The only soldier who officially served in both US and Soviet Armies in WW2 (he escaped from a pow camp, found a Soviet unit and demanded to get back to fighting without having to wait to be sent back to the US army) ended part of an armoured unit with a female commander and mixed crews.)

Sabaton briefly touched on the 586th Fighter Regiment also. Their most famous pilot was Lydia Vladimirovna Litvyak, also known as Lilya, "The White Rose (actually a lily) of Stalingrad" - painted on her plane. She decorated her cockpit with flowers! Historians estimate that her total victories range from thirteen to fourteen solo victories and four to five shared kills in her 66 combat sorties - including a German ace who did not believe he was shot down by a short, blonde, pretty woman - until she told him how the dogfight went from the very start to when she shot him down! She was shot down and probably killed in a 4 v 1 fight where she damaged at least two seriously... Some say she escaped to Switzerland since she would be shot for having been captured if she went back to Russia. She did not receive the Hero of Russia award until after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The female aviation regiments were created through the efforts of Major Marina Raskova. She used her fame in Russia and personal contacts with Stalin to persuade him to create the regiments even though women were officially barred from combat at that time. The three regiments were the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment, and the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. Each regiment was supposed to be all female, but due to personnel shortages the 586th and 587th were soon mixed gender. Raskova was killed in January 1943 while flying with the 587th on a mission near Stalingrad. She was given the first state funeral of the war and her ashes are entombed in the Kremlin Wall.

The women's regiments were created in large part because of constant pressure from women aviators (including one whose name escapes me, but was famous in the Soviet Union and was close to Stalin, and on more than one occasion she personally wrote him to pressure him into letting women fight), and he eventually caved in. Probably my favorite research project at university was partly on the Night Witches, but also on the various women combatants of the Soviet Union in WWII. Absolutely a blast.

This song is very fast and the story interesting. One of my fav. Thanks for your great reaction! It's hard to recommend the best song because Sabaton's got a lot of them :-) Fields of Verdun is about 1st ww. I also like Screeming Eagles. Both official music video.

I love your reactions to Sabaton and that you learn about the songs as well beforehand. History told in the right way is an amazing thing! You must also check out thees songs: 1916. Fields of Verdun. Carolus Rex. En livstid i krig. Sabaton is a Swedish metal band. Therefor the singer has his rolling R:s. And the song: En livstid i krig is a song they sing in swedish, meaning : a lifetime of war. And it's a song you must see them preform from the consert in Ghothenburg, Sweden.

Interesting fact, the 588th was actually reorganized in January of 1943 and granted Guards status as the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment with 23 of their members receiving the Hero of the Soviet Union medal, two eventually receiving the Hero of the Russian Federation medal and Khiuaz Dospanova who was Kazakh receiving the Hero of Kazakhstan medal

In WW2 several countries in Europe had women pilots during the war on both sides of the conflict. See on wikipedia the Romanian "White Squadron" for example, i have read that also Finland and Poland had women pilots and snipers and i am sure other countries also did. I guess in Russia the war got extremely intense so this would be the case to a greater extent due to the extreme numbers of the soldiers involved.

A Messerschmitt 109 has a stall speed of 110 mph and a Po-2, 40 mph. That's why it's difficult for a German fighter to follow these biplanes. In the Soviet army, women were everywhere, tanks, fighters, bombers, infantry. I'm impressed by their courage.

A bit of explanation as to why she went to find the girls that were shot down, it wasn’t to honour them per say, it was to ensure they got seen as the hero’s they were, Russia the fascist regime it was back then considered all missing in action as automatically captured, they considered anyone who fell into enemy hands as traitors, so in order to ensure they got remembered as hero’s officially she needed to find where they crashed and wether they died in the crash or not, Russia didn’t treat its civilians and soldiers very well much worse than Germany and killed more of its own people than Germany did during its purges compared to Germanys purging of opposition

honestly i think the music vidoes that does not have a animated story in it already, it's fine to look up the sabaton history video of it first. As a matter of fact i think many of Sabatons songs become much better once you know the history behind it first. i think what bothered people is that they did not get to see your initial reaction of you finding out that charlie brown and franz stigler meeting after the war and your reaction to franz's daughter contacting sabaton. Also personally i would watch you reacting to the sabaton history videos aswell

4:15 The Soviets had women join the army because they where loosing so many men. The Soviet Union lost about 11 million soldiers in WW2 and at least as many civilians. All in all estimates are that the Soviet Union lost between 20-25 million peoplein WW2. The Soviets lost about 5 soldiers for every soldier the Germans lost. The Western Allies - the Brits and US americans in particular - always tell stories about how they "won the war" and yes, they had a part to play (especially in killing German civilians). But the real war was fought at the Eastern Front.

4:05 Soviets were actually rather progressive in this regard. There were women Pilots and soldiers even before WW2. To them the only important thing was that you can do the job.

She found the sites for all the women lost because the Soviets would classify anyone that didn't return as a deserter. By recording all their resting places those women's posthumous records show them to be hero's not traitors.

sadly only 8 of this squad survived the war. those that did, all were given the highest medal and honor : The Hero of the Soviet Union, along with the Order of Lenin. it's a very bland looking medal, but thats the same for the Canadian "Victoria Cross". both have a reason for that, but i can't remember what it is. i think the VC was like that so that it didn't impose a feeling of one soldier being better than the other when both were risking their lives for the good of their country; don't quote me though, it's been a long time since i researched it.
