was the case in films like Raising Arizona--my favorite Nicolas Cage movie. I'd love to see Nicolas Cage in a Tarrentino film. But, that will probably never happen.

He'd look too much like he's trying to copy Jim Carey.., I already feel like he's tried to adopt a small amount of Carey into his acting style as it is

We need to thanks Cage for his courage in experimentation and boundaries breaking.. Nietzsche would certainly point him as a reasonable example of a man that transvalorates what is set in stone.

I wouldn’t say Hayden Christensen acting was bad he just had really terrible lines he to convey and I think he did it pretty well

I gave Hayden the benefit of the doubt until I saw Jumper. Now I just don't think he's a very good actor.

EMS No his lines were perfect if you see the bigger picture. Anakin was raised as a slave and when he’s talking about sand he’s mentioning how different his life was from Padme. And then he uses that to make a move on Padme when he comments how smooth her skin is.

Cage is awesome! His over-the-top performance is what makes him great, and stand out. Actors are bland today, but no one can say that Cage's acting is boring, he's too damn special.

@@hmp01 I just sometimes save evening for this masterpiece. It is VERY serious, there is no unnecessary suspense and surprises, it flows with it's higher logic to it's very end, through total devastation to new life. Movie of the decade. Nicolas Cage really did good job here, but not only him, just everybody in the movie gave something to the atmosphere. it is more like good photo: you need the moment, the atmosphere, the people and you might have masterpiece. But not every photo succeed that way.
