She lost me when she said private bitcoin wallets can be hacked (pretty sure it was taken from an exchange) and showed support for the Russiagate “whistleblower” who doesn’t meet the definition of a whistleblower. She is a hack. Keeps saying “0 day” over and over, does not sound like an expert at all.

Yhea there seems to be a bit of a distance between governments doing, and having the ability, and infrastructure to do the things... vs what those governments end up doing with it... In reality it seems those two things are rarely disconnected... Like, she's not wrong, sure we (as far as I know) don't set up political prisoners as organ farms, or MJ Fox around with radio active tea for journalists we don't like... but we seem to be ok with selling and doing business with both, and the reality is that where the line is between when a government starts crossing lines, and where the line was they crossed 5 years ago is variable but usually a one way direction, People don't walk back power that they have... and the whole reason we have checks and balances in our system of government is to attempt to recognize that it needs to be that way to keep that line as hard to cross as possible... the further you are, the more ability and structure and cultural acceptance you have with the thing, and the cognitive dissidence that you use to get everyone there... would really suck if you just happen to wanna use it for some extra cash on the organ market, or really didn't like that joke they made about you at the Post... 'Cause were not like that' and 'we don't do that' is a bad excuse and it's kinda nuts to see her validate that very notion several times.

I listened to this podcast on my way home from work, heavily enjoyed it and learned a lot as well as gained a better insight into the environment. Sorry to hear about your files due to the ransomware, that for some reason in particular peaked my interest to learn more about the deadbolt ransomware and in doing so found that my same Asuster NAS system has recently had the same attack. I recently moved so it is currently unplugged and sitting in a box but I was planning to set it up this weekend and wanted give my condolences and also thanks for preventing an attack by talking about it. Also thank you for all the podcasts, not enough words to describe the amount you do and the impact you make onto people like myself, many thanks.

Nicole's suggestion about deploying software engineers to find bugs is a really good one. I'm a computer science student at a pretty "good" university, and I found an exploit in GiveSendGo where I was automatically logged into a random user's account. I got this person's name, email, address, and other personal infos. I wasn't really in a position where I could do anything about it, but companies should make open communication channels for stuff like this.

Great episode Lex. You consistently put out amazing content. Got me realizing just how poor my own OPSEC is...my ignorance on things of a technical nature is pathetic at best. Enjoyed your guest, and just had to thank you both for the ride. Journalist's take great risk when they expose things hidden in the shadows. Scary seeing how many die under murky circumstances. True journalist's risk their lives. May TRUTH shine bright in the darkest of night.

I’m a little confused by her comments on Argentina. Her description of why it is a hub for hackers (essentially that it’s a relatively poor country) could apply to almost every third world country. And Argentina actually has a super advanced education and health care system (maybe that’s why?). Also she said that she most of the people at the hacker conference that she attended didn’t even speak Spanish. So how integrated were they into the Argentinian hacker culture?

Argentina has been a great place for IBM and HP to send jobs to, jobs that Americans once held. I worked for IBM at Avaya as a server and network administrator. The job went to Argentina, had to train my replacements. Went to Bristol Myers Squib and HP bought the IT department and administrators had to once again train their Argentinian replacements. Then we were kicked out the door. If we didn't "train our replacements with the same zeal and vigor we showed while making the company successful, than any compensation or benefits we had coming would be put in jeopardy." The company's words. Many network admins couldn't find good work afterwards because the companies were only looking for H1B visa holders, which Americans do not have. Our resumes were not even considered.

Lex, thanks for this interview! I was consistently impressed with the way this conversation flowed so nicely from point to point. It felt like y’all really worked together to flesh out ideas in a way that made it easy to listen to while not shying away from interesting anecdotes and relevant technical details. I’m sure that interviewing a skilled interviewer lends itself to this (and probably good editing - thanks y’all!), but I wanted to point it out because I feel like you sometimes sell yourself short in this regard. I know it’s important to keep the ego in check to promote the struggle for excellence, I just wanted to point out how clearly this interview illustrates the skill gap getting smaller; And coupled with the fact that it’s 2 hours long, I can honestly say I don’t know of anyone else in the game that could pull off a piece of content as interesting AND informative as this. Watching you humbly undertake your vision and never giving up has been a huge source of motivation/inspiration for me. So grateful to exist in this instance of the simulation with you!

Lex often reminds me of why I appreciate the great Russian authors. I feel like Lex appreciates the beauty of life and understands the role of suffering in the human experience. The best that he can. What a humble, intelligent, and gentle soul. Thank you, Mr. Fridman. You convey love and humanity beautifully. It’s a privilege. -Wicksley.

people have always thought there were lines america wasnt willing to cross, and then years later we find out the govt had been crossing those lines all this time. Guantanamo Diary is a good read. Graphic and horrifying, but a good read. Of course, that wasn't a US citizen, but obviously non-US citizens do not deserve any less due process

Your judgement, by definition, is a blind spot. That is exactly what this lurking element counts on....many reading this, watching this, share your disdain but let's face it, it's over for that tired ineffective mindset. Cyber war created you...created this remark....it won't go away because I want it to.

Her response about the "metaverse" and what that means for our children was the best part of this interview and also the most important! Do we really want our most meaningful experiences as human beings to be online??? Please look into the work of Alison McDowell and her interviews about this topic.... It's truly horrendous what we're willingly walking into with this technology and we have to be educated if we want to resist! She would make an excellent guest for this show!
