I believe Nicolas Cage should do more voice acting in animation as I thought he was good in Spider-Verse and Grug from The Croods. ( November 30th; I just realized and Thanks to many that he has done voice acting before but I just forgot or didn't recognize him. I also think he played Doctor Tenma in Astro Boy from the 2010's I think )

He absolutely CAN, but why would he (aside from his financial issues)? He can act like a conventional reliable leading actor, and great one at that, a talented one, but he is no Daniel Day Lewis. I much prefer when he is allowed or choose to be THE BEST Nic Cage out there. In the same note of Lord of War there is Con Air, he is bad? No. He is memorable? Yep. But he is exploring his full potential as a performer in those movies? I don't think so.

Definitely deep. When he used to act like other actors, he won a frickin' Academy Award. He COULD do what everyone else does, and better, if he wanted to. But he is perhaps the only actor in Hollywood who isn't driven primarily by the lust for praise.

Very true, Leaving Las Vegas is his most “method” performance, which is the most fashionable form of acting at the moment. In that he actually got drunk, filmed himself and attempted to recreate those behaviours and movements on screen. He did it so well he won an academy award, so he obviously can do it, but then he went back to his non-method roots. The thing is method is quite limiting and there is an incredible breadth of styles you can do that exist outside the method.

I always loved this Roger Ebert quote. It sums the whole thing up... “There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on. He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.”

Julia Mimi I think we are saying the same thing there. His crazy over-the-top performances work when they are justified in the story. Hell _anyone_ could tell you that, it's not some industry secret. Imagine watching a film with no actors, or even terrible actors. Hell you don't even have to imagine a film with terrible actors. If anyone can act like you claim, explain the failure of actors in The Room or even some large productions. Filmmaking is a collaborative process, and it takes the best every part of the machine to get the job done right.

Other than what have been said in the video, I think Nicolas Cage's acting style appeals to that side in our psyche that's just sick of conformism. The "ridiculous" acting scenes where he appeared to have gone totally nuts actually feel very natural when we try to remember times when we went out of control, seeing ourselves internally in an over-the-top manner, making a sarcastic remark on things, or just sick of everything that we no longer care about how we might look to others.

Personally, I appreciate your perspective, pulling back to see the bigger picture and including an explanation of the acting techniques in early cinema, really helped me to understand how things have changed and highlights origins for Cage's Acting Style and Approaches. I never thought he was a BAD actor, in fact many of his movies in the 90s are very iconic and notable and have always enjoyed them as whole despite any criticism. In short, because of your extremely contemplative and introspective video, i have a new appreciation and understanding of the man known as, Nick Cage.

Yesterday i watched gone in 60seconds again, and i enjoyed it just as much as when it was released. I have a lot of favorite movies played by Cage, and some movies of him, i don't like but who cares. I think the tone of the film needs to be taken into account too. Playing a character in an outrageous, surreal or over the top manner is just what you want in an outrageous, surreal or over the top film. But when he's doing that in a film with a more serious, dark or down to earth tone, where other actors are playing it straight, it clashes horribly and he comes across as being tone deaf or lacking subtlety.

I feel like the argument that people are critical of Nick Cage because he doesn't following the standard realism acting style falls flat when you look at his movies individually. Cage movies are popular and well received when the movie itself is good. It doesn't matter how interesting/unique his acting is if the rest of the movie is awful though, and he often takes roles is terrible movies. Y’all touched on this in the video, but I think Nic Cage’s style would be more accepted if the films he acted in were totally on board with it. But since his acting is often at odds with the script and the other performances, he comes off as awkward and ridiculous. And I don’t think he completely escapes blame for that. If he refuses to go with the flow and the overall vision, he can make an entire film fail with his performance alone. People should embrace Cage’s style as a legit take, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t ruined otherwise decent movies with his antics.

@The Bandog "Y'all" is the most streamlined second-person plural in the English language, it's used by millions of Americans, and you yourself don't know how to use commas. So I'm not inclined to care about what you think. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@JaimeNyx15
@JaimeNyx15 5 жыл бұрын
@The Bandog I'm probably going to regret this, but I have nothing better to do this Sunday, so whatever: contractions are words in themselves. Saying that "y'all" is not a word is incorrect. While it's true that "you" can be plural, and began that way in its usage, almost no one who wasn't born before the 19th century uses "thee" (or "thou" for that matter, since you apparently forgot about the subjective case) outside of KJB or Shakespeare. English evolved, and in its current universalized usage, "you" can introduce needless confusion into conversation, so I sometimes prefer to say "y'all" instead of "you guys" or "yous guys" or whatever, since it's both clearer and authentic to who I am. Where I'm from, folks have been using the word for generations, so don't tell me I'm using it in "a pathetic effort to sound cool," you blithering idiot. Maybe the "coastal elites" are taking that word from us because it's a good word, not just because they're pretentious. And you absolutely used a comma wrong in your first comment. You have absolutely no reason to have a comma between "stupid" and "as," and your refusal to learn from your mistake makes you sound ridiculous. Also, for the record, I would have really enjoyed debating this stuff in a civil manner, but you moved the conversation into verbal toxicity for no reason I can tell other than in a poor attempt at wit, and you're not going to get away with it. No matter what you do to defend your argument from this point onward, you've already lost in my book.

Cage's ludicrous, repellent sociopathy undermines that narrative, and that's fine in a clearly different film. Don't get me wrong, Cage can be compelling and fascinating to watch. His "look at me" style is fascinating acting, I just think it's in service to his acting in and of itself, not in service to the narrative, the film, or his co stars. It's its own thing, it's just good to remember it's not a great fit for every story.

Human's in general don't like changes in things, that's why most people feel a little stressed for example when living at a new place, or meeting new people, or going to work in a new company, or transferring to a new school. What you are saying is some people likes stuff that are mostly not expected for them, like what you said. Cages performance is different in a way that is completely new to the general public that like what they've been watching for decades, and most people just can't accept that. But there has to be one that take the first bite, and I applaud Cage for it.

@@DukeGaGa I understand what you meant, I just tried to be funny. This is the real deal: being _different_ doesn't necessarily makes you special. Most of the time, it doesn't. And that's not because we are jerks who don't like change, it's just because that's the way the world works _(different_ animals get varying degrees of rejection from their peers, just pray deodorant on one hamster among many - or any animal AT ALL). We are not special in not liking very weird things, this is neurological, and even deeper, biological. The difference is, we are immune to natural selection, so people who should have gotten out of the gene pool a long time ago (like toy-pony fuckers) keep on breeding. Cage is one of such elements.

I've always been a big fan of Nicolas Cage. If you see the craft of acting from a nihilistic perspective, he's both the God and the Übermensch of Hollywood; each role he plays (the character) is a chance for him to self-destroy -self-combust, like a fire that ignites inside him out of nowhere, but he (the actor) always rises from the ashes like a Phoenix bird, willing to spontaneously combust over and over again in the name of art and cinema. As a thespian, that is his superpower.

The weird thing about Nicholas Cage is that he has played in so many different movies, all varying from low-budget to high-budget production. When CD’s was still a thing, you would go into any movie store and picked a movie at random and the likelihood of having Cage as an actor was very high. It’s just weird, he seems to have a role in a big movie and later on be in an obscure movie. We could compare him to the Rock but with Cage, he just doesn’t seem to have any “special” characteristic as an actor. He is not innately talented, he is not as “handsome” as other high profile actors, he is not athletic or muscular but there’s something that just screams “yeah, why not, sure you can play the protagonist in this movie”

He is in so many movies because he is really bad with money, so he kinda accept any gig. I don't doubt that he loves acting too, and that is a huge reason why he agrees to perform so many roles, but his financial issues are a clear explanation why he plays parts in movies that any sane human being knows are shit just glancing over the script. I don't doubt that he tries his best in every role, because you can feeel his passion for acting in his performances, but you can do so much with the material that you are given.

He's a good actor. He always has been. The thing about Nicolas Cage is that he does these bad movies so he can experiment with stuff without costing the studios ridiculous amounts of money on something so risky. That's why he makes those movies. He really does enjoy the process, and he likes to "play." When the dollars come to him for real, or when he really is in love with the message of a script as in the case of "Joe," he delivers the goods every time. Never saw him miss a beat when he's getting paid to do just that or when he's working with a lot of other very talented actors as was the case in films like Raising Arizona--my favorite Nicolas Cage movie. I'd love to see Nicolas Cage in a Tarrentino film. But, that will probably never happen.
