Interesting comments on the older film camera repairmen retiring or passing away. I think most of us found other professions once the digital age struck. I repaired cameras full time until 1986 then part time until 2004. Most of the shops in New England were starting to close by then. I still have all my old camera repair hand tools but sold my tester to a fellow repairman who I had mentored. I went to National Camera Tech in Colorado back in the 1970's. The school no longer exists but it gave me a great foundation. I've been thinking about doing KZbin instruction videos. I am not sure what the interest would be for that type of instruction. Most folks would not want to invest the money needed for the testers, collimators and light sources you would need to do the correct repair job. On top of that, parts would have to be taken from donor cameras which would be time consuming.

Actually, I think the interest would be there. At least I would be interested. Even though there are some or maybe a lot repairs that need expensive tools, ehre is probably quitre some stuff that people could do at home or for friends if they knew how to.

This was very interesting, thank you both for your time. It would be interesting to know what camera models in general need more expensive repairs and parts, etc.My repair tech (who is retiring soon) specifically warned me about Contax RTS , and Pentax 67.for example.

I used to hate replacing the foam seals in the rotating back on the RB67. I’ve seen lots of RZ67s with stripped focusing gears too.

Ian Hand God, please tell me it’s not that bad with those of RB67s in particular. I was about to do this myself, but I’m also kinda lazy. Is it very finicky?

That was pretty interesting, thanks for putting it up. But I think it's not true when he says that most of the repair information you find on the internet is wrong or incorrect. Sure, you will find information saying that tensioning the shutter springs might help to resolve sluggish focal plane shutter curtains, but almost everywhere you can read that, it also says that this will only fix the symptom and cleaning/lubrication is the real solution to the problem. If you dig deep enough you will find pretty decent info. The internet community is an amazing resource for camera repairs.

The last camera repairman in my retired due to age and health. I'm avoiding expensive cameras that can't be repaired or are to expensive repair. I'm sticking with Olympus and Nikon 35mm bodies that I can pick up cheap. Also have two Mamiya 645 bodies. These should last me the rest of my days, often I'll buy a camera because I'm wanting the lens on it. My problem is getting lens that aren't full of fungus.

It somewhat worried me when Toni said that most of the repair info you can find online is misleading/wrong/incorrect. How exactly are newcomers to camera repair actually supposed to get access to the correct information, if they're not lucky enough to apprentice under a diminishing pool of old repair technicians?
@mattilatoni
@mattilatoni 4 жыл бұрын
The lack of mechanics today is worrying, yes, and that's what drove me to start in the first place. Proper camera repairs is not however something you learn overnight from a youtube video.
