Highly recommend playing this game and it's predecessor, Nier Replicant. If you want an emotional rollercoaster, these games are it. The story is immaculate, the action is enthralling, and you can be as deep or as shallow with the gameplay as you desire. With each playthrough (or maybe chapter would be a better term) of the games, you learn more about the world and the characters in it. Edit: Wait a second! Wasn't that two trailers? I was JAPED!

Nier Automata is among my favorite games of all time. It's the brainchild of the insane genius Yoko Taro with the polish of Platinum games (the creator of Bayonetta). It's an exploration of what it means to be alive with really unique story telling. In fact a lot of your comments about the trailer tells me you two would love it. There's actually 26 endings to the game. While most of those endings are joke endings, endings A-E let you see the full story. It's all just super unique and leaves a lasting impression. It also has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.

Beyond this game having incredible story, art direction, and music, it's one of the few games that truly achieves ludonarrative consistency. Fun facts about this game and the ones before it! While this is the second Nier game, it wasn’t mainstream popular until this entry. Even now some don’t know Nier is a spin-off to Drakengard but that’s becoming more known. It’s also interesting to note this is the first game where the protagonist is explicitly stated to be not human early on, yet that’s not to surprising since the only actual human protagonist we ever had was Caim in Drakengard 1 and he was a murderous psychopath. It’s also interesting to note that this is the first Nier game to have multiple playable characters in the main story. Not to surprising considering it’s the second game but if you consider expanded universe it shares with other games this is actually a return to form. It is the only one to have Androids as playable characters though.

I can't answer any of the questions or ideas you're wondering about because of spoilers. But let me give you some food for thought on our three main characters: 2B (short-haired F android) - '"To be" or not to be', self-explanatory reference 9S (M android) - "Nein Est" roughly translates to 'Is not!'; phrase is used in various German performance art pieces as a declarative answer to questions like what 2B is referencing (like when it was written in the margins for a few compositions by Beethoven) A2 (long-haired F android) - "Et tu" roughly translates to 'you too'; popularly referenced when one feels *betrayed* (good job pointing that part out!) from the phrase 'et tu Brutus' NieR: Automata is something of an academic satire/comedy (in the classical sense of those words) for historic western philosophers & their works, with the overall narrative nodding towards Nietzsche in particular. A lot of explorations of existentialism & nihilism lean towards the melancholic, but Automata presents the full spectrum of human emotions rather than just sadness (although it's definitely there!). Hence, "I never quite realized how beautiful this world is" - it's a beautiful exploration of nihilism rather than a merely bleak one I cannot recommend it enough

Nier Automata is the only game that has made me cry. End of the third run (C), tied it all in and breached what makes us human in a neat story designed to showcase the spirit will surpass the lifespan, and have a thunderous echo that cannot be ignored. But after having played both Replicant and Automata now, I can safely say that this is one of the best stories ever told in video games. The emotion, sadness, the existential question of what it means to live in this world....this game makes you feel these emotions and ask these questions. It's sad and cathartic at the same time.

If I had to pick a single game to be chosen as a work of art, it would be Nier: Automata. The story, the music, the theming and atmosphere, the characters, the combat, the exploration, everything just feels so well done. Especially the storytelling which feels so unique to this game/series. It may sound dramatic, but this game genuinely changed me as a person (in a good way) and the way I think about life in general. Easily in my personal top 5 games ever made, and one that I would say belongs in a definitive top 10 games of all time list.

I am austistic with major depression among other things. So there is not much when it comes to movies, games, and music that will create feelings of sadness in me or cause me to empathize with the characters, but Nier will. When I first played it it brought me to tears and the music still gives me chills. This game is like a depression simulator but it is phenomenally good. It is very philosophical and to get the whole story you have to play through 3 times because each time will unlock more of the story. I love this so much that even in Final Fantasy XIV, one of my favorite games, the first of the 3 raids that are a crossover with Nier automata is my favorite raid. I wish I could erase the memory of the game from my mind so I could experience it all for the first time again

"Glory to Mankind" The YorHa Motto Also 2B one of the main android protagonists, the gal with the two big swords on her back has one of the greatest philosophical lines imo. Basically how she's musing at the beginning, _"Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle, and wonder if we'll ever have the chance to kill him."_

This is the kind of game that you simply will not understand unless you play it in its ENTIREITY. And it is a time sink. But the story is designed to be experienced over multiple different playthroughs. The game is very meta with its narrative and frequently breaks the fourth wall to get its points and themes across. It is an absolutely beautiful and brilliant game and story... but on the surface it looks like nothing more than some silly sci-fi fun. These short trailers couldn't possibly capture what makes NieR: Automata so incredible. So don't feel bad if you didn't quite get it lol

This is the last game made in an era of Platinum's history I wish lasted longer. Platinum again known for Bayonetta and their connection to Capcom and DMC. What's important about Automata was that Platinum at the time didn't make original games. Instead they were tasked with making something out of other properties which is where I think they shine most. They are terrible writers and their unchecked freedom can often fire back at them. However with Nier they had Yoko Taro as a director and writer. From what I understand he stood up to Square Enix so they could do what they do best, gameplay and awesome cutscenes. However just having someone with a well defined vision of everything else allowed for them to shine wear they lack. There were we a handful of games like this for Platinum, some better than others. Some of the better ones however were a Transformer game with their style of gameplay and Metal Gear Rising Revengence which was different but still has the signature Platinum touch. Revengence in case y'all don't know is amazing as well. Also there's Nier Replicant which is a remake of the original. The original had famously bad combat which is why Platinum got to update it. Don't know how many differences there are but it does come before Automata.

_NieR Automata_ is a very interesting game. On the surface, it would appear to be just an excuse for a game director to satisfy their maid fetish and love of robots. But, being one of the themes of the the game is assumptions based on incorrect information, it turns out to be MUCH more than that. You actually end up with a heavily philosophical look at what it means to be human. For example, you'd assume that since the androids look human and the machine lifeforms look like wind-up tin toys, that the androids would be humanity's successor. But as you play the game, you realize that it's the machine lifeforms who display a far deeper amount of humanity's emotions and culture, both positive and negative. By comparison, it's the androids who the most machine-like.

The game's amazing. The plot is super crazy, and you can almost work out how the prequel games all work together to get to where the next one is. But I think even the most straightforward explanation is convoluted by alternate timeline shenanigans. If you do want to understand 'how we got here', you need to dive into the earlier NieR story (think NieR Replicant covers that) but also the Drakkengard series for how the NieR world got to where it was. The exact fate of Humanity isn't really a concern for most of the game, though I do believe you get more information if you explore certain endings. To get the full story, you do need to complete the game multiple times to see multiple endings. I believe there are essentially 3 protagonists - 9S and 2B are the team you see the most of, but there is also A2. Each character has a different perspective and sometimes wildly varying gameplay and skills from the others. I think the explanation you get at the start of the game boils down to humanity fled the planet and has been waiting for the machines to be defeated to return. But it's been a neverending war with neither side having a way to finish off the other. You fight as the androids who appear more human than the more robotic Machines, who were actually fighting on behalf of an alien invasion. It's a crazy proxy war in other words. There's so much more to be said for the things you see, learn and feel along the way. They don't take the simple path of just having everyone be gungho to win the war (though there is certainly some of that) - without getting into specifics, you are presented with so many cases where you are compelled to question if neither the androids or machines can claim that they've attained their own brand of humanity, that their lives might actually be just as valuable as those who no longer fight in this war.

Nier Automata is an experience. It's worth playing. It seems relatively simple and cliche but only on the surface. Oh a bunch of androids wanting to know if they can be human. But when you peel the layers away, you'd know that theme is wrong. They're already human. But the question they're asking: "Now that I am human. What is my purpose? What does it mean to exist?" And as you peel back the layers, the more you play, the more you find out about the plots and machinations going on behind the scenes. Interactivity is a huge part of the game and the story told is one that can only be told through a video game format.

The games lore is kind of split up everywhere (theres hidden lore in the bloody live orchestra, where in between songs they had the voice actors play out theater scenes that happened during gaps in the game) but answering any of your questions are spoilers, id say play the game. But basicially the games based on one of the bad endings of nier gestalt and what would happen hundreds of years later if that timeline continued.

Honestly, i highly recommend playing this game instead of just a lore video... but if that's what you want, there's kinda a problem. Now, you can play or watch a video about it without any problem, but if you want to immerse on the entirety of the story, then you would like to check Nier Replicant/Gestalt story (which is the first game of the franchise). But there's another problem there because that game is a spin-off of a serie called Drakengard, which has 3 games in total (But the 2nd is kinda not canon, there's a high discussion about it). In conclusion, to understand everything (which again it may not be necessary, but it really helps) you need to check the lore of Drakengard 3, Drakengard, Nier Gestalt/Replicant and Nier Automata. All of that without counting the amount of books and stage plays (yes even the theater plays are canon) that are out there. I can highly recommend Valkyrie Aurora's video -From Drakengard to Nier: Automata- to get view about it, or if you have the time and you want to get more into it you can check Clemps's videos about all the Drakengard/Nier games.

A true masterpiece that requires you to beat the game 3 times to really start the game. I mean this, the opening credits don't start until you beat the games 3 times, and it's always a different experience. You have got to do yourselves a favor and play what could've been game of the year if it wasn't for Breath of the Wild coming out the same year. Dive into Yoko Taro's genius mind. The characters are 2B, the combat android loyal to Yorha, 9S, the scout android who assists 2B throughout the game, and A2, the long haired android that defected from Yorha and is now a traitor.

Nier automata was such an amazing game, that and the creator is a pervert and he let you remove her dress for the memes, he then asked for a folder of all the nier “art” *cough* that people drew so he could admire it. When you have to understand this is still probably the most sane story to come from the mind of Yoko Taro that comes as an indirect sequel to his second most sane game NieR: Replicant/Gestalt, which was remastered last year with updated graphics and combat controls to similarly match Automata. Both of these games are indirect sequels of the first Drakengard game which that entire series is a love hate relationship even among fans. Because the lore is only comprehensible if you were raised in Arkham asylum and is a crazy feast of a treat. But the gameplay and just about everything else makes them nearly unplayable. Including really cringe moments for no reason other than I think Taro just wanted to get back at being forced to make sequels he didn't want to (save for 2 he wasn't on Drakengard 2) and 3 has framerate issues in the gameplay that makes its best performance in motion a resounding 15 fps. Original NieR is clunky but servicable to alright in its combat and carried primarily by the story. Automata is basically Square Enix hiring Platinum games to do all the combat mechanics and development with Yoko Taro at the helm of writing. A youtubber by the name of Mr. Clemps actually did a series of story and lore. Review and analysis videos on pretty much all of the mainline Yoko Taro games and the NieR and Automata ones are definitely where he picked up a style he found enjoyable going forward. Even he says it's up to viewers if they want to watch his older vids on the Drakengard series as he says himself they're too tryhard and cringe. Though there is also AuroraValkyrie who got popular doing short analysis vids on the NieR/Drakengard series as well. Lastly. Automata got an anime adaptation announced earlier to last year and recently it got an official trailer.

Think this game has 26 endings ranging from the true ending to very ridiculous ones! If you decide to play this game, I think you would love it ax there are a lot of philosophical undertones.

I bought my PS4 back in 2017 because of this game. I was initially seduced...I mean attracted by their character design but then I was heavily traumatized by the plot twist. It still remains as one of my top favourite games now.

This is one of the best games ever made, though the plot is almost impossible to follow at times. Basically the plot is that humanity is extinct and it's all misery for the androids and machines still left fighting each other, trying to find some meaning in their existence.

This game is a favorite of my wife and mine. I will say right now, if you ever look up how this turns out or how it ends, the true ending of this game is one of the best I've ever seen. It asks you to undertake some things that affect you, the player, in real life and was a very emotional journey. I can't recommend this game highly enough.

So happy you finally got to this series. I'm not going to say anything, as this and the first, NieR:Replicant/Gestalt(2 slightly different versions of the same game) are an experience you must have for yourself, a journey you must undertake. Please play both games on the channel, I will love you forever if you do. Also, if you want the full experience, play both games and do not, repeat, DO NOT look up any lore or explanations beforehand. The questions Bethany was asking are kind of the whole point, the questions you're supposed to be asking going in. Don't just watch cutscenes for the first game either, trust me, it's nowhere near the same. Just play both of them! Cheers!!!!

@@dlpheonix I understand that, but again, it seemed fairly obvious to me. I (clearly wrongfully) assumed that was just a clearly understood part of the premise. I wasn't surprised at the revelation. Granted, I had long since played the first game, but still, I distinctly remember promotional materials/reviews saying as much, so didn't consider it a spoiler. However, I do want them to go into their NieR journey as blind as possible, hence the edit to my original comment. Although, if they make the mistake of digging into lore before playing, they'll probably learn that fact anyways. It is what it is. I have never, nor will I ever, engage in trolling. My bad! Oh, Bethany is asking a lot of good questions. I think she would really like Nier Another game, "Astral Chain," made by the same developers that co-developed Nier Automata is a really great game with striking visuals, music and a plot that is actually better than most of their original IPs. I really suggest watching a few of the trailers. They are so hype! kzbin.info/aero/PL62twYNJelq0cRKkVUhurvD5X7Fdp7Kpd&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
