9:27 i actually kinda like the idea of funerary cannibalism, like, the idea of literally feeding your family with yourself, becoming part of their body and living on, such a little longer, as a physical part of them, idk, i think its beautiful. My mom says she won’t eat me though >:[

yellowjackets plot is so similar to something that happened to an uruguayan teenage rugby team in the 70s, they were flying to chile to play but their plane crashed in the andes, they were stuck there for months and had to rely on eating their own partners that had died to survive, would recommend digging into that accident, it's well known here in uruguay

What's so interesting about that case is the way that those boys managed to maintain a sense of normalcy and mental wellness while stranded. Because they ritualized cannibalism and linked it to religious rituals (Catholic communion) they were able to do it without guilt and by all accounts the survivors grew up to be normal and well adjusted people

not a recent release, but The Silence of the Lambs is one of my favourite films, so many ways to read into the themes of it, i wrote one of my uni essays about it lol. But i think a big aspect of the tension and fear when Clarice meets Hannibal is that feeling of being looked at like meat (literally) which can so easily be applied to fear of the male gaze. That’s one of the biggest allegories i get from cannibalism fiction

i literally finished yellow jackets about two weeks ago and just watched Hannibal. truly fitting timing for me to watch this amazing video . there is something so interesting in the discussion of cannibalism as a metaphor for love and care in shows like yellowjackets, where the act of dying and giving life to those around you is so necessary as opposed to in Hannibal, where the people are killed because one man views himself as above everyone else. the fact that it can be explored in so many different ways (though obviously this idea of oppression and consumerism is at the core of many of them) means that the nuances within each piece of media and the themes behind them can stand out on its own.

this is so interesting bc ive seen on tumblr many ppl use cannibalism as a poetic symbol, using it as a physical manifestation of a dark and unfathomable love for another person that eats you up so much you just have to physically consume them in order to satiate it, or on the other side the all consuming need to be enough for your partner that you fuel them and fill them up in the most graphic and physical way possible- usually both- so it's interesting to see this take. still fascinating and makes a lot of sense! but I can see mainstream media taking this other route to make in even more taboo in the future (tumblr loves yellow jackets and also hannibal if you cant tell lol)

I have been thinking about this a lot! I've watched Bones And All and just finished Yellowjackets recently and there's such amazing depth in those narratives. If you are looking for something similar in a music sense, Preacher's Daughter by Ethel Cain is a beautiful album with themes of cannibalism, religious trauma, familial trauma, etc. She even made a song inspired by Bones And All called 'famous last words (an ode to eaters)'

I feel like another theme with cannibalism is entitlement, which of course was/is a HUGE issue during COVID. The people who felt like they were so entitled to their own "lives"--things like eating in restaurants, getting haircuts, not wearing masks even though there's a mandate--contrasts with those who were concerned over their ACTUAL life, ie, the immunocompromised/other high-risk individuals who had to live among the entitled. The act of consuming another person's body--even if they died from other causes--still can only exist under the assumption that the consumer feels in some way entitled to use their body for food. Much like those who were totally fine with "sacrificing grandma" if it means "getting the economy back on track."

Wow even after covid there are STILL some of you throwing shade at those who didn't want to wear the masks that literally said on the box they don't work . They were useless ...only served one purpose...control. Instead of pointing your frustrations to the dirty elites and goverments who planned and then unleashed this . It was a bad cold / mild flu at best hyped up to get people in their fear and paranoid state . Then the drs and hospitals killed patients they said had covid by giving them a medicine that we all knew was killing people off along with the ventilator they were put on.

i've always found the idea (not execution) of eating your partner is so darkly romantic. not to actually eat them, but the desire to be so close to them that their body is literally inside of you. i love songs about that kind of stuff. my boyfriend and i joke around the topic because i've told him about this, and how it's not a violence/killer type thing, it's a macabre want to become one with my partner.

If you’re interested in the surge of cannibalism in the media, I’d highly encourage trying to visit the San Diego Museum of Us’s exhibit Cannibalism: Myth vs Reality! I went in 2016 and the exhibit has been extended several times since, which no doubt has to do with the rise of cannibalistic narratives in the media. It explores several historical forms of cannibalism in interactive ways, such as an apothecary station that will prescribe you a remedy made from human parts for your health issues and a ‘lost at sea’ simulation where you have to draw straws. They also have a life-size game of operation with calorie counts on all the organs and muscles and a voting board where patrons can choose whether thinks like breastfeeding and eating boogers is cannibalism. My friends and family were very weirded out by my interest in this museum and these shows, but I think it’s a deeply fascinating ethical topic about where we draw the line for one of the worst taboos we have.

This video made me realize I definitely have not been "consuming" cannibalism media as intended lol. I was first introduced to it as someone interested in sexology, so I learned about it being a form of next-level connection. I watched Fresh and took it as that the elite are so far removed, they must consume for human connection. In Bones and All, these characters cannot get close to people but still crave intimacy. I think that's one of the great things about the horror genre: there are the overarching themes, and then also how it taps into individual viewers' fears.

1000% percent with the thesis that COVID is a huge factor in the thematic cannibalism resurgence. so many of these films/shows use it as a metaphor for consuming the entire personhood of someone that you love (wrt Bones and All uses this is a consensual expression of love; Yellowjackets is a way of try to absolve yourself from what you did to someone.) I think audiences are aching to feel more connected with people. Bones and All also uses cannibalism as an allegory for factors that isolate people even more (addiction/queerness in a midwest environment); hate crimes and bigotry have also skyrocketed post-radicalization that happened during the pandemic. ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ is another medium (music), but Ethel Cain closes off her album with both of these allegorical ideas.

I think it’s also gotten so popular because like fashion, horror repeats itself In the 90’s slashers were popular, in the 2000’s-2010’s it was paranormal/gore(specifically overly exaggerated like in Saw or final destination) Currently I think we’re in body horror and cannibalism, with slashers making a bit of a come back so it will likely repeat into slashers OR maybe even something new, I know aliens are getting a bit popular again so who knows

Read Sayaka Murata's books. Particuarly Life Ceremony, and Earthlings. Life Ceremony is a collection of short stories, all of which I enjoy, two of which I think would interest you! Those two stories are A First Rate Material, which isn't about cannibalism per se, but about a taboo use of dead bodies, and the story the book is titled after: Life Ceremony. Life Ceremony does focus specifically on cannibalism (and other things). Earthlings is about a lot of things and maaaybe this is a spoiler so stop reading at your own risk: heavily features cannibalism at the end of the book, including auto-cannibalism. Sayaka Murata makes a lot of commentary on society and culture and why we do the things we do / are expected to be they way we're expected to be. I could go on and on and on, but I'll cut it at that.

Loved the video! If you are curious about cannibalism used as a critique of society, check out “The modest proposal” by Jonathan Swift, it dives into so many themes, from putting responsibility solely on the working class to solve structural issues, to housing, etc. It’s a short but fascinating read

i also love yellowjackets!! and i agree the surge of cannibalism in recent media is a really interesting topic. if you want a fiction recommendation, i recently read “tender is the flesh” which was a very dark but fascinating read about a world in which cannibalism has become commonplace

I’m pretty sure I’m in the one percent that doesn’t find cannibalism to be the MOST disturbing theme. But I was a nbc Hannibal girlie in the 2010’s, all up in it on tumblr and generally into macabre subjects. ‘Fresh’ felt played out to me and over edited, I wanted a deeper dive, like it just scraped the surface of what it could be. So yeah I’m the hipster of this being like “oh you like that? I liked it ten years ago, sweetie. It’s nothing new.” Annoyingly lol

For me cannibalism is so far into the realm of fantasy it’s not even disturbing to me, I know it has happened but it just feels so far removed from anything that regularly happens. Shows involving abuse/assault are a lot more disturbing to me

@@jsjsjsjjdkbbdddA lot of times cannibalism goes hand in hand with abuse and assault. Just look into the the most heinous serial killers and (oddly enough) the American Psycho novel and you'll see what I mean

I'm obsessed with cannibalism. Not in a weird way, I'm autistic, but I run an entire tiktok account dedicated to analyzing canniablism in media, particularly in regards to Hannibal Lecter and the NBC show. I think we're seeing a huge uptick in cannibal media as a response to the pervasive need to document everything that's so common right now, and the hell that is late stage capitalism. The way vampirism was depicted as a predatory aristocracy literally draining from the poor, we see a LOT of commentary right now about what it means to be consumed. Our bodies and our lives have begun fodder to be devoured by the super-rich, our pain quite literally feeds them- there's a deep sense of being preyed upon (especially for women, who are treated like meat quite literally). It's really fascinating to watch- things like Tender is the Flesh, Fresh, The Horror of Dolores Roach, even Sweeney Todd touch on these themes.

I haven't read books or watched movies or shows about cannibalism but what really opened my mind about the whole thing is listening to a youtuber, Caitlin Doughty, talk about a plane crash in snowy mountains and the people who survived the crash had to eat their dead friends and loved ones. She really is wonderful and has helped me with some of my biases about death. I know it's not like symbolic or anything cause it's about actual cannibalism and there's no hidden meanings but that video kind of got rid of this idea in my head that all cannibalism is for no reason other than someone liking to eat their own kind.

I have been morbidly fascinated with cannibalism my entire life. I knew all about when I was very very young. And it's probably because I was very unhappy, and now seeing people who used to be shocked by my interest are now the same. CRAZY. So full circle

I’ve always loved cannibalism. Since I first watched silence of the lambs at like 8 years old. Then watching the show Hannibal - at like 12 - opened me to the world of cannibalism and love. to the point where I wrote a short story of cannibalism / romance for my year 9 English class! What I find interesting is that cannibalism is only a taboo topic until it comes down to survival or zombie/vampire movies. Like zombies are still technically human they are just brain dead( depending on how the story frames them to be created) and vampire are still somewhat human. Both creature have human trait or were a “normal” functioning human until they were bitten or infected but they could still be considered human in a sense. Why is cannibalism in media considered okay when we dehumanize a person ? And many other species of animals have cannibalism as a common practice when it comes to survival and we are ok with that. Another thing is the whole “deserted island” question. “If you were trapped on a deserted island with ___ and ___who would you eat first?” Those type of conversations are really common and are taken vary lightly. We as a global society can only grasp the concept of cannibalism when it comes down to survival. Cannibalism is only viewed as “ok” when it comes down to extreme situations like being trapped on an a deserted island or the end of the world. I personally have never been super off-put when it came the the concept of cannibalism rather I find the psychology behind it and how we perceive it interesting. I think it is an interesting trope for horror and i do hope to see more movies and shows involving it and i do hope more conversation are brought up on the morality of it because this topic is deeper than most people may think. I am not saying i agree with cannibalism, I just believe it should be talked about more and viewed in multiple perspectives bc it is very complex.

The very first movie I have ever seen that included themes of cannibalism and people being driving to it was the People Under The Stairs. I was beyond intrigued and I began watching every movie I could get my hands on that showcased any sort of dire situation that ultimately lead to people eating people. One day I was discussing it with a friend and she said dude, you have to read the Road. This is my favorite book and has been for almost 20 years. It is what I feel is the most convincing portrayal of what exactly could very well happen if the world was subjected to a disaster that was catastrophic enough to zap our electricity and infrastructure for good but leave handfuls of people alive and forced to fend for themselves without the aid of a governmental structure overseeing their conduct in order to ensure the "leftovers" aren't just killing each other. Needless to say it scared the everloving crap out of me and made me, almost thankful that we do have systems in place that keep us somewhat in line.

Shadow People by Graham Masterton is a book about cannibalism that, I will admit, is SO HARD to get through at some points. The author describes everything in a lot of detail and the story goes through many perspectives. It is a really good read though, especially if you like crime novels, cult undertones and some history lessons on ancient rituals.

tender is the flesh by agustina bazterrica is a truly unnverving but phenomenal book about the introduction and capitalisation of human farming as a result of a disease that made animal meat inedible. it has some of the most thought-out commentary i've seen (maybe ever) and even as a ~seasoned~ horror fan it makes me feel quite ill. however, that is much more to do with the intentions behind what events takes place, not the way in which they are described, if that makes sense. the writing is really amazing though and my copy has been underlined to the max

I haven't watched any of these because i'm just not a big show/movie watcher, but media symbolism and how people use taboo or monsterous things to represent how they feel about important topics of a time is so interesting, like how vampires are often used to represent otherness and how what specific other they've represented has changed throughout history. anyway i guess i'm kind of neutral on cannibalism?? if i got stuck somewhere and had to eat another human to survive then sure why not. i'd probably think about it forever but i'd rather be alive and thinking about it than dead and not doing anything fun. if i had a limb amputated for whatever i would definitely try to save and eat it because that's a once in a lifetime oppurtunity that most people will never get to have/wouldn't want to have! i don't actually like meat that much but like hypothetically if i get the oppurtinity, with consent/i will die otherwise, i'd take it. unless it's one of my friends who died then i probably would be too sad and i would lie on the ground and cry instead
