Ebonized Oak Cutting Board
The oak is ebonized by a natural chemical reaction to the tanons inside the wood. The board is coated with a “tea” made from oak shavings. I then rub a apple cider vinegar mixture on the oak and let it react overnight. The resulting wood is jet black. Darker than any stain could do.

Hi Nic, you left a comment on my page so I hopped over to see your work. Really good, neat job and great videos- I felt your pain in splitting the log- free gym. Nice traditional wood finishing techniques too. Keep up the good work my friend, Justin

Wow, I can only imagine how calming it is to work with wood and have all those bird and nature sounds aroud you! Awesome. Love the editing - goes SO well with the sound. Great board too 😉 Did you only use the „oak tea” and anything beside that?

for one reason or another, I’ve never had an enclosed workshop. I’ve totally fallen in love with working outside. I use the oak tea to increase the tannins in the wood, then I rub a steel/vinegar solution all over for the color to take effect. It takes about a week for the the steel wool to dissolve in the vinegar. Thanks for checking out the video!

Nice cutting board. Appreciate the quiet, relaxing. Did you build your bench yourself? I'd like to make a bench that I can leave outside. Covered but outside nonetheless.

@NicTaylorWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ron! I built that bench when I lived in an apartment years ago. It’s served me well, but I’m definitely ready for an upgrade. It’s the knock down Nicholson workbench that popular woodworking had in a magazine a few years ago.

Nice work! Doing some good stuff with the videography and editing! Have you ever worked with teak before, and what finish did you use/ recommend for it?
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Didnt quite learn how to film until the end of filming this one. I’m hoping each video will improve from here on out. I havn’t done much with teak, i was thinking of making some decking for my parent’s boat a few years ago. The finish is a chemical reaction between the wood and steel wool dissolved in apple cider vinegar. After that i just coated the board with cutting board oil.

Hey, nice cutting board. The color reaction is very very good. I'm watching all your videos, you're a great woodworker. What do you think between Ashley Iles and lie nielsen chisels? Do you prefer one over the other?
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I love both chisels, actually. The Ashley Iles is great because it sharpens so easily and has a good price point. The Lie Nielsen are more expensive, hold an edge a bit longer, and just feel more robust and long lasting overall. Either way, you’re getting an amazing chisel

Hi Nic, i like your video and i want to know if that iron acetate is food safe? I like to use it on cutting bords also. ty
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that it’s totally fine, as it’s a natural reaction with the wood itself. The wash is removed after ebonizing. Also, there are several companies that sell boards commercially using the same process. I’m just a woodworker though, so no promises :)

iron acetate? wasn't it just boiled oak shavings, and vinegar? or was there steel wool in the vinegar?

Since when does the liquid of boiled oak turn the oak black?
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
The oak shaving helps increase the darkness of the color, but the black color comes from a steel wool and vinegar mixture made off camera.

@@NicTaylorWoodworking ohh ok u should do a time lapse of the steel wool as it dissolves in the vinegar
