Hello Daniel, My name is Mike Thornton. I am the Emergency Management Director for Tillman County where this footage was taken. Soon after this incident, you made a report to Spotter Network about damage which then popped up in NWSChat. I was the one who called you soon after to get more information on what had happened and if you had seen other significant damage as I was performing severe weather operations in the county that night. The next day I performed 100 miles of damage surveying all across Tillman County. I am glad to see that you turned around when you did as the tornado caused EF-1 damage not far from where the trailer that hit your vehicle was found. Not even 3 miles away I also had Hollister, Frederick, Davidson, and Grandfield Fire Departments fighting a grass fire. They came within a mile of being struck by the tornado. (Absolutely no shelter out there) In addition to this, the town of Frederick was without power for 15 hours as a result of significant wind damage. May 31st was an absolutely wild night for Tillman County. One I will never forget!

Thank you for the detailed report. I was very worried about those fire-fighters. It was a close call for them and I did what I could to verify this night tornado. I never saw it, but certainly felt the outer perimeters of it. I knew when to stop, just wasn't expect the "debris" or in this case a trailer to come flying into me.
@DanielShawAU Жыл бұрын
Now that we know there was confirmation, it appears that I was just on the southern edge of the tornado. RFD winds were to the south. Radar however had the tornado to my NNE. So radar matching / timing to GRL3 did not match. Careful and slow approach was needed. (Debris was my primary concern) But it was open farmland with power lines to the right. You never really know what surprises can "appear" in these situations.
@SconnieKayaker Жыл бұрын
@@DanielShawAU well, I had a good feeling that something was on the ground after I saw the couplet on GRLevel3. We also had confirmation of a wall cloud from a spotter in Davidson. With that being said, you reporting that damage to spotter network definitely got my attention because after I hung up the phone with you and the severe weather passed I was directing the sheriff and other deputies to that area to further investigate potential damages. So I really appreciate that report. The good news is the damage pretty much stayed to just power poles. We did have one mobile home destroyed, however, it was a vacant home to my understanding. All the firefighters were safe. They were unable to receive communication from me about the incoming storm due to a lightning strike to our radio communications. I did not find this out until the next morning. I don't think my heart has ever raced as much as it did that night given how close we were to a serious incident. But, we live and learn! From one chaser to another, stay safe out there this year and if you're ever in Tillman County again before severe weather starts, feel free to visit me at my office at the law enforcement center in Frederick.

Did the side airbags deploy? Unlike your hail screen there is no side protection screen yet invented for runaway trailers.
