Hey, Nigel, The past 18 months I believe I've seen all of your videos. Some, I've watched a second time, and several have been referred to a couple of my photo friends. Some feedback: I'm "good" enough that I know the kinds of information you share about lens choices, tripods, filters, shutter speeds/apertures, what to do/what not to do, etc. What I enjoy most is the segments where you approach an area and talk to us about what you see and how you will address it as you factor in light, weather, wind, or too-busy or chaotic settings. (I truly envy those foggy days and gnarly, mossy trees you feature periodically. Those are rare in the U.S. Rockies.) I think most of us experienced landscape shooters benefit from hearing how someone else solves the challenges or chooses the compositions. Last, as my back and leg issues complicate my plans for long hikes and rugged, steep terrain, I've been thinking more about drone photography. I always note the drone work you intersperse with your walking and site overviews. I won't ask you to mention specific gear (unless you're free to) but what basic parameters (sensor type, size, maker, controls, range, etc.) would you suggest to someone who wants to make very good still photos and print, up to 20"x30" size? Last, I see that you frequently fly over deep ravines, off a coast line, or over rivers. Do you control them only within line of sight or can they be managed over a ridge or around an outcropping? Have you ever lost a drone and been unable to rescue/retrieve it? Thanks.

As a new drone pilot/photographer I appreciate your insights on the technical side of the photos. I look forward to getting a better handle on the camera settings for my Mavic Pro Platinum. It took sharp pictures right out of the box and naturally I went to KZbin to get suggested settings and now get real soft out of focus photos. I need to get back to a factory setting and just play with composition and using the natural light for enhancements. I look forward to learning from what you have to share.

I couldn't agree more about the straight down perspective with drone photography. Just about every other video I've seen on the subject highly recommends it, but to me it's a really niche technique that should be used extremely sparingly, particularly if your goal is good landscape photography. I see more and more photographers using drones which i think are great and these videos inspire people to get a drone but unless i have missed things in the past hardly any vlogers that use drones goes into the legal side of things and the obvious do's and don'ts of using these incredible devices. Please don't take this post as a rant but i have looked into getting a drone and decided against it.

@paulbergman82286 жыл бұрын
Chris DeAntonio You May have the beginning of a-fib, where your heart takes an erratic best profile, up and down in BPM. Mine started after a surgery on my neck and got worst after chemo therapy. Initially, it was only the right side of my heart, and triggered by a bit of stress or exciting incidents, then over time to both sides of my heart, with up to 200 BPM. It was definitely a ‘felt’ state. The problem was my heart was emptying with each beat 20% less, so there was 20% less oxygen available, and exhaustion was a constant issue. I would have rest times of 6-7 hours without any, then 7-9 hours with a-fib. The rest of my heart was in excellent condition. The less volume of each beat means that some blood can stagnate and then clot in your heart, creating the possibility of a stroke or pulmonary embolism (small ones are very painful, large ones are deadly). Get a cardiologist to put a small monitor on for 24 hours and go fly and do other things to see if you have a problem. My heart just got ‘fixed’ through ablation at a top of the line hospital in Seattle - Virginia Mason. I was very active, even so, but with a lot less endurance, but am now back to building that back up. I still ski, fly airplanes, sail and hike, and am looking forward to using my Mavic 2 (1st drone) for photography and trying some cinematography. I am a doctor, so was very aware of the issues, and what the consequences were. You can get a pulse oximeter ($39.00) from SPORTY’s PILOT SHOP and monitor your heart rate and oxygen level.

Great video and some good tips which I have been doing those for a while. The great thing about the Mavic is you can put the camera in portrait mode which makes for great pano's. I did a 12 shot pano on the isle of Harris stitched and cropped it to 3x1 and printed on A2 I have it framed on the wall the detail is amazing nobody who looks at it would say drone shot except for the view point which gives it away.

I quite enjoy your videos Nigel, thanks for doing them. You and Paul G J have inspired me to try my hand at it. However, in my case a drone is not going to be one of the tools in my kit. That being said, I would love to have one and do enjoy seeing what you are able to create with yours. Until next time, cheers!

Interesting and helpful video Nigel. I just pre-ordered my first drone, after borrowing one for a little while. I certainly intend to use it for my Landscapes. I have to say, I complete agree with your point about the best drone images tend to be the ones you don't immediately think are taken with a drone. Thats certainly an approach I'll be taking when it finally arrives!
